Just showcasing an object I'm giving away (multi-coloured lasers)
Archive: 24 posts
If you have the MGS pack you will know about the laser, you probably also know it can't be tweaked and you can't connect it to a switch. Well I've managed to get a tweakable laser attached to a magnetic switch. I've created a level where I'm giving them away as prizes, there a four prizes: A single laser, tweakable with mag switch. A rack of 16 lasers with all the different colours. A rack of lasers which gives the impression of one laser changing colour. A rack with the lasers spinning. The level is called: Free Multi-Colour Laser Prizes!!!1873359 (search for Prizes!!!1873359 in South America) My PSN ID is: EastwoodAndy Below is a video showcasing the level, the second half of the video shows how I got the tweakable laser from one of the premade Mm objects: ODh7hWXCKz8 So you can either make the laser yourself, or visit my level and get some prizes (you will need the MGS pack to get the lasers) (I posted a similar thread in the Help! forum, but the description of this Showcase forum seems more appropriate. Mods, I apologise if this is classed as spamming, please lock if I've overstepped the mark) | 2009-01-12 16:10:00 Author: EastwoodAndy Posts: 70 |
Brilliant, thanks for sharing mate - Gave you a heart as well | 2009-01-12 16:56:00 Author: Mrgenji Posts: 803 |
Brilliant, thanks for sharing mate - Gave you a heart as well Thanks, have you thought of any ideas for using the different colours yet? Apart from the cosmetic examples in my level I've only come up with an idea to use them as weapon changes (ice/fire) | 2009-01-13 17:44:00 Author: EastwoodAndy Posts: 70 |
Well actually in my new level im working on there are deadly lasers that kill on contact, ive used the colours to distinguish the types of death it causes and the lasers that are safe I really wish they would make lasers a switch though..... I suppose now you can turn lasers on and off it opens up things like lightshows or perhaps some puzzle in darkness where the lasers point the way...hmm actually I quite like that Idea..... | 2009-01-13 18:43:00 Author: Mrgenji Posts: 803 |
Pretty cool stuff. And you could use them for Puzzles and you could use it to distinguish for the player what kind of weapon is about to be used. I will probably run into more ways to use them later. | 2009-01-13 18:51:00 Author: Hexagohn Posts: 335 |
I just thought of an idea for a level using Lasers and invisible walls.....make some invisible walls out of dark matter for basic platforms (so it looks like your walking on lasers) then you could make some more with electric dark matter, make it a different colour... you could slowly build a level out of lasers, sort of dont step on the red lasers or you'll die! | 2009-01-13 19:09:00 Author: Mrgenji Posts: 803 |
Incredible discovery... I'm going to disassemble one now. | 2009-01-13 19:34:00 Author: Unknown User |
I really wish they would make lasers a switch though..... Do you mean if you cross a laser it switches something on/off? I saw someone post a workaround by attaching the laser to a searchlight from MGS and just turn the searchlight brightness to zero - haven't tried it myself yet. That's a fantastic idea! This game never ceases to amaze me! (well the players too actually) Someone posted on IGN about a 360 game called Kudo, it's a game creation kind of thing but in 3D and with way more options than LBP. But I don't like the sound of it, I think one of LBP's strengths is the limited toolset. That's what makes peoples creations more impressive in LBP - the fact they've had to innovate using a relatively small selection of tools. I wish I could share some of my current ideas, but at the moment they're all around one theme for a specific level - and I don't want to ruin the surprise. I won't be able to put much time in it for a couple of weeks because of exams. At the moment I have quite a few contraptions and working gameplay ideas, but they are all standalone and not part of a level. So my next task is building the level, then making it look good! | 2009-01-13 19:53:00 Author: EastwoodAndy Posts: 70 |
the problem is the spotlight works in a conical shape, so unless its a very short laser the trigger area will always be wider | 2009-01-13 19:58:00 Author: Mrgenji Posts: 803 |
Wow, awesome. Thank you very much. Gonna check it tommorow and use the lightning in my own levels! | 2009-01-13 20:03:00 Author: Rhcpmikey Posts: 120 |

If the laser is moving you'd just have to stick them on a piece of moving scenery, sync it with the movement of the laser hidden behind a wall. | 2009-01-13 20:50:00 Author: EastwoodAndy Posts: 70 |
yeah but can you imagine the switchboard needed to manage that many prox switches? it could be done but the amount of effort it would take makes it not worth it | 2009-01-13 20:55:00 Author: Mrgenji Posts: 803 |
Yeah, good point. I guess it depends how long the laser is going to be, and how accurate you want the detection. If Sackboy would only cross the beam from one direction, you could probably line up the laser with the edge of the cone on the searchlight. I suppose any option is a lot more effort than just having a switch built into the laser. (I just tried fiddling with a searchlight for the first time, I didn't realise you can't turn the brightness down, only the search radius!) | 2009-01-13 21:12:00 Author: EastwoodAndy Posts: 70 |
Yeah, it is pretty sloppy and not too functional that the actual light part of the search light can't be tweaked... makes changing the radius almost pointless, as there's no clue for the player to know what the radius is. I just implemented a bunch of lasers into something of mine, and I haven't been this excited about a new item since I captured the paint ball. Thanks alot, man. | 2009-01-13 21:49:00 Author: Unknown User |
Woot ... nice discovery ! Never thought that we can disect the laser-emitting object Interesting find! | 2009-01-13 21:52:00 Author: RagnaMohawk Posts: 11 |
I used your dissecting method to get the collector out of his pod and turn him into a hamster lol. It's a useful know how. | 2009-01-14 19:29:00 Author: Hexagohn Posts: 335 |
huh I always thought he was some kind of chicken | 2009-01-14 19:36:00 Author: Mrgenji Posts: 803 |

Hopefully, it would work as well as I think it can. | 2009-01-14 21:08:00 Author: Voltiare Posts: 646 |
your welcome to it if you want to make it, I dont have the time or the patience atm | 2009-01-14 22:04:00 Author: Mrgenji Posts: 803 |
Illumina Garden 2 does that with spotlights and dark matter, but I think it would look alot cooler with lasers... and you could hide the laser box with a black rubber slivers to make it more seamless. | 2009-01-15 00:11:00 Author: Unknown User |
you could also use dissolve and the new ability to turn lasers on and off to make platforms/hazards dissapear | 2009-01-15 13:18:00 Author: Mrgenji Posts: 803 |
Thanks for finding this. I also like tearing apart MM's creations. Also in the level, with the spinning lights, when they are about to shine horizontally, it makes a really awesome looking color spectrum. | 2009-01-17 07:48:00 Author: whatisnarwhal Posts: 164 |
EastwoodAndy, what a great idea! I played your level and loved so much your multi-coloured laser. I used to add a lot of lights in my levels and your object is THE ONLY ONE I HAVE (AND WILL) KEEP in my community content object. I was thinking to do a "Way of Light 2" level! Now that i have your laser, i know that i i will do it!!! Moreover, the plateform with rotative lasers is AWESOME: there is here a visual effect that i have never seen before! Great Job and thank you a lot for this excellent custom object! 5 stars, ingenious, hearted! | 2009-01-22 09:27:00 Author: Takelow Posts: 1355 |
