Keep this site tidy

Archive: 14 posts

Some will say that this has nothing to do with me and perhaps you're right, but I'm going to say it anyway

When I look through this site I can't help but notice the amount of new threads relating to exactly the same topic. It frustrated me a great deal when no one new the release date and everyone seemed to be starting new threads about it. Mods have too much to do at the moment just moving content into the right section of this forum. The last thing they want to do is decipher what the heading is referring to, read through the OP, search for another similar thread and merge it. Don't you think that we could help?

I'm guilty of it myself but mainly because a search can't find, 'A question' or 'Something that bothers me' or ' Is it just me or is...'. If you are searching for something you tend to use the words associated with that search, so when naming your thread, try to make that heading easy to find with the search. What's more, if you see a thread about the Beta or the release date or anything related to what you want to ask or say, then put it there. I know the search function doesn't work perfectly, but the more people we attract to this site, the more messed up it's getting.

Please note that this isn't a rant of any kind, it's just a plea to help the mods (and others) to keep things tidy on this fantastic forum. So, unless it's a unique angle or a personal view on something that does deserve its own thread, consider what I've just said and understand the hard work that goes on behind the scenes.

Yeah, I'm all for clear, descriptive thread titles (as my latest screen-filling title proves). I've considered reporting these sort of things in the past, to help the mods, but I'm guessing that's not really what the report button is for. So, uhm, yeah, be mindful, folks! 2012-09-09 23:26:00

Whenever I've bumped a thread because it wasn't worth making a new one I got told not to do it...

Lbphart3, this thread isn't aimed at you. I could have picked thousands of examples to make my point.

It frustrated me a great deal when no one new the release date and everyone seemed to be starting new threads about it.

I have to use an example to make the point. It just so happens that you are one of the people who made a release date thread. And of course the reason that would stick in my head is because I made the official release date thread. Don't take it personally. I've done it myself without realising, but I still try to find a thread before I post, but like I said, some people don't even give you a clue what's inside. Look at the help section for instance. You'll get, 'Some help'. That could be anything and no one would ever be able to find that in a search if it related to their question.

Ayneh, if you have anything related to a thread that already exists I doubt that the mods would be upset about it if you added to that thread. If the bump has nothing to do with that thread then I can see why they'd be miffed.

I've actually seen this time and time again. Even when there has been a relevant addition to the thread, if it's been a few months since the last post, they're generally declared necroed and closed. Any other forums will slate you for not using the search function.

Are you sure? Why would a mod promote repetition by condemning people for adding to a thread that already exists? That's the opposite of every other forum I've ever been on. Well if that's true I think it needs changing.2012-09-10 10:59:00

I don't mind repetitive requests in the Help section, and repetitive complaints or self-promotion aren't so terrible so long as they remain in their appropriate sections. In fact I'd say LBPC's readers and posters keep things more tidy than most sites. But that may be the result of mods doing their job so well that I just don't notice when when wildfires of nonsense break out.2012-09-11 04:36:00

The help section is different, although even on there it would be helpful to actually put what your problem is in the title2012-09-13 23:50:00

I don't think it's right to make duplicate threads, even though if the previous thread got locked. Let's say that somebody bumps the thread. The mod locks it because it's old. So another person creates another thread with the same topic as the bumped thread. I don't think that's acceptable.

The thing about old threads is they were often posted in by site veterans and ex-forum members. People come and go at lbpc, and I see no reason why newcomers shouldn't be able to have discussions that they weren't here to participate in the first time around. Whether that means starting a new thread or bumping an old one is irrelevant....the important thing is that they should have the opportunity to bring their new perspectives to topics that some older site users might consider dead.2012-09-15 01:10:00

Well, I agree with that, Ungreth. What I'm talking about is when people just deliberately ignore a topic because they want to have the OP. Take a look at the early release of LBPVita for instance. And why not give the thread a title that makes sense so that we can search for it easily? I searched high and low earlier on for a thread about the rumoured 16GB Playstation that was to be coming this year but couldn't find it. Eventually I posted new information in my 'news of the day and rumours' thread. An hour later that thread I was looking for popped up. It started with the word 'Allegedly...'. How could I have found that?2012-09-15 02:12:00
