Mm Refreshes The Rating System

News from the Mm official blog. Seems the rating system has been tweaked! Good news for the good levels I imagine, bad news for Ramp!

Ratings? Rate This!

The server guys have been hard at work tweaking the ratings system and now it is time for you to tryout those changes! This means that over time we should see a bit more movement on the Community Planet front page as well-rated levels go up the list and poor-rated levels sink down.

Here?s a quick refresh on how to apply your stars:

Not Recommended - Which means something like ?OMG! This levels stinks, it's awful, it's really not very good AT ALL! Yuck!?

Needs Work - Hmm, Not bad, the Creator needs to change that bit? ?and that bit? ?and possibly that bit and then it could be OK

Worth Playing - Pretty average, not great but not awful, you know, it?ll do. Or maybe there?s something about this level that people have to see and you want other people to know that.

Very Good - Now we?re talking! This could be a level that someone has spent a lot of time on and it shows (maybe great artwork or fun gameplay, etc). You shouldn?t give 4 Stars lightly unless you really enjoyed it so really make that stern face and consider before you rate it.

Must Play! - Ok, so you?ve just played a level that has left you stunned, there?s a huge smile on your face and your hands are shaking. You?ve just played a level worth rating 5 Stars, the epitome of ratings. You need to let everyone know so rate away! (no stern face this time because you just know it's worth 5 stars).

So why should we all rate levels? Well, it's a nice way of showing your ?thanks? to the Creator. Nothing makes a Creator smile more than seeing their level rating going up and up and, hopefully, this will make them want to make more great levels for us all to enjoy.

In the future, ratings will help us all find those hidden gems and reward all the hard work from the Creators but more about that in the future.

Oh, and remember if you have something to say about the level, put in a comment . Don?t be shy, Creators love to hear from people who have played their levels.		2009-01-12 19:30:00

I'm not 100% sure, but I would assume the way the ratings are compiled might have changed. As in perhaps now the best levels will be able to get 5 stars without needing EVERYONE to vote 5 stars. You know like if out of 100 you're in the top 20 than you would get 5 stars. It's probably a bit more complexe than that, but I would assume the changes are along those lines...2009-01-12 20:16:00

Yep basically it's already been tweaked. All we have to do is rate as usual and see what happens to the levels.

Basically what has happened is any level that hasn't been published in while has been taken of the cool level pages. This will help keep only the current users levels up.2009-01-13 00:07:00

What they could really do is allow us to form groups in-game. The groups could work so that a level author can apply for a group or the group admin could invite levels into the group. One level can only belong to one single group. This would allow us to have a 'LBPC Level Showcase' group that could really boost the visibility of the showcase levels. Also, we could have a separate LBPC group for all other LBPC levels - I'm sure levels in this group would also get a lot more visibility than they would otherwise, as the overall quality of our levels is quite a bit higher than that of an average LBP level. Those kinds of groups would boost the visibility of LBPC itself, as well.

I think it'll take a little longer before any real changes are noticeable. I mean they didn't scrap all the previous ratings, so the tweaked system doesn't void the old one until it's had a chance to be significantly used. My guess is by the time changes effect the search pages, we'll have forgotten it was tweaked in the first place and be wondering how come all of a sudden there are actual cool levels on the front pages 2009-01-17 16:51:00

Well, it's not like the number of votes and number of starts rating each level received is a foreign data they cannot access.

If they were good they would have simply recalculate the stats they gathered so far by the new equation.

In short, right now this update won't change much thing and will only somewhat help futur levels. It's almost making a lovely blog post update that really sounds serious and dedicated...		2009-01-17 19:40:00
