Fire Down Below

Archive: 12 posts

Well, here I go again. I been testing and restesting and building and I think it's ALMOST ready for deployment. If I can get some of you more expert creators to try out my level title "Fire Down Below," please do.

Like I said, its not really complete. I have to add a better storyline to the helpers that guide little sinning sackboys through their journey to hell. Also, I am in the works of adding a few more puzzlers and what not. But right now I got a few bosses and its sll custom content so feel free to check it out and gimme a holler on here. I also got a shoutout to this site on my level!!

Thanks guys!

Considering this is incomplete it is pretty impressive. I gave it 5 stars and a heart and will post again tomorrow with more thoughts (off to bed now lol).2009-01-13 13:55:00

I liked it. I thought the atmosphere was well done, especially in the first half of the level . I enjoyed the devil dogs and other creatures as well. I did have some moments where I would try to jump on a dog or creature and get stuck in between the ruins in the background, but it wasn't too bad. Oh! I also liked one section where I died and was greeted with a new challenge back at the respond point that wasn't there before. Do you do that elsewhere in the level? I thought that was pretty ingenious and would be a nice way of keeping sections where you die interesting.

The multiple boss fights were pretty cool as well, but after the first two, the snake felt a bit lame. Also, the atmosphere felt a bit different to me here. Specifically, after the mine cart ride (which looked awesome by the way), the level seemed to be less detailed as it was in the first half.

You've got a good level here. Continue to tweak it, perhaps add some more detail at the end, reduce the chance of getting stuck in rubble during jumps, etc. Good job!

Pretty cool level so far. Very visually impressive in places, and thanks for the infinite checkpoints, some parts are quite tricky.

The only downsides are:
*Sometimes I go behind a checkpoint, and therefore don't activate it.
*I once got stuck in the scenery, shortly after the part after you get loads of points.
*The mine cart ride is quite impressive, but looks a little unfinished. It's like there's just large squares of fire in the background.
*The lighting at the snake boss is kinda buggy. At times, it flashed to daylight for a split second.
*Also, at the snake part, it's quite easy to fall between the sections of the snake.

I gave it 5 stars. I'll probably heart it as well once it's fully finished.

OK, here are some thoughts on the level:

I have to begin by saying this looks completely different from the level I tested about a week ago. You completely changed the lighting (maybe that was always your intention but was not in place when I played it) and the level looks 10X better ( I thought it looked great to begin with).

Your use of lighting in this level is simply incredible. There were a couple of sections where I literally stopped playing just to admire the beautiful lighting. Truly one of the most impressive uses of light I have ever seen in LBP.

Your devil dogs are one of the coolest enemies I have fought in LBP. They are tiny but boy are they deadly lol. You compensated for some of the easy deaths caused by these little guys by adding infinite checkpoints so I really can't complain.

Speaking of checkpoints, I love the totem poles you have bordering them. This was a very artistic touch that still perfectly fits the atmosphere of your level. Well done man, they were truly beautiful to look at.

I really liked the way you imbedded fire into your structures. I don't believe I have ever seen it done to the extent that you did it and it really reinforced the idea of being in hell. You also have some wonderful statues/structures in the background throughout the level that really add some visual punch.

I liked that at various sections you had some really great looking falling debris, it added some variety to the level.

I liked the glass slide. Nothing particularly original here but for some reason I really enjoyed this one.

You have 3 boss battles! To be fair none of them are really challenging but I don't really mind. The fact is that all three are very different from eachother and the boss' are completely original. My favorite is the second or "main" boss. That hammer of his looks rather deady and man is it big lol. I loved scaling his back and tearing off that horn, well done.

Suggestions:

- The paintinator is used on the first boss but I am not so sure the paintinator fits the theme of your level. It is much easier then the blockes you originaly had but maybe you could come up with something else? (maybe create a weapon for the player to use for example)

- During the section with the glass floor and fire ceiling. There were some stickers that I felt did nit fit the overall atmosphere you had going on. Just a personal opinion.

- The grabbable spinning wheels have been done to death. I think spinning wheels are nice but it would not hurt to somehow make them different from the generic spinning wheels we see all the time (or you could completely revamp this section and add something else).

- Color your checkpoints.

That's pretty much it. I honestly don't think the level is incomplete. Like all levels, there will always be things you can change/improve upon post-publishing but as far as I'm concerned this level is more the ready for "deployment" lol. Once again, 5 stars and hearted and I look forward to your next project.
