Ability To Use Mouse and Keyboard

Archive: 10 posts

Hi, I've been playing LBP in story mode and playing other peoples levels since I got the game at Christmas, but I feel its about time I started to do my own levels.

I have done all the tutorials and have started to make my own level but I find it such a farce trying to do it all with a hand held controller. I belive it would be much easier if there was a way to use a mouse and keyboard.

Ideally, a PC version of the Level Creator would be made for the more serious level gods, where you would simply send the finalised level via wifi or usb flash drive to the ps3.

I agree. PC is the best system (atleast for FPS and physic based creators [like lbp]) X_X.

But then again the challenge of making a level only makes the end product more amazing.

If we took a way the controller, creating would actually be quite boring.

As you can probably tell, I disagree, even though I don't have much of a reason.

If we used a mouse, then it would be harder to actually place things in perfect place without shaking. With a controller, however, I find it easier. I'm pretty sure that it might be how used to the controller you are.
If you are experienced on the Computer, then you'll find it easier on a Computer. If you are experienced on the PS3 controller, then you'll find it easier on a PS3 Controller.

If you are of both or neither, then I suppose it's just whatever you prefer

I don't like this idea.

It's kinda like cheating.

You can use the keyboard already in LBP, although it does not do any short cuts and is only used for typing out information like object names and chatting to other players.

As for a mouse being more accurate, which was not directly said but implied by the first post, I disagree. The game uses an analog stick, which is just as accurate in my opinion as a mouse can be. Certainly, you can't select the whole screen with one broad movement, but I can see that as being the only advantage that a mouse can bring to the table.

With grid mode and the analog sensitivity, I find the controller to be just as accurate if not more so than a mouse for fine detail work. You also have front view as well to be highly detailed, and can zoom in to about 2 big wide or zoom out to I think about 40 big grid wide. That's a lot of scope to put the level of accuracy (or broad movements in) with the current control scheme.

I guess you are right about which you are used to lol
I hardly play games on my ps3, (except LBP) so I dont really have much experence with the analogue controller. (I might be better if I could use my 360 controller lol)

I guess its the whole way that the creator is designed just seems "alien" to me...
I think it would be better if instead of using sack person as a cursor, it would be better to use an arrow or 3d + shape...

I know at the end of the day its a game created for anyone to be able to pick it up and once they have been given the basics they can let there imagination run wild, but I still think it should have an "advanced mode" of some sort, where all of the cuteness has been taken out and your left with a powerful level editor...

Hopefully like I said earlier, someone will release a PC version of the editor which can create saves which would some how merge with your current game data on the PS3.

I don't like this idea.

It's kinda like cheating.

The thing is, it would allow better user levels to be made, which I'm sure you would be happy to play.

I don't think creating should be made hard...

I don't understand why so many suggestions seem to get such a negative reception around here? Especially when the main arguments against them are "I wouldn't use it so it shouldn't be added". I mean, I could understand if it was something game breaking, but you barely ever see anyone respond with "I like this idea, it'd be awesome for doing [x]".

Anyway, I'm for the idea. I'm not sure if I'd use it too much myself if it was implemented, but I'd give it a shot. Anything that has a prospect for better levels all round is good in my book.

Eagle-Eye PS3 Controller Converter Debuts At CES 2010 (http://cinemablend.com/games/Eagle-Eye-PS3-Controller-Converter-Debuts-At-CES-2010-22064.html)

"device will allow gamers to equip any USB keyboard and mouse up as a replacement for their PS3 controller."

• Customized Key Mapping Feature Transfers Command Data to Keyboard
and Mouse
• Same Data Transfer Rate as Original PS3 Controller for Greater Dexterity
• Optional Turbo Mode for R1, R2, L1, L2 and the 4 Primary Action Buttons
• Supports 2 USB Ports for Standard HID Keyboard and Mouse
• Provides Turbo Function for Standard PS3 Controller when Not Using Keyboard/Mouse

I' would be more comfortable creating with a mouse. I think I'll give this gadget a try when it hits the shelf.

Certainly, you can't select the whole screen with one broad movement, but I can see that as being the only advantage that a mouse can bring to the table.

Yes you can move an analogue stick to just as precise a position as you can with a mouse, but they have a dead zone in the center and greatly limited max speed. Analogue stick devices also have a major issue of granularity vs speed and you'll never get around that, so using a mouse will always allow for faster, more accurate placement of your cursor. Also support for decent mice would hopefully allow for mapping of all buttons giving you nearly all the functionality of a gamepad in one hand, leaving the other hand to activate shortcuts etc. So that would allow direct access to more functionality in less time, assuming the user is skilled with a keyboard and mouse.

I've clocked hundreds upon hundreds of hours in create mode and I've been using the playstation analogue sticks since they first appeared, but moving stuff around in LBP is still as tedious as hell because deep down I know there are better interfaces out there and I could be working much faster with them. It's the same issues as FPSs have on consoles, the interface is sluggish and inferior.

Having a mouse interface would also open up the door towards graphics pads, which personally I've never got on with, but I'm sure a lot of our graphics-oriented creators might find useful.

Using a mouse instead of an analog stick would be harder.
think about it, is drawing on photoshop easy with a mouse? Most of you would say no. Same goes for creating in lbp.
i just don't know how i could explain better...
