Backround Help

So my level takes place in gloomy island. To achieve this gloomy island feeling, I use the Temples Backround. There are parts in my level where it flashes to a scene in the middle of an ocean. The problem is, I cannot achieve an open water effect because well, there are trees in the backround. How can I achieve the illusion that you are in the middle of the ocean while still having the Temples backround? Is it even possible I'm thinking of using the 3D glitch but I'm not sure if it will work well. The lighting in the Temples is also a bit iffy. It can produce dark shadows and it has a golden tint to the lights which could ruin the ocean effect. I'm trying to create calm waters with blue skies (think of the normal plane backround) | 2012-09-07 23:25:00 Author: Unknown User ![]() |
just a thought but could you not use a large thin piece of plain material on the very back (thin) layer and paint it blue or something ? | 2012-09-07 23:31:00 Author: cthulhu82 ![]() Posts: 211 |
I tried, but the ship that's supposed to be in the scene creates shadows that goes onto the backround. Plus, it makes the scene even darker. | 2012-09-07 23:37:00 Author: Unknown User ![]() |
If you have the move pack a large piece of sticker panel in a 3d background layer could potentially work. I'll mess around and post results Edit: 41776 I'm not sure if this is what you're looking for but it's just an idea. And I have no idea how to add an image | 2012-09-07 23:42:00 Author: Radishlord ![]() Posts: 706 |
No move pack so I don't have the sticker panel. Anything I can substitute for it? | 2012-09-07 23:48:00 Author: Unknown User ![]() |
No move pack so I don't have the sticker panel. Anything I can substitute for it? Stickered 'blue wood' from the temples in LBP1 looks pretty good 41777 It's opaque so it completely blocks the trees out. (I chose blue wood because it stickers well, you can't notice the material's texture) | 2012-09-07 23:55:00 Author: Radishlord ![]() Posts: 706 |
Ok thanks. I'll try it out. I'll try to fix up the lighting and stuff to make it look lighter. Thanks for the help. | 2012-09-08 06:19:00 Author: Unknown User ![]() |
You mentioned you're not comfortable with the 3D glitch due to its unpredictable results but I think with a single piece of materialy you could create a very nice effect. You would be placing a very long, flat "plane" of material using the 3D glitch that spans most layers, then place a camera with a fixed, dramatic high angle looking down so at it that the 3D material fills the view, and all that's really visible is the character and the water, even when pulled way back. It will obscure the trees in the background, and it will make use of ambient light in the level without casting shadows as it's a flat plane beneath the player, viewed from a high angle. casting shadows as you'll be looking from a high angle down at it. If the scene is just for looks, that should work a charm. | 2012-09-08 08:43:00 Author: Unknown User ![]() |
arbiekko's idea sounds good, and if you need help with 3D layers check my signature for tutorial links. I'd also suggest playing with the Fog settings, choose a blue color and increase the fog density until the background is obscured. | 2012-09-09 19:30:00 Author: Pookachoo ![]() Posts: 838 |
