Your original publish date is too early.
Everyone, please read all the rules:

Publish your levels in the 10 day period between 12.00AM GMT on 22nd October and 11:59PM GMT on 31st October 2012. Please note this is a change from previous LBPC contest rules.

Q: Can I have my friends play test a locked beta level before the publishing window?
A: Yes. The beta level must remain locked, and should be deleted and replaced with your official contest entry during the publishing window. Your official entry must have a publishing date within the window.

A. as detailed on the first page, yes, you can use water.
B. you can, but if it gets frustrating to play (e.g we can't get very far (thus seeing little of the level) due to it being too difficult) it may score worse than a level that isn't designed to kill you.

Aren't most levels designed to kill you, just at your own pace?

I'm horribly failing the deadline (again). I did have a lot of fun researching marble machines, though. And against my expectations for the LBP physics engine, I found out you can do a stable marble pump (as long as you keep it fed).

Oh, and that cunning plan... not feasible.

Does this mean the judges don't always play through the full level? That seems unfair to me, because someone (not saying who ) might want to make their level quite challenging, to increase the satisfaction that comes with completion.

Unrelated question: If I want to have players 'arrive' at the level in a vehicle at the start, is it okay to have it move under its own power, since it's more of a scenic moment?

Does this mean the judges don't always play through the full level?

I put the case to you that a level physically cannot be completed by a judge, then the case that the scoreboard was placed just outwith the maximum jump range with no alternative route but an incredibly hard puzzle which could take up to an hour to complete... let's, for the sake of argument, call this level 'LBPC1: Second Hand City'... The first obstacle (let's just say an electro magnetic jumping puzzle) was so challenging that the judges were just wasting their time which could be used to judge other levels quicker and thus get a result to the public quicker, the obstacles difficulty alone had already shown poor design as it neglected the skill of the vast majority of players and thus scored so low it negated the rest of the level...

It's up to the creator to show balance in these contests, making it challenging is fine and is often welcomed, but you have to be able to balance the difficulty for all players. We will never just straight out disqualify a level for being hard, we give you a hard contest so feel free to return the favour... call it revenge if you will. In the case of survival challenges, they are designed to stop you from getting to the end by trying to kill you as quickly as possible, if we see little of the level it's entirely out of our control as we are unable to respawn.

The case study presented before you is taken from a real world example, feel free to have a go at the entry (http://lbp.me/v/5rm70x) without using any of the sticker switch shortcuts and see how you would rate the level, I can guarantee you, if you choose to play the obstacles (like the judges were forced to) you will see why sometimes judges have to make a tough judgment call.

The judging of this level changed the way I view level balance, it taught me a lesson that nobody could simply tell you.

As to your unrelated question, yes that's fine as we'll judge nothing but music and art style before the player gets to the initial power source.

Thank you, I'll have a crack at that one! I have a few obstacles in my level that I could see taking around 10 tries to pass, but I can't imagine someone spending an hour. I can complete the whole thing in under 7 minutes, but I plan to adjust some things after more beta testing with a few people.2012-10-22 19:07:00

Hmm. Considering that, I might be able to do it... In the very, very, last second :hrmf:

For anyone who's put effort into this contest but may not be able to complete your level as planned, I suggest taking the remaining time to use what you have and make it work. Even if you don't produce the level you had planned in it's entirety, you can learn a lot about yourself as a creator by working under pressure and doing so may bring out the best in your skills.
Good luck to everyone

When it says "No level links", does that include optional links to advertise separate levels of ours and the people who helped us? (I assume so, but just thought it worth clarifying.)2012-10-23 21:20:00

We won't be travelling through level links if we have a choice, if you force us through one with logic we'll frown upon it and only then may we decide to respond with negative points.

A nice way to credit people is by providing an LBP.me link in the level description. This way you can highlight the other creator's profile, not just one level.
The link is created by typing @ before the psn, and for this to work you privacy settings must allow levels to be seen online. Here's an example http://lbp.me/v/0b6hcn click on the @CreatorsToolkit link to see that profile.
A bit basic, but a refresher never hurts

Obviously I'm not allowed to play it just yet because I have to be fair to everybody, but you've certainly been successful in getting me hyped for your level, thanks for all the questions over the last few weeks, it not only helped others in the contest, but also the crew and our understanding of you guys and gals.

best of luck

Levels republished after the deadline will be disqualified. Exceptions may be made for quick fixes with respect to level titles, description, badges, or major game-breaking fixes, but only with the prior consent of the contest crew. If you need to request an edit, please post in this thread and send me a PM.

The publishing window has ended, thanks everyone

Can I just ask something?

I know the rules strickly say no publishes after the deadline, but, after the hurricane going through New York and New Jersey, some contestants are left without power and internet. I don't exactly know, but there may be some people who have a level ready to go for this, but can't publish because of this situation.

I think it would be nice of you guys to except entries from people affected by this storm after the deadline, because that is not quite fair. Once again, I don't know if anyone is affected, but it is possible. This is just my opinion, and I think you guys should take it seriously.

Good luck to everyone by the way!

How to enter

• Build a level before the deadline that fits the contest description and building requirements.
• Include the text “(LBPC9)” in the title of the level. Don’t forget to add things like a nice looking badge, some tags, and a concise level description.
• Publish your levels in the 10 day period between 12.00AM GMT on 22nd October and 11:59PM GMT on 31st October 2012. Please note this is a change from previous LBPC contest rules.
• Post LBP.me links to your levels in this thread, so we’re sure not to miss them!
• After the deadline, the judges will grab some motion sickness pills and select the best levels based on the scoring criteria below. The creator of the best level will be awarded a Crown and rare LBPC pin!

Searching "LBPC9" on lbp.me there are 15 levels but the only entries posted in this thread are:

ShoutVik “LBPC9 Catastrophy Error To Launch!”
Darkabbestia “(LBPC9) Diabolik machine”
Se-mi92 "(LBPC9) Like Clockwork"
Liquid_Blood_ "(LBPC9) Petal Gear"
pvzTUGA "(LBPC9) Infinite Rotation"
aratiatia "Golden Chain Reaction (LBPC9)"

Just wondering - what do the judges make of this?

Something for you to ponder while your waiting:

Dave's cunning plan #4

...in 14 easy steps

1. Observe the rule refering to using a singular magical power source (read: motor bolt, wobble bolt, piston or winch) fueling the level.
2. Use the power source to begin the level
3. Realise that the crew allowed the use of bombs
4. create combustion engine:

http://youtu.be/gx2bKGS4kmM

5. Power level
6. Get a conscience
7. realise the crew allowed all bullet projectiles to be magically emitted.
8. Fire water at wheels to create water wheels
9. Power level eco friendly style
10. you didn't read step 3
11. now check that you did
12. Stop wasting time checking steps 10, 11, 3 and 12 and return to building level.
13. ???
14. Profit

We should have the result soon, just getting it down to the final couple of levels now... hang tight.

Combustion engine..? But... what about the Little Big Ozone??! Look at all the smog it's generating!

Anyways, I remember you guys saying something about emitted objects preferably having a believable, physical cause branching from the main power source, which the engine doesn't quite seem to. At the same time, WOW it's a VERY cool vehicle idea!!!! ^_^ I had no idea that was even possible. Dave, now let's see you design a complete level with engaging gameplay based around it while following all other rules!

not too long, we're literally just finalising the top few and winner now...

I don't think it would be a problem if you re-published though and you won't be disqualified at this stage, we've checked your level and have judged it by the state it was post deadline so any changes would not be counted by us anyway.

Thanks, Dave, I had to do it!

With the "stand out from the crowd" mention in the 98th spotlight, I was getting a lot of plays for my competition entry. I knew it was breaking for some people and I had been through a few times and noticed a section breaking. This only happened occasionally though and to make the level more reliable I tweaked "indestructible" on two key items and threw around some stickers and decorations while I was in there.

The level is too complicated to easily change the mechanics - everything depends on the previous thing's physics. I didn't alter the mechanics so you could play it and not notice any difference from the post-deadline version APART FROM the level not breaking near the end at all now(hopefully!). There is no change to the gameplay or sequence of events. It would be easier to build a whole new level!

Thanks for taking the time to reply, looking forward to the results now!
