Savage Planet - A Spaceman Spiff Adventure

Savage Planet (http://lbp.me/v/fbd26p)

Step into the role of not-so heroic and crash prone inter-galactic adventurer Spaceman Spiff in this hybrid shooter/platformer.

http://i1.lbp.me/img/fl/d4136fe1f187a3dcc0b55eab6108b7bb73012997.jpg

This level began long ago and unfortunately was abandoned for being plagued with issues and riddled with game play that didn't quite work. The attempt was made to salvage it while waiting for LBPV. Due to the extended production delays Spiff was able to get out of his contract and now doesn't actually make an appearance in the level. We did manage to retain the use of his red saucer however...

This is where you come in...so what do you say, feel like taking a spin around Proxima Centauri?

Great use of the 3D glitch. I did run into a problem at the Queen wasp area. As much as I kept shooting her/him, nothing was happening. The mini wasps were shown with points but that's about it. I kept shooting them for nearly 10 minutes. Was there something more to it. Other than that, everything was incredible2012-09-06 18:00:00

Yes, the Queen wasp is immune to paint (your shots pass right through)...there's another way out of that chamber that she facilitates. The little wasps are just meant to keep you moving, they are only worth 10 points and you lose 100 if they sting you. I never know how much of a hint to provide...I thought I'd provided plenty of clues but the complete % is pretty low. I do think the wasp area is the weakest part of the level.

Thanx for clarifying that. I'll be sure to play it again and give a full report. Edit...

Wow, this level has some of the best visuals I've seen by far. From the bubbles to the silk worm, everything encountered was amazing. The gameplay mixed with the puzzles was fresh and innovative. It took a little to figure out, but definitely worth the time, considering what was involved to create such a masterpiece. Definitely my favorite level from you

Gotta hand it to you.... Even though this level was tough for you to finish, it was well worth it. You managed to mix diverse gameplay, some fantastic puzzles, and some of the best visuals I've seen in a lbp2 game. Not only that, but also added in some terrific story elements and a really cool style,

I've been a fan of your stuff for a while, but I think this one is my favorite.

Really cool stuff you got in here! my fave was the ground worm, you executed that idea just perfect, I had to smile when I twigged what was going on. Gonna play through again to get a decent score up there, but on first play the two things that weren't that obvious are the wasp solution and the worm platforms. The idea is bang on, but you can lose a lot of lives working it out. If you're in tweak mode, I don't think you actually need to change anything, just make the solution spots a little more obvious with colouring or something, as they blend in to everything a little too well....

........

Playing through a second time, and those spots are now obvious when you know what you're doing, so I dunno.

I opted to do something less than subtle for the wasp...I don't think knowing what to do hurts that section and I don't want people to get stuck that early.

For the grub, the rocks were way too flat and just didn't stand out even with the spotlights trained on them. Now they mound up and should be more obvious. I also added a very small triangle of solid material to catch a toe briefly and let you know something is different there (this gets dissolved when the rock raises to not affect jumping from rock to rock).

Congrats on the 1st respectable score jules...was it all from the shooter or did you find any of the 10 secrets, they are 10k a piece. I'll report the ones found below the scoreboard, but it's not that obvious so I wonder if anyone noticed.

If people like the level they can thank CCubbage as he convinced me it was worth trying to save. The bubbles were a fiddly nightmare...I was finally able to get them working fairly well by gluing 40 small pieces of metal to them?!? It's good to be done...I don't like leaving projects unfinished.

I'll definitely give this a go! queued

ok, so I'm playing it now. What am I supposed to do with the giant bee and the giant wasps it spawns? I've tried everything so far. Am I supposed to kill the giant bee or break through the floor? lol.

strike that, I've done it. Phew

Well, I finally managed to finish it and all I can say is WOW. A corny, overused word that's lost it's impact because of overuse but nevertheless the only word that suits what I just played. I just loved the innovation in this level. LOVED IT! You seemed to manage to make LBP feel less two dimensional. I don't know if that was deliberate or not but that's what I couldn't help thinking. If I was to suggest just one thing (and this is because I'm pretty bad at games) is to add an instruction here and there. Unless I missed something earlier on, I just couldn't figure out that I had to make the giant wasp hit the floor... But I did do it in the end so perhaps that suggestion is somewhat redundant.

Great visuals, great use of materials, excellent lighting and innovative gameplay. BRILLIANT

Now I'm going to play your other levels!! Back soon...

I played this level a few hours ago and I had a blast playing it. The visuals are filled with great decoration use, amazing layer glitches, and cool creatures. The level also boasts excellent platforming ideas such as the bubble rides, a worm knocking off the rocks, and the start of the level's shooter gameplay. Another excellent job on a visual masterpiece platformer.

Hi Matt, thanks for stopping by!

Thanks Justin, your reviews are always appreciated.

Gribble, you must have missed the bullseye in the wasp area, I show it briefly when the queen first appears when the camera pans to the rock to break. You chose poorly for your 2nd level, people seem to find Gilded Platforms difficult. At least you didn't pick Bubble Ghost HD, it's impossible...my biggest level failure.

The complete % has gone up quite a bit (was around 12%) so I think the tweaks helped a lot.

Wow, another great level from you! O'm surprised how you fit all that detail into just one level. It had unique gameplay, a classic story and amazing visuals that will blow your mind from the very moment you start playing it. You never fail to impress me with any of your levels, and I don't think you ever will. Good job.2012-09-08 20:29:00

It's rare to have a level where literally every picture taken looks amazing, but this level takes the cake (whatever that means). I have never seen a level with such masterful use of the layer glitch or with landscapes and creatures as detailed as this. You really feel as if you are in an actual place with it's own unique environment, which is something that few levels (or even games) manage to do well. You can really tell how much thought went into designing the creatures, technology and vast, epic landscapes. There's also barely any lag, which goes to show people that GOOD VISUALS NEED NOT BE LAGGY AS POO-POO! I don't know how long it took you, but it payed off well.

There are a couple of camera issues multiplayer (specifically near the Raymanish bubble parts) that make it a bit frustrating and unfair, but it's probably my fault for playing it multiplayer in the first place. Again, I don't normally thank people for making levels, but thank you for showing unwashed plebes such as myself how it's done.

Zounds! I cannot get past the grub worm that pops up from the ground! I can see the rocks to jump on but before I can get there, Pow! up he comes. Level looks awesome and is great play wise. Just player error here. Here is my problem area. As you can see, it gets me every time right here.

http://i0.lbp.me/img/ft/4206623c45804825a0ab2c638a56682b2019d4e6.jpg

Nevermind, I was jumping and realized had to run past this spot then jump on rock.

I had a bit of time, so I figured I'd write down a few more of my thoughts on this level.... mainly because I think this level is really something special, and creates such a diverse collection of gameplay it demands multiple play throughs to appreciate.

Very beginning - I LOVE the opening story. The silence was a bit disconcerting (I felt there should be a bit of ominous music in the background while the opening story is read). Great opening, however.

Arcade shooter part at the beginning - flawless, IMO. The ship takes skill to fly, and the slight unresponsiveness FEELS right. Also, the tracking missiles move at just the right pace to require skill on the player's part to shoot asteroids, and at the same time maneuver behind the missile to take it out for additional points. I managed to get around 120,000 points right at the beginning.

After crash landing, the backgrounds are some of the best I've ever seen. I actually ran back and forth in this area to see how you painted this masterpiece. Definitely the most fully realized custom background I've ever seen. It creates a full feeling of immersion. It's seeing this part months ago that inspired me to beg you to finish this game.

Inside the wasp nest - Once again, fantastic gameplay. One of the things I appreciated in this part in subsequent plays is the different strategies that can be used. You can sit at the bottom and fire until your finger goes numb, or you can bounce around and lead the wasps away from the rock. Terrific stuff.

I'm going to make a quick observation about this puzzle while I'm here. One of the tools "Tomb Raider" used to help a player solve a puzzle was moving the camera to where the goal was, and then let the player make observations to solve the puzzle and get to the goal. This could be applied to the puzzles in this game. The reason people don't figure out this puzzle right away is they don't think of going down as their goal - they think of killing the queen bee (wasp... not sure ) as their goal. This could be solved by maybe having a rock with a small split in it, and panning the camera towards the cracked rock as an observance. From that point, the player is trying to figure out how to get through that rock as their goal.

So the story would be this - player enters area, sees a rock that looks like it could be broken. Says "How do I get in there?". Then, they're attacked by wasps. The first time the queen wasp attacks them, they think "Hey, maybe SHE can break the rock!"

Running from the worm in the tunnel - Loved it! Although, I think the first time the player experiences it they will always die - mainly because their attention is probably on how to kill the worm, not to watch for a rock to shoot. I think this is more a camera issue. Maybe pan the camera a bit to the left during this part so the players attention is more on where they're running.

Worm under the ground puzzle - brilliant! I thought the way you portrayed the worm crawling under the ground and popping up was really cool. Going back to the first time I played it, it took me a bit to figure out what to do. I think the reason is it didn't occur to me the goal was to get up to the top of the rock to the left.... for some reason, I thought I was supposed to kill the worm or find some kind of cave entrance to the left.... or even shoot something.

I think it would help if the player realized what the goal is, and then leave it up to them to put the pieces together. For instance, as soon as the player walks into the area pan the camera to the top of the rock on the left to show their goal, then pan back again to show them the layout.

These were just some thoughts on the areas. As a whole, though, this level totally kicks tushie, and I'm planning on playing it more times to see if I can get a higher score. It bothers me a bit that I see such a high-score potential but I lost my points being careless.

Great stuff, thanks!

Very beginning - I LOVE the opening story. The silence was a bit disconcerting (I felt there should be a bit of ominous music in the background while the opening story is read). Great opening, however.

Good point, I?m completely oblivious to the absence of music and easily forget to add it.

Inside the wasp nest. So the story would be this - player enters area, sees a rock that looks like it could be broken. Says "How do I get in there?". Then, they're attacked by wasps. The first time the queen wasp attacks them, they think "Hey, maybe SHE can break the rock!"

A huge problem with this level is the paintinator itself. I felt Spiff needed to have a blaster and originally I intended to do more with it. With what I ended up with it often does little more than confuse the player.

You?re right of course, panning to the rock when first entering the room would be more obvious; I kind of hate when games hold your hand to this extent; GOW3 is a prime offender?I should probably do it anyway. The rock has always had a large crack in it, emits falling rubble, invokes hazzard controller rumble, and makes a cracking noise on impact. It's also a different material and color then the rest of the floor (even still it blends in entirely too well) and it's also shown briefly with a bulls eye after the queen emerges. No one is going to notice any of this however, because there?s a bug ugly bug flying around and you?re equipped with a paint cannon.

It's Savage Planet, not Picnic Planet, lol! Yes, I've thought about tweaking the camera here?the camera attached to the grub?s head is zoomed way too far in?I tried to compensate by putting a camera on the column you have to shoot, but I really need to grab a copy of the grub from the emitter and fix the head cam.

Worm under the ground puzzle - brilliant! I thought the way you portrayed the worm crawling under the ground and popping up was really cool. Going back to the first time I played it, it took me a bit to figure out what to do. I was hoping for more of a cave exit look to highlight the destination platform?it certainly didn?t turn out looking that way. Maybe I can start the cam that follows the grub up there?I?d hate to add yet another camera pan here. For a while I had a visible checkpoint up there but I didn?t like the look of it?had I created some sort of themed check point that would have been a good solution.

These were just some thoughts on the areas.

Thanks for taking the time to write this stuff up. Maybe I?ll go for another round of edits tonight?I also have an idea on how to address the multi-player camera issue in the bubble section. Post-level apathy has already started to kick in though and Tekken Tag 2 comes out tomorrow.

I just pushed a new version with the suggested changes so hopefully I didn't break anything and future players won't need to be so eco-unfriendly.

Also, if anyone tries multi-player let me know how the cameras are now. Bird-dino section should be good now, less sure about fish section, and final ascent seemed ok as is. I was able to sort of test using a 2nd controller...
