For those of you that have played my previous levels...

Both of them are pretty long. I heard this one guy took one hour to beat TF... I was like...whoa. Anyway, do you guys think they might be too long? Are they just about right, or should they be shorter? Reason I'm asking this is because I know some people don't make it to the end, simply because they find it too long. I could use this feedback for the level I'm currently working on. I'm leaning towards shorter this time around, but I'd still like to know what you guys think. :] | 2009-01-13 07:07:00 Author: aer0blue Posts: 1603 |
Well, I really liked TF, it was long I must admit, but never boring. As long as you have gameplay that is refreshing and innovative, the level should never get someone bored, UNLESS it's a bit too frustrating to pass a certain spot. You have to take all of this into account. Btw, if you need anyone to test your level for you, I'm here... Don't hesitate to ask, I promise to give you constructive feedback/criticism. | 2009-01-13 07:31:00 Author: Whalio Cappuccino Posts: 5250 |

Yeah, I stopped the testing process after my level data got corrupt. I'll reopen or remake the thread again later on when I have more stuff done. | 2009-01-13 07:44:00 Author: aer0blue Posts: 1603 |
Yeah, I've completely stopped creating in LBP due to my level going corrupt in the weirdest way. So I'm just waiting outisde the door, waiting for Best Buy to open their doors, so I can go inside. Wait what?! | 2009-01-13 07:47:00 Author: Whalio Cappuccino Posts: 5250 |
Personally, I think your levels are of perfect length and I would say keep going how you are. I really enjoy the meatier levels. | 2009-01-13 08:43:00 Author: UmJammerSully Posts: 1097 |
Yeah, I agree with Chaz. That guy must of really sucked at platforming games, because one hour!? I mean, Tekno Fortress is longer than some levels but honestly... Anyway, yeah... I like the length of your levels and I say you keep them how they are | 2009-01-13 09:49:00 Author: Unknown User |
Isn't the fact that he kept playing for an hour a good thing? But if you are worried about it, I would take some of the people's advice on here and put more effort into the visuals. That would take up more thermometer space and thus a shorter level. | 2009-01-13 15:13:00 Author: Voltiare Posts: 646 |
I'm into longer levels, but I can see why some people aren't too keen. I think one compromise would be an optional exit and scoreboard every so often for people who don't really want to go any further at the time, but still want the level to count as played, or for their score so far to be submitted for whatever reason. (It'd probably be more useful if teleports or something were added as an update, so the player could zap to where they left off if they quit). It's just a lot of hassle for very little point though in the end. But yeah, I think if a level can keep itself interesting, I've no problem if it takes a while to beat. | 2009-01-13 15:28:00 Author: Ace Posts: 118 |
I like long levels, They need more effort to make, amd need more Ideas than smaller levels. So if you can make a decent long level, You'll probably get my heart. | 2009-01-14 16:19:00 Author: DRT99 Posts: 431 |

Alright, well, I just speed-ran mine (I know the puzzle solutions and how to ace the first boss) and it took me four minutes to get to where I am at, which I consider to be decent. It's still missing the introduction and about 30%-40% of gameplay areas, so I imagine it will take the average player around 10 minutes to complete. Shorter than my previous levels, but I think that's a good thing. I can keep the quality up this way. Not to mention the level will have a little..."extra". Oh-hoohoo. | 2009-01-15 02:25:00 Author: aer0blue Posts: 1603 |

I haven't played TF, but I did play RT. I thought it was pretty good, although it was definitely on the long side. Since the thermometer inevitably forces you to choose between complexity (detail) and length (size), my honest thought was I would have rather seen the level play shorter but more effort put into decorating. At times, it even felt a somewhat claustrophobic. Another thing to consider are your signature "sections" of a level. I'm talking the rooms, or traps, or puzzles, that really stand out as the memorable parts of a level. Having a really long level dilutes the effect of these, since there are either too many to remember, or they end up spaced too far apart by "filler" gameplay. There were a *lot* of fun parts to RT, don't get me wrong, but admittedly there were a few puzzles and areas that just felt plain generic and I could have done without. Nevertheless, I think your work stands out in the community, but remember even the best creator can always learn something new! | 2009-01-15 17:10:00 Author: Thegide Posts: 1465 |
