Waterproof Hologram

Archive: 10 posts

Hey there. I just had this great idea for water that would not be too hard to add. It would be a material like hologram that stuff can pass through but water can't. What i mean is you could overlay it with you submarine and have the inside dry as a bone while you are diving under the sea. It would not affect the buoyancy of the ship. So tell me what you think.2012-09-18 00:05:00

I'm surprised MM hasn't done this already, we need this2012-09-18 01:48:00

i know, it's so simple i'm kind of surprised.2012-09-18 03:54:00

it's anything but simple...

this would require a total overhaul of lbp water physics and layering, your essentially asking for "anti-pourable" water which has all the same limitations on the hardware... and to put it simply the ps3 cannot handle the work load.

ok take a piece of cardboard in some water, the water does not go in in it, it goes aroubd it, could'nt you just make hologram act like that?2012-09-18 14:31:00

Myself and several others have posted this idea before. A 'Water' material for pools of water and an 'Air' material for pockets of air underneath the surface.

Having read this, I don't think you quite understand the subject. The limitation on the hardware comes from the fact that dynamic water would require a massive amount of calculations in order to process where water could and could not flow. The physics are the hard part, having water separate and flow downwards as it is effected by gravity.
Simply having a hitbox with standard Hologram physics qualities is not a strain on the physics engine - objects simply behave like they normally would -
"Am I in water or not? If yes, float, if not fall."

Now, you could say it might be a tough material to render, yes. But it would be as simple for the physics engine as any other material.

fine... I can see the point with the physics, maybe what I had in my head was sighly more grand than the idea posted.

but it would still need an overhaul in how global water is presented. At the moment it isn't designed to have empty space, this would need to be adapted which would require work. These spaces would also need to be capable of motion so textures would need to be altered to support a "bubble". From a development point of view, and this late into the games lifespan, it would make sense just to start over with better hardware and gain maximum profit by shipping a new game with better water (including physics). I'm sure for a lbp game it could even be a major selling point.

but hey, I'm not a developer and don't need to do the work... so um, more loot?

...sure I'll support anyway

thanks ostler for clearing things up, sadly MM is moving on to a new IP so i don't know if this will be put in, maybe somebody from lbp vita will see this and but it in last minute?2012-09-18 23:26:00

I don't think so, there myth in LBP community going around anykind placeable water and ho its epicly hard to implement "due hardware limitations".... forgeting that games in 90s had palceable water in 3D space. Yes, water physic simulation is pain.... until you use them, no body saying that they need to implement water physics, they can just make material that switches mode between walking and swimming. Only problem i can is object behavior it may behave odd on water ends on specific angles and they can party switch stages, that might be major reason why they didn't implement it..... but defently thats not hardware limitaion

You have a good point, maybe it could just be a tool that you can use to select a hollow area inside a material to be waterproof. it would limit the idea somewhat but it would still allow for submarines.2012-09-29 22:41:00
