Flat View in Play Mode?
Archive: 11 posts
I've been pretty desperate, since soon after I got LBP, to see an option to activate the Flat View you can get in Create mode in the actual published level. I think sometimes it could come in pretty useful, especially in single plane levels, as you have more control over the camera. I've been working on a side project for the game, and having to get everything in the frame was a bit of a pain, especially when players wander off in different directions. It was hard to get the angle right too, so that the player/s can't see something they're not supposed to, or so that an item or a path isn't obscured by a platform jutting out or whatnot. When I flicked into the flat mode though, everything was much easier to get into shot though. I just wish I could keep it like that when it gets published. It'd also look nice, as a change in visual style too, I could see it working well in the Sackhouette style levels. The only downsides I could see are people abusing it, and making levels which are pretty much impossible because you can't get a good feeling for the layer you're playing on. But I guess that's their lookout really, if it ruins the gameplay of their level, and it wouldn't be too hard to change a toggle to set it back to 3D mode again, or something. Not sure if this has been suggested before or not, but I've just had a quick look through and couldn't see anything. Apologies if someone beat me to it anyway! (Haha, sorry for the wall of text, didn't realise how carried away I was getting until I posted.) | 2009-01-11 15:51:00 Author: Ace Posts: 118 |

You can limit a player to just the one plain by blocking off the other ones with background walls. I don't think it's too hard to hide mechanisms at the moment either, you can always have them a long, long way away, the wires will stretch to pretty much any length. Placing mechanisms directly above or below the player but a reasonable way off will mean they will most likely not be seen. If you are limiting the player to the front plane, you could have a filler background wall in the middle plane and then put all your switch bits behind a wall if you like. Apart from getting a different look to one's level, I can't see why you would want something like this though. I find the default camera is quite reasonable. I may have troubles with multiplayer when they force the camera to zoom out, but as a whole it's not too bad right now. Certainly, it can be a problem with custom background when the camera may pan out, but it's not impossible to get around this with a bit of planning. At least that's how I see things. | 2009-01-11 20:56:00 Author: Elbee23 Posts: 1280 |

True, but I don't like to keep the mechanisms too far away, so they're always easy to get to when it comes to editing. Apart from getting a different look to one's level, I can't see why you would want something like this though. I think the different look is reason enough to be honest (like I said in the OP, I think levels like Sackhouette could really benefit. It'd look even closer to a shadow puppet theatre), and traps, holes and secret passages could be better hidden without worrying if the player can see them from points of the level. I suppose it just boils down to how you build your levels, and what sort of things you want to do with them. welcome to LBPC And great idea too! Perfect for hiding stuff! Thanks and thanks! | 2009-01-11 21:55:00 Author: Ace Posts: 118 |
No No No!!! Sure it might add a nice little retro edge, but really it's just annoying for levels that involve more than one level.. and extremely impractical | 2009-01-12 18:38:00 Author: Pinchanzee Posts: 805 |
Haha, like I said, if a creator wants to make their level annoying that's their prerogitive d: It's not like they can't find another way to make it annoying. Anyway, don't really want to keep trying to argue my case every time someone has a different opinion, each to their own, but I guess I'm not too keen on "some people might make a bad level with it" as a sole argument against something. | 2009-01-12 18:51:00 Author: Ace Posts: 118 |
well i personally think this is a great idea, and after trying the front view i was thinking the same thing. And some of yous are saying the levels could become really hard, aslong as they are limited to one layer i dont think it would be that complicated at all, it'd be plain and simple 2-d platforming like back in the mario days. | 2009-01-12 22:23:00 Author: Xx_FAF_Sniper_xX Posts: 67 |
