Are long posts bad manners on forums?

Archive: 31 posts

Hey. I have a habit of writing long posts on forums when I'm passionate about the topic. I was on a forum today and they were talking about favourite Prince of Persia games and I went through the reasons why I felt Warrior Within was the best. It turned out to be quite long and after I posted it the thread died. This is definitely not the first time it has happened and I'm wondering if it's wrong to do this. I've never really seen it this way before, I always thought that no one was bothered reading it and so they didn't post. But then I thought about it and I'm wondering, is it bad manners? It seems wrong for threads to die after my posts but at that same time I like to give and explain my opinion. And though I despise people who post "Blog it" when people start threads, are they right?2009-01-12 06:56:00

No... What the heck? You have the right to post your own opinion, freedom of speech man. Fight the power!

But seriously... I don't find it rude at all, I actually like to read what people think about certain topics... That's just my 2 cents though.

Perhaps it's just the forums I posted it on. The forums in question (I'm not sure if I'm allowed to say which ones) usually have interesting topics and are extremely popular but most users post one-liners and a few post really long posts which are usually extremely opinionated and generally a bit rude. I'm sure a few of you have an idea which forums I'm talking about.2009-01-12 07:08:00

It's either people are to lazy to read, are speechless of your beautiful opinions or arguments, or are jealous. It is in no way rude lol. Keep doin what you've been doin, unless someone says something, than you'll know there's someone out there who thinks its rude, other than that, you're fine.2009-01-12 07:52:00

Depends on the forum. There are some forums where I will argue until the cows come home, and others where I will not argue at all and most posts are fairly short. Reason is that arguing on the internet is like trying to knit smoke. Incredibly time consuming and ultimately pointless.2009-01-12 10:42:00

Sometimes its warranted sometimes its not...
A 1000 word post on the weather might not be what most people want to read but sometimes if the topic is interesting enough, a great little (or big) debate an occur.....

As long as good spelling and grammar are present, and most importantly, the post is well spaced and well thought out, long posts are fine. We've had some great debates on here. One that encouraged me to stick around really was one between myself and some other members about the relative merits of PS3 and 360, where they were strong where they were weak, fanboyism was at a minimum, I thoroughly enjoyed it.2009-01-12 16:05:00

I do post long posts, and quite often.

I always try and space things out though, and if it's more than a few lines, I'll always re-read everything to make sure there are no spelling or grammar errors than I can see.

I'm an older person and I enjoy the value of written speech, especially if it's in a well thought out manner. Often I have trouble with the shorter posts, especially ones that are not that relevant to the matter at hand.

As others have said, there are several long debates and discussions going about this site, and in some topics it's almost rude to post a short response, to be honest.

All that being said though, to post a long reply does not give any real benefit to you as a person. If you are just talking too much, then I am sure people would lose the point you are trying to make, which would ultimately harm a topic being discussed in the long run.

So with that, I have said my peace.

Ok cool, thanks for the input everyone. My grammar, spacing etc. is always quite good so that's not the reason. I won't stop making long posts . And I guess I'll just deal with people not posting back. If a long post kills a thread perhaps the thread isn't worth continuing. Or perhaps as BobMarley once said:

if your posting somewhere people don't always read long posts you could put like a summary at the end of the post about what the post is about and more people might reply

Maybe nobody replied because:

a) Some people have been texting little parts of sentences so long they don't remember how to read an actual english sentence. So they are confused.

b) They have incredibly short attention spans from jumping between too many unchallenging LittleBigPlanet levels.

c) You said everything so perfectly, and everyone agrees with you so much that there just isn't anything left to say.

(I am used to being the last one to write on a topic. I'm also starting to get a complex).

Edit: Little while later.... nope, I'm still the last post...

Forums ought to have long posts as a rule, to state my opinion. I mean, you've got all this space, and it gets wasted with a couple of lines like "HAY THAT'S COOL BUT NOT AS COOL AS THE OTHER WUN.".

Hooray, and rejoice my fellow forumers, for today we can post to our heart's content! There is a very large upper limit, so write lengthy posts if you feel like you're up to it! Let's see how long we can get these posts while still remaining on topic.

Maybe that thread died because all the other people were spending so long trying to read it. If you're not sure if people will read the whole thing, put a TL;DR bit in there. Which, if you didn't know, means "Too Long; Didn't Read". It's basically a summary of what you just wrote.

TL;DR: Forum posts that are really short and unimaginative are better kept elsewhere.

The problem I have with that way of thinking is that not all posts that are short are completely pointless. Let's say I make a topic in the project section about my new level... Mudkip Land. (It's a stupid example, deal with it.)

So I get to working on the level, but no one replies because we have such a high character limit. I get no feedback, I feel disencouraged, and I don't make my level.

Most people need to get some feedback like "Good luck dude! I'm really looking forward to playing this. Could I possibly playtest it?"or they get disencouraged.

How would you feel if your levels never got noticed because no one ever commented on your level?

This isn't a debate forum. :/

TL;DR

We can't have every post being an essay, that's just irrational.

P.S. Don't think I like those spam posts any more than you do, but not all short posts are like that.

Depends what thread. If it's a forums specifically asking what your opinion is, then yes. I tend to make somewhat long posts on topics that are important to me.2009-01-13 02:17:00

If a long post is worth my time, then I'll read it. Otherwise I'll...

Sometimes people make unnecessarily long posts that drag on for way longer than they need to. There's a guy here who made an incredibly long and convoluted rant about games and it was pretty painful.
