Why dont my levels get plays...?

Archive: 17 posts

How do I get people to play my levels...? I try to plug them ask for reviews/ feedback ( which is what I am looking for to improve them) and I get nothing... I've had LBP and LBP2 when it was released and play fairly often, I comment and leave nice reviews for others but it gets nowhere. How come all these spammers/ copiers get tons of plays, while people like myself try to make a full level from scratch and get none, what am I doing wrong??? Any help with ideas or suggestions? Having looked around at your LBPC activity and LBP.me activity, for the most part, you seem to be doing a decent job, but there are still a few things you could do with getting better at.
For the sake of not feeling like I'm just retyping stuff I've said before, I'd like to quote one of my much older posts -

First of all, let's talk about your in-game presentation.
You'll want to try gearing yourself up for a weekend publish. If all goes well, you might even make it onto the Cool Pages if you can get enough attention within the first few hours. (But that's really a best-case scenario.)
Publishing at the weekend ensures a larger audience for you. Naturally, some people are busier during the week.

I trust you'll already know that a good level badge, title, description and some photo's help out a lot in attracting people in-game.
Make a custom badge with an in-game photo, Eye-toy photo, or Move Painting. It doesn't nessecarily need to have the level name written in it, but it does need to be somehow relevant, and something that will attract people. Generic Sackperson-close ups are not the way to go. Ever.
Your badge should in some way represent the level, whether you have the level name written in the badge or not is optional, but it must be something well thought out and people need to be able to understand what it is they see in the badge.
A good title should be interesting. Try to avoid cliched names like 'LittleBigX' and whatnot.
Always write up a description, and be sure to upload some photo's so people can either
A) Have a look at your level before they start loading it.
or B) They have a neat preview of what they're already loading.
Again, keep your photo's relevant and interesting. Try to show off some of the best bits of your level, without ruining any surprises.
(You've got this bit down, Knukeshift. This is just included for others benefit.)

As for LBPC threads, I always like to put on a good show. My mentality of LBPC showcases is thus - If you don't care enough about your level to spend more than 2 or 3 minutes creating a worthwhile thread, why on Craftworld should I care enough to play it? I don't mean to plug, but check out the links below my post, I like to think I have some pretty attractive threads. Maybe a little over-the-top, but secretly, I don't care if people read it or not, the point is, people see the mass amounts of text and are convinced I spent a good while working on not only the thread, but also the level.
Talk about your level, what did you want to achieve? Did you achieve it? What are you proud of? Did you learn anything? What would you do different next time? Space out some photo's throughout your article, and if you really want to push the boat out, open up an Image Manipulation Program and create some banners and maybe even a promotion signitature.
I use Photoshop, but a while ago I used GIMP. GIMP is freeware and almost identicle to PS, if slightly more rough around the edges.

Another thing worth keeping in mind is that like everyone else, you'll need to work your way up the ranks, of sorts. As you improve as a creator, you'll build up a bigger and bigger following, so don't be disheartened if initially you feel like it's impossible to get off the ground. If you've really got the talent and the dedication, you'll eventually get the recognition you deserve.

You're certainly polite and you've got a nice attitude towards the community, from what I saw, so just persevere, keep doing what you're doing, and things'll get better with time.

Thank you, I do spend quite a bit of time with development creating and replaying to ensure a nice experience. I do need to make banners for my signature ect... when I try to add the image to a link it still just comes up an attachment or link I would like actual photos n such so I will play with PS and get some together, thanks for the help with level info like " what I was trying to achieve?" etc, I am not very good at writing about my level, so this is I think a good task for me to shoot for. I know I'm a bit of a noob here but everyone starts there at sometime, and I dont mind asking questions and such it will only help me with my progress becoming a better level creator. Thanks for your reply!2012-10-02 21:29:00

Being "famous" really starts off with luck. Luck luck luck. Just get that one level to the top and your set from there. And if you do get there, KEEP CREATING, your future fans want to see activity, or else you'll bore them2012-10-02 22:47:00

Rubbish.
Nobody is sitting, looking at their Hearted List going 'Oi! Slacker!? You haven't made anything in a while! Amuse me!'
If you've got nothing to create, then don't try to create anything. Spending time assing about in Create Mode when there's really no drive to create something will just result in boring yourself.

It's really not about being "famous" I just want to make good levels and the rest will come in play, I am trying to become a better level creator and feedback and comments/replies help me achieve that, if I get no plays I have nothing to go off of... thus just trying to get plays to push myself to be better. Oh, Ostler5000 your right! And just assing round in create mode with no drive is a bit of a waste, I like to go in with a plan.2012-10-03 17:57:00

I've said this a couple of times, but personally I find it best to just ignore plays. If you've enjoyed creating the level and you're happy with the result, great. Why bother with what other people think?2012-10-03 18:48:00

Probably the main reason why you're not getting plays on "COOL SLOT MACHINES (1 player)" is meow, the cat. Generic stickers, that have nothing to do with the title is a no-no. Just use a screenshot of the level as the cover, quick and easy. Also remove the 'COOL', "SLOT MACHINES (1 player)" sounds more appealing.2012-10-03 18:58:00

Thanks great idea I used the cat because it was one of the stickers used on the main slot machine, I added "COOL" just for text search options but didn't really work so I do plan to change it to just SLOT MACHINES (1 PLAYER) Thank you

Not using all caps makes it seem 50% less spammy. For example, if I say that, I'd never play it because of the all caps. Unless your goal is to imtate shouting, don't use all caps.

Again another thing I guess I really wasnt thinking about when I published, I do not want to come across as a spammer for sure! I really appreciate all the advice, these are all things I need to take in account and was never really brought to my attention, this is why I am really liking this community... these are great examples of input and feedback I was needing. I will fix these issues ( and republish on the weekend for better results )

Thank you all very much! With your help I know I will publish some nice levels.

A really catchy, memorable title is important. Even more appealing is a level which feels like a complete experience. The title, badge, gameplay, and visuals should all match. So I would say "come up with a more creative title", but not if you aren't equally as imaginative in your levels' overall ideas, design, and fun. Instead of something as literal as "Slot Machine", what about "Gamblers' Volcano Paradise"? Or put it on a dairy farm and call it "Moo Moo Slots"! It's all about imagination and cohesiveness for me personally.2012-10-16 00:33:00
