Mr Hippity and his Halloween 'Punkins'

Save Mr Hippitys magic 'Punkins' from the Jabbering Jester who wants to kill them all so that his own evil Pumpkins will rule Halloween! This is part one of the story.

Here are some updated photos of the level

I completely changed the gameplay of this level as people were having a lot of difficulty catching the falling punkins (I think this comes more from not watching the intro, where you got told what you got to do) So now it's a platformer with some puzzles to solve, that free the punkins and ends up at the Jesters house which will now be the 2nd part of the story.
The intro is the same just changed words to suit

Hey you! I am currently in the middle of playing your game and I was filled with a desire over to my laptop and fill you in on what I am thinking. First, I must say that I really like this concept. In fact, I love this little game so far... Now, I say so far because I haven't been able to beat them all yet *chuckles* I really like the challenge of some of these areas (challenge is good in video games) it makes me burn to conquer what is before me. ^_-

So, that in mind, I have to say that there is a mechanic in this game that I think you would benefit greatly from: its a little system I thought up while playing. You see, this game is challenging at times and the part that really breaks up the intense puzzle solving action is the fact that I must start all the way back over when I fail one test. It makes this hard to sit and just try and try to pass these tough little challenges, which is something I WANT to do, but I have already had to stop the first time I ever played because I dreaded the prospect of starting from level one every single time. So I came back later to get a better take on this (other LBPers probably would not have done the same.) You really need to keep that in mind when making levels. Make them very accessible, not easy, but easy to work with. They need to invite the player to keep going, and (as I have had to come to learn) game over screens in LBP are a one way street to many players. They move on. Never looking back.

Okay, seriously though, this game is good. It has a cute little intro that you may or may not choose to watch (a plus for the sake of ease of access), great music (I seriously had a geekasm when I heard the KH song. Did you make those?), straight forward and fun gameplay, (as always) beautiful scenery, and challenging enough to make me hunger to play it.

Please keep making things like this as I love to play them ^_-

p.s. I forgot to actually tell you may little idea, *chuckles* Ok. I think you should make each individual levels replayable with a score penalty for each failure. That way people can keep retrying the part they are on until they pass and they are much less likely to give up. They will then notice a reward for being able to do them all on the first in the form of a high score, thus tempting them even further to play this game over and over. ^_- I hope that helps.
(I Know that this may be difficult to accomplish, in practice, so if you need help we may be able to figure it out together. ^_-)

Hi kai, Thank you so much for your perseverance, I saw how many tries you gave it before finally getting to the end of part 1, it's much appreciated and yes I will have to think on about making a stage re-playable as you are the only one to have been able to do this so far lol, it just felt too easy to me and I'm probably the clumsiest sackgirl around ( I can die in Da-Vincis Hideout). Without giving a spoiler away I'm guessing you had trouble on stage 4 where there are the 3 slopes and a pumpkin? but I guess it just felt easy to me as I knew what to do, I think it's pretty hard to die in the 1st 3 stages so maybe adding a checkpoint to that 4th level would help? The thermo is fit to bursting in there so I hope it won't have a hissy fit if I try to add one

I didn't make the music it's all from the musically talented community out there and yes the Kingdom Hearts music gets to me too (I wish they would bring it to the PS3, I so loved that game). So thank you for your kind words and advice and I'll get on with some improving.
P.S I replayed your Zelda the other day and got to the end, really looking forward to part 2

Edit: From looking into your suggestion more, I realized I can't add a checkpoint, as once that switch is pulled, it' stays pulled and sets off the rest of the logic so restarting from that point won't help. so Idk what to do, any suggestions that don't entail me ripping each stage to pieces?

I just finished playing it and completely concur with VampyreKai. I wanted to finish but after restarting, it just wasn't in me. I thoroughly loved the design and concept though. I'm no logic guru so I can't help.2012-10-17 18:32:00

Thank you Birogue What part did you find difficult?

what happened with me was I was in the room where you run to the right and grab the pumpkin that opens the hatch. I dropped down and proceeded to look for the "X" and switch, but oh woe is me, the switch is back up there where I started and I can't get back up there. So I "popped" myself, thinking that I'd just restart the room, nope, game ender. I didn't even know that switch was there until it was too late, maybe a subtle light on it would help. A couple of things that I'd change. If you drop or fail to catch the pumpkin, instead of the level ending like that, the player should appear at the scoreboard to receive whatever score he has accumulated at that point. So instead of that logic being connected to the game-ender, can't you just connect it to the scoreboard?

Thank you for your reply Biorogue, I fixed it so that if the Punkin gets dropped then at least you get to the scoreboard with the score that had been accumulated beforehand and it's a little easier to see the switch

After reading all this I'll give it another go too! I liked the look of everything. I did have trouble seeing some of the levers. The pumpkins with the cartoon eyes are cute.2012-10-21 02:16:00

Ok, I've now made it so that even if you drop the Punkin at any stage, you can still continue on through the level (albeit with a bad conscience if you dropped the punkins ) I'm changing the whole way part 2 of the story works, so that will be out soonish
I hope now that anyone who wants to retry will make it to the scoreboard.

Completely changed the gameplay as most were finding it too hard and used my ideas from what would have been the 2nd level and made it the 1st. Published the original as a mini game 2012-11-02 12:28:00
