Mr. Ratzinger's Hasty House

Archive: 14 posts

Hello, my fellow sackpeople!
Some of you might still know me, Mamett-Box, from the early days of LittleBigPlanet 1 when the game was young and I was promising.
Since the second level of an forgotten series I've never published a proper level again due to irrealistically huge projects and great, diabolic lazyness.
Now people comment on my LBP2 profile:

A great creator now forgotten, tragic.

[...] You are an elder forgotten, Mamett. :'(

Oh dear...

Well, behold, Sackpeople, because he is BACK!

Mamett-Box proudly presents Mr: Ratzinger's Hasty House (http://lbp.me/v/fqjher)!
Here's the plot:
A house with feet isn't a normal thing and as soon as it decides to go for a walk the owner is having a really bad time.
So one day, Mr. Ratzinger is begging you to help him with a rather predictable problem: His huse is wandering around and needs to be caught. For some reason, Ratzinger can't manage to do so himself - this is where you jump in!
Climb in the mysterious insides of the wandering house, meet some of the weird tenants and push the button that will end the chaos!
Easy, no?

Formal stuff:
- Medium difficulty
- Made for 1 or 2 players. NOTE: The level itself is made for up to two players. Unfortunately the level links are going crazy sometimes, which means you have to re-invite your pal sometimes. Playing with two controllers on one system however shouldn't be a problem.

- LPB.me: http://lbp.me/v/fqjher
- Screenshots!

41953
41954

Note: These Screenshots show much less than the actual level contains; of course there's much more stuff to explore in the strange walking house.

Give it a go, it's worth it!

Yes. Yes! YES!

You're definitely my favourite creator from LBP1. All of your levels just oozed charm out of every creative orifice. I'll check this out immediately.

Also, did you make your LBP1 levels LBP1 only?

Great! Truth be told, I don't remember anyone from the early LBP days even though I was there. Anyway, this does certainly looks very, very promising. Consider it queued! Hopefully I'll be back with a new review of mine. 2012-09-25 00:52:00

Thanks so far!
There's a new LBP.me link (http://lbp.me/v/fqjher) now as i reuploadet it to access the cool pages. :0
You might want to play it again.

@bonner123: The LoveLetterLevels (lol) are indeed LBP1 only, as esecially the lighting in the swamps was too intense for LBP2. Maybe I'll give them a makeover and republish both, but I have other things to do. I hope that my new level provides a proper alternative to the old ones!

I loved the setting of this level. Very Howl's Moving Castleish. Was it an inspiration by any chance? Overall I think the level could use some more sound and decoration in certain places. There are areas that feel very bland / quiet in comparison to others, but overall it's still great looking and unique. As always, your character design is fresh, charming and slightly disturbing. The house was quite great, but the first section when you're jumping onto the house is a bit challenging so a double life checkpoint wouldn't go amiss.

Still an excellent level and I'm glad you're back (even if only temporarily).

Lovely / nostalgia bonner stars

I wish there were more levels like yours! As Bonner123, I especially loved the steampunk-ish setting. The transitions through the corridors and the pipes were pretty clever too. The final scenery looks outstanding, I'll definitely remember your "steampunk marionette"!2012-09-25 19:55:00

Howl's Moving Castle? Inspiration...? Hehe, nooooo waaaaay!
Alright, you got me there! It's an amazing movie, for sure!

Concerning your feedback, bonner, I've placed an infinite checkpoint at the very beginning. Also, I'd love to add more decoration and shenanigans, but my thermometer is not far away from overheating. D: Which is a shame because online-multiplayer is directly affected by this issue. Actually I'm still looking for a way to reduce the heat of the level.

Another important information especially for OmegaSlayer: The main character of the level, Mr. Ratzinger, is not, definitely not the pope! I just like the name.

@rest: Thanks for the nice feedback, tell your friends about the level.

Pretty much all Ghibli movies are great inspiration. I call Castle in the Sky though. 2012-09-26 13:57:00

Have to say, it's the first I've heard of you only because I was introduced to LBP1 a little late til LBP2 came out. That being said, I had the privilege of running into your level on the cool pages( something that's been lost for a while). With utter amazement from the story line to the unique gameplay, this level was strangely appealing and slightly disturbing at the same time. A catch 22 if I say so. Very much the favor of the appealing side. I truly enjoyed every aspect of this level and hope you continue creating in LBP22012-09-29 16:41:00

I'm back Mr. Luke! And I've got a army of Hollows review with me!

PRESENTATION

The level badge is perfect, I love this kind of badges, they are original, well made, and fitting.
The description and level thread is awesome as well.

LEVEL

As soon as the level started, I knew you were a talented creator. The story was brilliant and funny, and the menu pretty and intuitive. Also, it an excellent strategy to put such a little level only containing the menu at the beginning, because the game loads it fast as lightning. Then the actual level comes, but you are already intrigued by it.

My first complian is the simplicity of the very first gameplay seconds. Everything in the level respecting to graphics is pretty fine, but this part felt soooo empty. You should really add some decorations, houses or something in the background:

http://i2.lbp.me/img/ft/67276ff13e599bab533857204e55b39c3fa5dda6.jpg

And then the actual level started. And I was like ZOMG. That's awesome. To be honest, I fell I'm pretty good at every LBP-creation art, except for contraptions and mechanics -that's why I'm not trying LPCC9 -, so I got astonished by the moving house. It was really great! Reminded me of a level in the PSP with a similar concept... But oh... The music choice for that section... I just felt it was absolutely random. Just my opinion though.

And... I reached the interior of the house. I'm not sure if the music didn't load properly, but I couldn't hear a thing inside it. And that made the level feel empty-musically speaking. Anyway, the gameplay was really nice! Really creative and original! Hard to see this days!

And... I arrived to thr part where this misterious guy worm-thing appears. Wheee! Music! And the efect with the guy's body is pretty epic .

I don't really want to say much more, to avoid any spoilers, but I really reccommend this level to anyone. Definitely a yay!

THE GRADES

Gameplay 4.5/5 This one really shone across the level. Such original ideas and concepts! Great! Would have loved a boss battle at the last room, maybe more explanation to why the house was moving, but meh.
Graphics 4/5 Only that detail at the beginning I mentioned, and that the theme may seem a bit awkward considering everything is happening inside a house. Its no ordinary house, that is!
Sounds 3/5 I really felt that no soundtrack across the level fitted at all with it. You should really consider modifying it, maybe you can compose/ask somebody to compose something for it!
Overall 4/5 Great level! I seriosuly expect much more of your work!

Hey! i played your level last night. i wanted to say first that your roots are showing lol. You can feel little big planet 1 oozing out of this levels well oiled mechanisms. Which brings me to my first point: The best part of this level was the intricate nature of the platformer itself. The initial "get into the house" part was challenging and very well thought out I've always lacked the capacity for making platformers that move and groove in sync with as much finesse as is done here. Jumping from moving legs onto gears and levers all while they move is not only hard for the player, its hard to make as well, and you did that wonderfully.

The overall design of the level was pretty good. The detail never really WOWed me, but you deserve credit for making the game look unique and not bare (except for one little time in the beginning ^_-) The steam-punk elements really fit the nature of the situation, but the lack of any background detail made the overall impact fall flat (except while in the house).

The first time I made it inside the house a funny thing happened... It went quiet... For a while. So I was walking along, jumping and wondering, "What happened to the charm?" If this game has a flaw, its the sound track. The odd little worm was accompanied by odd music, and this fit well for that intro, yet it continued on for a while into my platforming and it got old fast and made the experience biter. The music of the level felt like it was primarily stock, which is okay sometimes, but this level is so unique it cries out for the music to fit. I highly suggest modifying the soundtrack and perhaps (if you don't have this particular skill) getting someone to make some custom tracks for you. It would make this experience twice as whimsical and fun.

Visuals: 7.5/10 - A few bland moments stand out against the vibrant inner-workings of the living house.
Gameplay: 7.5/10 - A simple platformer. Very LBP1 with some elements of LBP2 (sackbots and such)
Sound: 5/10 - Most certainly the weak point of the entire experience. Keeps this from being a favorite.
Replay: 6/10 - Not likely to be a game people play over and over until their thumbs ache, but these style of platformers rarely are.
Story: 5/10 - Not too much in the story department. Simple, straight forward jumping from stuff to other stuff.^_-

Overall, the level is great. You worked very hard on many elements of the house and it shows. Keep it up ^_^
