The Temporal Traverse

Playable demo in my lockbox. Password: 1337

This is a unique puzzle level where the player has the ability to manipulate time by pausing, rewinding and fast forwarding. There is a little more to it than that though. Every action that you rewind will be repeated by a mirage of yourself. You must use your time distorted mirage friend and your wits to complete puzzles and move further toward what is your inevitable future.

That's all I'll say about the level in this post, I'd like very much for people to play the demo and leave some feedback about their experience. Please make sure your read the introduction tutorial at the start of the level carefully otherwise you will not understand how to play. The demo at the moment is basically an introduction puzzle followed by one other puzzle.

I would like to know in-particular how difficult people found it to understand how to play and how enjoyable/challenging they found the puzzles.

Played it earlier. It's an amazing concept and the game mechanics work really well. I'm still
scratching my head trying to figure out how you pulled it off.

The temporal effects are pretty cool looking. It's definitely going to be one of the more innovative puzzle levels.

Keep it up and please let us know when you have it published.

I've been working pretty hard on this level since I first posted about it, made a lot of new puzzles which incorporate timers, the logic behind which is pretty interesting so I might make a tutorial about it later since others may find it useful for other applications.

I'd like to talk a little more about the level so people have a better idea of how to play. Basically you can manipulate time - when you are holding L1 you gain complete control over the flow of time via the right joy-stick, this means if you push the joy-stick to the left time will begin to rewind, if you push it right, time will move forward and if you don't touch it at all then time will stand still. When you release L1 any actions that you rewound will be repeated by a mirage of yourself. so if you jumped off a cliff, then rewound time until the moment before you jumped you will see a mirage of yourself jump off the cliff just as you once did.

As well as updating the puzzles I have added some graphic displays to indicate to the player whether time is moving forward, backward, etc. when they are manipulating time, hopefully this will help them better understand what is happening.

Lastly, here are a few pics.

]Another substantial update to this level today. I created an all new mechanic for the level, following my previous update's trend with timers, this time I created what is essentially a count-up timer that counts up when time is in reverse (this is very different to a count down timer). I specify these temporally reversed timers using green/purple wires rather than blue/orange wires in my level as some of the pictures depict.

This new gameplay mechanic also brought me to stumble across a rather obscure flaw in my rewind logic which I found a solution to. I'll make a post about this solution in the tutorial section because it's something that I feel many people, even myself before today, don't know about logic but I won't get into that here.

I am very excited to continue building this level with more intricate puzzles. I am particularly looking forward to using these 'reverse timers' to force the player to use their velocity at specific times. In case you don't understand what I mean, in this level when you freeze time your velocity at that time and every other moment in time that you can rewind/fast forward to is saved such that when you un-freeze time your velocity is restored rather than just falling to the ground. I have a few puzzles in mind where I can take advantage of this mechanic with the reverse timer.

Also, more pics. I have been diligently decorating. =)

Before getting into any news, I'd just like to mention that I have changed the level title to "The Temporal Traverse".

So I've had some spare time here and there lately which I have invested in to this project. Mainly polishing the level up, adding lighting, sound effects, a few more puzzles and cleaning up a few of the gameplay mechanics and dialogue bubbles a bit. Everything in this level is running very smoothly at the moment. I am very eager to hear what people have to say about the gameplay, visuals and overall enjoyment they experienced throughout the level.

So far only 10 people have actually played the level, and I am very pleased with what I have heard from their reviews. However, I would always like more feedback such that I can improve upon my level further if needed. I still have quite a lot of thermo left to continue creating more puzzles so I will not say that this project is finished just yet but it's certainly approaching the home stretch. I would like to continue adding more puzzles to increase the longevity of the experience.

Thanks to all those who have taken the time to play and leave feedback about their experience. If you plan to play this level, a small word of caution - It is quite difficult to grasp the concept at first and from what I have been told the puzzles can be quite hard. Its is also STRICTLY a 1-Player level, having multiple players in the level will create a very laggy, unenjoyable experience.

I played your level, and beat it. It was the hardest puzzle level I've ever beaten something.
But one thing. The reverse timers confused me a little. It took a while for me to understand them and I don't quite understand them now. I think you should explain them in the tutorial. Actually you should do a lot more explaining in the tutorial. The mirage thing I think you devoted one magic mouth to, and I think you should have explained it more.

I agree, there is a lot of room for further explanation in the tutorial. I'm trying to find a balance between spewing text toward the player and letting them figure things out for themselves, it's difficult to tell from my perspective how easy it will be for other people to understand the gameplay mechanics. My own view is inherently biased since I am the one who made the gameplay mechanics, I know how they work inside out, I'm doomed to see things as being simple compared to someone who's never seen this kind of level before.

I'll put more effort into a tutorial section at the beginning of the level. =)

P.S. Glad you seemed to enjoy the level, thanks a lot for testing it out and giving feedback; really appreciate it.
