Windows 8 - Vista or success?

Archive: 12 posts

So. Im currently arguing with my brother about getting windows 8. and hes all like "NO! I DONT FRICKING WANT THAT!" anyway. im thinking about getting another computer because we share one. and i was wondering. is it worth it?? ive heard some wacked up stuff about windows 8. about it being the next windows vista or being windows 98 but with a crappy UI added. but i beleive thats not true. ive looked up plenty of reveiws and it looks sleek and smooth. and its way faster. Valve ( A game distribution company ) is moving to linux. you know. that system everyone used like 20 years ago before moving to windows? but valve completely misunderstands. Microsoft can only control certain things within windows 8. only things on the appstore to be short. it does not limit peoples freedom to do whatever they want. you can simply login. click on your desktop on the start menu. then download steam without having to worry about microsoft infiltration. Valve can not grasp Adaption and get over it. Gabe newell says "They have made things that were very simple multiple step complications" Again. not true. Microsoft made it so you had an easy layout of everything the minute you logged in. Xbox live. App layout. Pictures, desktop, and more. sure. it may be weird using a thing probably designed more for tablets on a desktop. but its still a good system from what i beleive. and even reveiwers and microsoft said "Its a big rethink in windows. but once you get used to it. its a really good system" Valve thinks the slightest amount of control microsoft puts over a person who was one of the developers of 3 windows is a threat to there profit generation and there company. so why is valve putting a massive amount of control over there users and saying to Use linux or not use steam at all. wasnt valve the person that said the Ps360 was a horrible idea in 'Innovation' and should be scrapped? but look at valve. Portal 2, csgo, L4D, L4D2. all on PS3! but. my real question is. is it worth it? i mean. Blizzard. steam. and minecraft wont work very well on it :I this is all very confusing...2012-09-19 03:36:00

Good god it's horrific.

ive heard some wacked up stuff about windows 8. about it being the next windows vista or being windows 98 but with a crappy UI added.

The issue is that Microsoft are taking what everyone is fine with and chaninging it to something stupid and unnessecary.

but i beleive thats not true. ive looked up plenty of reveiws and it looks sleek and smooth. and its way faster. Valve ( A game distribution company ) is moving to linux. you know. that system everyone used like 20 years ago before moving to windows?

I dual-boot Windows 7 and Linux, and I use Linux pretty much all the time. School work, internet browsing, programming etc. I only use Windows for games. There are many doing similar.

but valve completely misunderstands. Consider that a lot of computer users don't understand the ins and outs. They use what's given to them and what they know. Pretty much all of my mum's side of the family wouldn't have a clue how to install software, and if the store makes it easier why would they use anything else?

and even reveiwers and microsoft said "Its a big rethink in windows. but once you get used to it. its a really good system"

I'm not sure what reviews you've read because all the ones I've seen hate it. This is opinion. The fact that there are many opinions that dislike it shows it's bad, but there'll always be some people who like it (as you seem to believe with Linux).

Valve thinks the slightest amount of control microsoft puts over a person who was one of the developers of 3 windows is a threat to there profit generation and there company. so why is valve putting a massive amount of control over there users and saying to Use linux or not use steam at all.

They're not saying this at all. They're making a Steam Linux client, they're not deleting the Windows (and Mac OS) ones.

Your opinion seems largely based on that of a gamer. Take a step back. Think about the average person who uses it for Office and Facebook. What will they do? They'll wonder how to get the 'old' Windows back, click 'Desktop' and go "there it is!". Then they'll find the start menu. Wait, why is this weird version up? Why does Internet Explorer on this weird menu work differently to that on 'normal Windows'? There isn't any reasonable explanation. 21 minute example (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X0fsyb-ttcw).

What avout office workers who use a computer every day but aren't very knowledgeable? A change this big means they'll have to relearn the system, and that'll cost the company valuable time. As a result, companies most likely won't bother buying it.

Also, welcome to the forums!

I've been using the Windows 8 dev preview for the last year on my laptop (a year and a day actually, I just checked ). I'd mostly used Vista on that laptop previously and from my experience with Windows 8, I definitely think it's a huge step up from Vista. It's even quite different to Windows 7, although if I was using 7 on this laptop I might wait until Windows 9 before upgrading I was a bit sceptical about the metro UI to start with, and even after a year I still don't use any metro apps, but as a replacement to the start menu, I think it does work really well and I quite like it.
I never bothered to update from the developer preview so the version I'm using is my no means an up-to-date build, and to be honest I don't really know what's changed since then, apart from the removal of the start button which I think was a bad move. I'm happy having the old curvy Windows logo in the corner of my screen. I'll definitely keep using this version until it expires next year anyway, I don't know if I'll buy Windows 8 then, I'll see how I get on with Vista again. Or I'll probably just use Ubuntu

I like the look of it. But really, it's the best possible thing for me:

I'm not a heavy computer user.
I don't really use the desktop.
I don't really use the start menu.
I don't like the windows taskbar.
I don't game on the computer.
I like using tablets, and could probably use one for all my computing needs (basically web browsing and word processing)
I like the look of metro.

So, Windows 8 is perfect for my very specific habits, likes and dislikes. But I'm sure most people won't like it at all.

Nice try, Microsoft Marketing

Oh wow that was quite the paragraph.

Anyway, having done dev testing on Windows 8, I can say I highly dislike the change. I understand that's not surprising since people in general don't like change (bit of mental inertia I suppose), so only time will really tell if I'm able to deal with the change. However I doubt I will, and it's mainly due to the fact that I highly disagree with the design decisions behind it. They want to merge the OSs for all their various platforms, which, while I understand has its pros for the devs, doesn't make any sense to me. Desktops, mobile devices, and 360s are completely different systems that should not have identical OSs. The tile system is frustrating on a desktop (though I learned many more Windows shortcut keys so I could better navigate....so there's that), and is only useful on devices with touch screens.

What? Pretty sure Linux is still around and used.

The pattern of good/bad/good/bad releases from Microsoft will continue as it always has. 8 has to be bad.2012-10-04 19:59:00

I think making Windows 8 more tablet frendly was the most genius idea they come up with, it was that missing thing that made there Tablet PC pretty much useless and allowed iPad to steal all the flame. But i don't like how they forgot about desktop users and make Metro UI painful to use for them, i think they should make desktop that way not start menu and leave start menu as it is and only apper when widows runs on desktop PC. Now they gonna take lesson hard way

But you know it's tradition that every 2nd Windows is let down... and i don't care much since i'm Linux user ;]

I use Windows 8 Profissional and it isn't giving any problems and its very good.

It works very smooth and by now, it has compatibility with all apps and programs i use (well, all not, as MM2 runs slow ).
