I've found how to change the colour of lasers!!! (MGS pack needed)

Archive: 28 posts

Hi, I'm new here. Apologies if this is old (I did search under laser and lasers but came up with nothing directly related)

You can't normally tweak a laser to change its colour or add a switch to control it

I was tinkering around with the MGS objects and found how to change the colour of the lasers! I've created a level with them on, it's called:

Free Multi-Colour Laser Prizes!!!1873359

PSN ID: EastwoodAndy

If you search "Prizes!!!1873359" it is in South America with a picture or Solid Snake. I have also uploaded a youtube video showing my level (which has four prizes with different laser contraptions I've constructed) and also how to construct your own multi-coloured laser:

ODh7hWXCKz8

Please heart my level (and me [face_blush] ) if you like what I've done. I know the level sucks and isn't a proper level, I'm quite a way from publishing my first proper level - I've got load of ideas and I'm a perfectionist so it pains me to publish something so amateur looking. But I haven't seen anybody mention these lasers anywhere, so I just knocked this together to share with everyone.

Well a laser isn't meant for illuminating a level, it's used for other things. Like a laser sighting on a gun for example, or you can combine it with lethal gas to make a laser trip wire, combine it with the searchlight to make a laser alarm system.

The laser goes through all objects and can stretch as far as you want, so there are loads of possibilities.

You could also use it in a nightclub theme where you already have normal lights but then use coloured lasers for extra effect.

I'm personally going to use it as a kind of weapon upgrade - changing the colour for different weapons (ice/fire etc).

Wow, props. Big props. I've been trying to figure out how to break down a Mm object to see how they work and I've been trying to figure out how they make the lazer turn on and off. Thank you for both lessons.2009-01-12 00:20:00

Did Mm cheated again? Last I checked, there was no way to tweak lasers. I don't recall if I tried attaching switches to it, but I've not heard of it working until now.

Either way, nice find!

I bet the laser is just a small light bulb with max radius.2009-01-12 01:14:00

Thanks, yeah normally they don't let you (a) tweak lasers or (b) attach a switch to them.

It's strange how the mag switch attached to the laser in the turret allows you to tweak the actual laser!

Interesting point.

The laser has different properties than a light bulb. A light bulb (like most light sources) radiates in every direction. A laser is a focused beam of light in only one direction.

Out of curiosity I've tried your suggestion with the fairy light and normal light - and it is nothing like a laser. It just acts the same as if the light was a normal size - only the radius is a lot smaller.

However, the spotlight is nearer - it does shine in a focussed direction. But even the smallest spotlight has a beam probably 10-20 times wider than the laser, and it's maximum length(radius) is about 5 sackboys high.

Do you really need to go through ALL that you did in the video? Or can you just go down to Lighting in the Goodies section of the popit and select the laser?2009-01-12 02:11:00

No, as I've said twice in this thread, the laser in the poppit cannot be tweaked and you cannot normally connect it to a switch. Maybe I should have added a section in the video where I select the laser from the poppit and can't tweak it and show how a switch can't be connected to it.

Maybe a dumb question but I am pretty new to LBP. Do you get the lasers from purchasing the $5.99 MGS stuff or is it found in normal LBP level play?2009-01-12 03:58:00

Media Molecule is cheating. I thought the official levels could be made by users. They even said it themselves. It's really deceiving.

The tweakable lasers and Level lighting switch. What's next?

those are probably things that didn't work properly when they wanted to release the mgs pack so instead of keeping us waiting they decided to disable them and publish the mgs pack instead. They will probably both be implemented properly later.

As EastwoodAndy has shown in this video, lasers can be tweaked, it's all there in game. It's not like it's not working properly now, and we can do everything we can think of with them, just only in this obtuse way.

Why they didn't make this more obvious or simpler is beyond me.

Try the level called "Disco Gone Wrong" is you haven't already. The guy is having a nice light show on the dance floor with people dancing and a DJ dude that speaks with scratch sound. It's awesome.

To be fair, they didn't use the laser colours themselves. It was probably something they were messing around with before they release it publically, and forgot to remove?

That global settings switch they used is just teasing though ):

Quick question, where do you find the lasers? I don't know if I've found them in the MGS levels but I can't find them in the popit. Would be nice to know where they are found (both in the levels and the popit).

Thx

The easiest way is to play my level and get the free prizes!

They are quite hard to find in the popit. In mine the laser is on the top row of contraptions, 5 from the left (this will be different depending on if we have collected the same objects from story mode).

The easiest way to find it is to open your popit, select goodis bag and press R1 to get to the collected objects page. From there, press Square then R1, and go down to Theme and press X. This sorts your objects by Themes, so all the MGS objects are grouped together - if you have collected all MGS objects the laser should be on the second row.

I'm not sure where to collect them from the MGS levels.

Whoa, you can sort the popit menu??? That's something new and great for a enthusiastic creator... Thanks for the hint, I'll check it out when I get home.
