Pseudo Cluedo (working title: LBP themed board game level based on "Clue(do)")
Archive: 20 posts
Supmike got me wanting to work on a board game level, and just about the time I got sucked into the project, he stopped working on his version of Monopoly. So I have mocked up a Clue(do) board and am setting about making it pretty. One big difference in my version is that instead of Miss Scarlet(t) and the rest of the usual suspects, I was planning on making myself the victim and have various lbp community forum admins be the suspects. I have enlisted supmike to handle the bits that are beyond me, and hope to get cut-scene savvy xxMATEOSxx to work on the animated bits with me. I had initially intended for the creator curators to be the suspects, but felt that might require lessening the charge to theft or kidnapping, and the game would change too much. Update: There is now a hardwood floor that the gameboard rests on. It looks about as real as the wall studs and window in my signature. As do the six sided dice that will rest on it. Since there are 18 game cards in play durring the game, I have a player inventory that only that person can see (on the hardwood floor, same as the game board) which displays your dice, up to 9 cards (when there is only 2 players) and a pad of note paper with your evidence tally. I came up with a chip that can read a dice roll and add up the results (as in, activates a chip assigned to the resulting number, so a signifying tag ... or anything else ... can be placed on each chip that represents a number between 2 and 12 when activated.) It will also be player specific so the board knows which player is allowed to move around durring a turn. Tonight I am going to implement a system I cooked up in my head that makes every dice roll unique. So that they are not only randomly selected, but (within the parameters I set up) also randomly placed. http://i7.lbp.me/img/ft/b47c38795f0f91ca5e97374326f6394654c74a1d.jpg http://i6.lbp.me/img/ft/0f6ad74f979d5d106ed9d01fb034219cfe0bdb2b.jpg http://i6.lbp.me/img/ft/0a6549e58f5b0ba6f02aa4eee8a875684068f288.jpg the font here is only a stand in. It is the upper case of a font I made from scratch. For this game, I will be creating a font similar to Times New Roman. I anticipate people staring at the same graphics for the majority of the game, so I want them to be as flawless as my abilities allow. | 2012-09-08 20:10:00 Author: DreadRandal Posts: 434 |
Hi there. I actually planned on making a similar version but never continued with it... But I like yours better. Well done and great thinking... I really look forward to this. Any help I can be, be happy to If you like. But great idea and graphics my friend | 2012-09-09 01:04:00 Author: Sean88 Posts: 662 |
Sadly to say, I've never played Clue. This looks very interesting, though! I would love to see the logic for this. | 2012-09-10 01:24:00 Author: Kalawishis Posts: 928 |
I mocked up a couple suspect cards. Collage art isn't my specialty, but I suppose I did okay. These are't final. There will be name plates and possibly borders added. I think the suspects will mainly just be friends, like these two. These guys have been helping me with card management and consistant dice rolls which only activate once per turn. My random dice placer works incredibly well. Every throw looks like dice were tossed on the floor and it is never exacly the same place. http://media.drunkduck.com.s3.amazonaws.com/users%2FRandal%2Fassets%2FxxMATEOSxx.jpg http://media.drunkduck.com.s3.amazonaws.com/users%2FRandal%2Fassets%2Fsupmike.jpg | 2012-09-10 13:33:00 Author: DreadRandal Posts: 434 |
H there. I like the detail on your suspect cards great work. Only thing is the names my friend... are you not calling tem Col. Mustard, Miss Scarlet... etc.? Just curious... they look awesome. Cant wait to try this one out.... I loved Cluedo | 2012-09-12 10:39:00 Author: Sean88 Posts: 662 |
I was actually thinking of doing this after my current project. Probably won't bother now. I was actually gonna have LBP characters as the suspects. It was only 50/50 though whether I was actually gonna start working on it. This current project has been going for 6 months, and it'll be another few months before I come close to publishing it! I'm gonna be mentally exhausted by the end! | 2012-09-12 11:36:00 Author: Ali_Star Posts: 4085 |
H there. I like the detail on your suspect cards great work. Only thing is the names my friend... are you not calling tem Col. Mustard, Miss Scarlet... etc.? Just curious... they look awesome. Cant wait to try this one out.... I loved Cluedo No, I'm not using the usual suspects. I want it to be more personal to the LBP community. I was originally intending to use the creator curators from LBP2, as there are six of them and six suspects... but that would be wildly out of character, as the alliance are supposed to be noble and good and Clue characters are all suspect in the Boddy/Black murder because they are all people of ill repute. (at least, in the movie they were.) To use LBP2 characters would require massive story or game changes that would either alienate the player or lessen what is at stake. I then thought of using fan site mods as the suspects and I would be the victim. Then I thought, "they don't know me from Adam" and while mocking up these cards of the two of my friends helping me iron out logic bugs and card management, I decided to just keep myself as the body and make my LBP friends who are active in the community the suspects. I have a third guy suspect in mind, and two female volunteers. So really, I'm in need of one female suspect, but will use a fourth guy if there aren't any more girls who want to admit to me being their PSN friend. Joining Mike and MAT on the suspect list are willing recruit silmedriel and volunteer Sakura. I will give them all amusing fake bios that should both make you laugh (or at least smile) and provide eligibility of possible guilt. Seeing as I don't really live in a mansion based on a Clue game board, I figured taking liberty with the suspects back stories would be okay too. I appreciate everyones comments. Thank you. Update: I am between internets, so this is a phone pic instead of a screen cap. This is a work in progress pic of my third suspect. As you can see, all that's left to do are the arms, legs, wand and name banner. Mateos has been working on a card management system that also deals the cards where needed. I can't wait to see it in action alongside my dice roller. http://media.drunkduck.com.s3.amazonaws.com/users%2FRandal%2Fassets%2FWIP_silmedriel.png | 2012-09-12 19:11:00 Author: DreadRandal Posts: 434 |
Hi buddy. Ahhh... My mistake. I Think thats a cool idea. The personal touch is a nice way to go. If you need any ideas or help, be happy too. It's looking good | 2012-09-17 02:11:00 Author: Sean88 Posts: 662 |
Thanks. I'll keep that in mind, though for the moment, my hands are tied. Minor update: Finished art for the "silmedriel" suspect card. Still no border or name plate, but I did spend a few hours crafting a serif font for this and future levels. I jokingly call it "times new randal". I used it to label the rooms on the game board. I like it more than the last font I made. http://media.drunkduck.com.s3.amazonaws.com/users%2FRandal%2Fassets%2Fsilmedriel_art_done.png I know it's not a huge update, but I didn't think to take pix of my font and I was itching to show this finished pic. Well, I DO have pics of my font, but they are in game screen caps of game-board room labels that I can't upload until I get the cable company out to set me up in the new place. (I'm using stickers on holo because fonts, especially serif fonts, are high on poly count and I want to save on thermo.) | 2012-09-17 15:27:00 Author: DreadRandal Posts: 434 |
I love Cluedo, so I wish you the best of luck with your project. Perhaps the 'weapons' could include LBP stuff like the Paintinator and rockets | 2012-09-23 18:09:00 Author: kirbyman62 Posts: 1893 |
This weekends progress: Aside from one that could stand to be slightly redone, the weapon cards are done. As with the suspects, I chose not to use the ones from the original. (Those being: candlestick, dagger, lead pipe, revolver, rope, & wrench.) In Pseudo Cluedo, the weapons are: flashlight, fork, frying pan, hammer, scissors & yarn. I will take a pic of each card when I get home. (I might visit the idea of things like paintinator, impact bombs, spikes, danger tweakers, etc... with mike and mat. It isn't a bad idea. (could end up being an alternate version, or my weapons could be alternates, I don't know. We shall cross that bridge when we get to it.) I don't have any new suspect cards yet and none of the room cards have been started yet. There are a few ways to go with the room cards. I can either traditionally use the floor of the room as the design on the card, attempt to make it look like a snapshot of a traditional room, or I can make a surreal impression of things that symbolically represent that room. Also this weekend, Mateos worked on installing his card management system, supmike worked on player token (sackbot) movement, and fredbighed posed for a suspect card. I also gave the conservatory some greenhouse windows and improved the backside "face" for all the cards that you will see when cards need to be "face down". | 2012-09-24 17:49:00 Author: DreadRandal Posts: 434 |
Hi buddy. Sounds like work is going great.... definitely cant wait to see this one. For the room cards whi not go for a slightly abstract design. I like your suspect cards, youy should make the room cards in similar stlyle. that way, you can have a flow to the style. For your weapon cards, you could just have a white background and then a picture of said weapon with a shadow ... it woluld add anice dramatic design effect. My advice buddy, keep the weapon and room cards clear and identifiable as what they are... jmo :-D. Its looking better by the day | 2012-09-25 14:39:00 Author: Sean88 Posts: 662 |
Updated images of all the stuff I mentioned in the last couple updates... I took this before the pic with 3 face down cards. | 2012-09-25 15:35:00 Author: DreadRandal Posts: 434 |
Wow... Totally awesome... looks fantastic. Nice weapon cards mate :-) Really well done to all involved | 2012-09-26 00:08:00 Author: Sean88 Posts: 662 |
i would like to be one of the suspects if you don't mind. I just absolutely love clue. IT WAS THE BUTLER!!! (mumbles to self) How shocking it's ALWAYS the butler... I am pretty active on LBP2 as time and school alow. I love to create art and many other things i am a jack of all trades. I am more on the more decorative, artsy, fancy side of lbp. Just let me know if you want me on one of your suspect cards. Thanks, Ben21 | 2012-09-30 08:22:00 Author: Ben21 Posts: 127 |
I guess you can't rush a good thing. there were a few creative roadblocks in the way of working out a player control system that kept this project on the shelf for a good long while. Needing to take a break from my summer project, I came up with the solution I needed yesterday and spent my evening installing the framework for it. I think now I could comfortably come up with a rough playable version in about a week, and then fine tune it from there. A big part of getting a finished level is going to be thermo management. I am hoping that replacing heavily stickered cards with a sticker of a card will solve the biggest part of my dilemma. I'm also trying to cut back on materials and streamline my logic. Luckily, I have a couple friends who are efficiency experts. (when I show my logic to supmike, I can feel him rolling his eyes as he not only strips down my logic, but makes it run better.) | 2013-09-10 19:34:00 Author: DreadRandal Posts: 434 |
Man! Where have you been? Glad to see you here and happy to see you return to this project. | 2013-09-10 19:57:00 Author: biorogue Posts: 8424 |
So far this week I have outlined a player control device, mocked up the scoreboard area to look like my top down hardwood, mocked up the start menu, condensed a few cards down to one sticker each, and finished four room cards with three more room cards half way done. Everyone who has seen them tells me they look good. http://i2.lbp.me/img/ft/712c98708e4913704c555ada3c5004e76431a980.jpg | 2013-09-14 14:27:00 Author: DreadRandal Posts: 434 |
Nice! Lookin' good. | 2013-09-14 15:29:00 Author: biorogue Posts: 8424 |
I have been plugging away at this level. This week I created scrolling credits, worked on the character selection and start menu, some endgame stuff and selected some appropriate music that will cycle every time a player token enters a room. Still need to make seven cards and revisit the card dealing logic, then tie it all together. | 2013-09-23 16:03:00 Author: DreadRandal Posts: 434 |
