Enemies, the Topic

Archive: 11 posts

Now then, let's get to buisness.
It is most likely that you've walked into a level, and out of the corner of your eye, and object, moving in a deranged manner, the position of it's brain is rather mangled, and on top of that, it's ways of "Attacking" are usually in the form of being fully electrified.
Yes, we've all been there, making enemies yourself is both hard to get right, and even more of a bugger to get a good look on it, at least for most people.
To be honest, enemies, bosses included, are the hardest part to any level to get right, especially if Magnetic Keys are included in the picture.
Some may find it no problem, and that some is a very small amount, but hey, when I sit down for an enemy I think:

"Where to begin?"

and:

"What'll make this intresting"

It's like making the level itself, in the form of a single model.
But take this too seriously, and don't get the wrong impression of what this is about, if you fancy showing off, go ahead, this is both for showcase and discussion...

phew , and if my fingers weren't bad enough from achieving High Score in ConfusedCartman's VR Training.

From what I've experienced, designing a character or enemy is almost as time consuming as designing the level.

I think I've spent just as much time working on my characters, as the levels that they are going in.

Making simple enemies isn't always hard(I made an invincible dragon and a tank enemy pretty easily). The only problem for me is making emitters and stuff. My dragon wouldn't work unless I took the emitter off. The Create mode glitches for me sometime.

But to make something like the final boss.... I have no idea how they did that.

Bosses are actually where I plan to put myself into expertees.

What do you need to know? I might aswell put my knowledge to the test.

I've been working on a boss, which I find fun.

But darned if I can figure out something for my lesser foes which looks good. I need some Hyper Evil Mecha Kittens, but keep falling short in the way they look. In particular, the normal-thickness layers just seem too thick.

So, any tips, or any pointers to levels with clever enemies would be much appreciated.

This might help you, or anyone I guess. It's a thread that talks about different ways to kill enemies.

I don't find enemies hard to make at all. In fact, that and the mechanics of it are the only things I can do, and imo, I do them well. That's why I just avoid platforming and level creation altogether and focus solely on the enemies.2009-01-13 04:10:00

Ok...

Enemy trick no. 1b (B for basic)

The Action Wheel.
This type of thing on an enemy is used to create routines in actions, like emmiting strings of objects and moving bits of itself around.
Basically, you attach a wheel, size is a thing you'll have to manage, using a motor as a connector, adjust it's speed as you go along.
Place a Magnetic Key either on the wheel near the edge or close to the wheel.
Depending on where you put it, place Magnetic Key switches attached to the enemy's actions either on or near it, in such a way that the Magnetic Key will activate each as they go past.
