Train - How to make it?

Archive: 20 posts

In the story level Runaway Train, the train is "moving" right? My question is, how to make this illusion? So, please, I've searched everyhwere but nothing good. Could you give me a detailed tutorial?
So sorry for posting yet another thread, but, well, you know.

In story mode, the train doesn't actually move, it's stuck on one position. It's the ground that moves. MM just made a emitter emmit ground parts one by one at a pretty high speed. I don't know any details about this though.

And don't worry about posting threads, you can never ask too many questions

The LBP2Torials video on scrolling levels should make everything clear. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GEplXDGqtAM)

You can either have your train not move at all, and just appear to run along the track, or, you can use the Speed Scale settings on a Tag Sensor to make vehicles stay in one place.
Place a Tag on invisible hologram, and a Tag Sensor on your vehicle, then wire the Sensor into your wheels Bolt/Rotator. When the vehicle gets closer to the Tag, it gets faster, causing it to stay in one position on the scrolling level.

Well here was my attempt at it:

http://youtu.be/nyeBN7fcq6g

simply put, the train doesn't actually move,

you put movers (going right to left) on the background pieces and then simply emit them in front of the train. You can add a second faster mover to ensure the pieces "join together" and deactivate it on contact so you don't affect the overall speed. Make the wheels spin with rotators and it looks like the train is moving.

The train needs to be held in place with anti-gravity tweakers or dark/light matter, to stop it falling and breaking the track.

Since we were also working with 3D (and this effect is compatible with the 3D glitch) we had some lag, so you'll notice we destroy what we don't see on screen... e.g carraiges exploding and an invisible destroyer destroys track off screen. Additionally the whole set up followed the player to ensure we could have minimum background pieces in the level at any one time.

I too feel dis-heartened, I take time out of my day to help a complete stranger and get shot down for it.

Don't expect further help from me.

I said sorry, I didnt mean that to insult you, but it made me feel stupid. So, again, sorry. But if you still feel insulted, then, I cant do anything about it. I appreciated your help and I will do it again. So, sorry again, I dont want any negative energy going around me and other members here.

Is there any chance you will forgive me? I really want to forget this thing...

Have you gone to the link provided by Oster or watched the video posted by David?

If, after viewing these two helpful posts, you're confused you could ask for clarification.

Insulting those who try to help you, will result in a lock.

Hold up, there seems to be some confusion here - The issue isn't that Silvantor is still unsure about how to achieve what he was trying to do, it's just that after some posts repeated something he already knew, he decided to respond like a smartass and that irritated myself and David.
The confusion seems to begin with Xaif's first post where he assumes Silvantor hasn't understood the previous posts.

Keep in mind, Silvantor, that when individuals like myself write up these help posts, we're not just writing them solely for your benefit. There could be any number of other people reading the thread who didn't already know that the trains don't actually move, so when people re-cap that bit, they're not trying to treat you like a moron, it's just written for the sake of a complete explaination.

Havent actually thought of that. I have already given my apologies. But I still dont get what xaif and Lady Luck said, because this situation is not about the help, so I dont know why you keep telling me if I watched the videos? I guess I misunderstood.
Also, so much confusion because of one stupid post is very much. Everyone have his bad days, so stop making this bigger than it is. I am sorry and I really didnt mean it like that. I appreciate your help and you are still blaming me as if I only said that thing and the other things like apologies and thanks are totally forgotten.
Sorry for acting like this, but the thing I said is not that bad. So, could you please forgive me and forget this thing? Nobody is perfect, okay?
Thanks and have a good day.

That's OK, I believe you didn't really mean to be rude.

I just wanted to throw that bit about writing posts for everyones benefit out there because it seemed important. With that out of the way, I have nothing more to add to this thread.

My apologies. From your post apologising, while it's not totally implied either way, I thought you were still seeking help on the matter as you don't outright say anywhere that you have got it working. Hence the reason I pointed out the video, as I thought you may have missed it. My mistake.2012-09-22 18:06:00
