Tomb Raiders (From The Sky)

Tomb Raiders (From the Sky) // BooShift1 // Australia

This level, currently titled Tomb Raiders (From the Sky) is my first published content - it was first published about a month ago, and has been heavily modified since then. It follows the adventure of your sackboy or sackgirl as their treasure hunting plane is struck down and you must escape the wreck in your parachute to reach 'Generic Temple #43'.

I put a lot of work into visuals so it looks pretty nice to boot, and has some tricky/intermediate platforming sections. Some practical puzzles are scattered through the stage, nothing too mind-bending though. Visual style is maintained through the stage and the level includes a progressive soundtrack to spice things up a little bit.

The level fumbled a bit when I first published it - it was perhaps a little too hard for some and hence it is now stuck with a lowly two stars - but I've refined the stage through multiple versions now and I think it may be worth your time!

My PSN is BooShift1 if you want to find the level easily, I'll update this OP later with images when I can find my USB stick...

So yeah, have a go and leave feedback here afterwards if you'd like, tell me what works and what doesn't! I'm willing to do 10 Feedback4Feedback's, but feel free to add comments beyond this.

If there is anything I have missed/need to add to the OP, please tell! Thanks!

Tomb Raiders (from the Sky)

I love the start, with the plane wreckage and falling through the clouds , your visuals are also very nice.

The momentum bit it a very very good idea, genious!

Improvements

Maybe a little more guidance around the clouds and around the swingy bits. Also, maybe you should find music which relates to the level, and some sound effects.

I don't know if it was me that did something wrong, but that black door that is meant to go up didnt go up for ages, until I climbed the steps and ran back down again.

You might need a double life checkpoint on the swinging over the coals bit, I died there and had to restart the level, which I didn't really want to do.

Despite this, I'd say your level is a good 3/5, just needs minor improvement with guidance, as well as trying to figure out a system that makes it less frustrating to fall right down to the bottom of something and have to restart - and think about the music.

Please leave feedback for my level City Nightlife, cheers.

Yeah, guidance is my biggest flaw in the level...

I'm glad you like the start and visual style, I put a lot of effort into it so thank you.

May I just inquire regarding the first point I bolded? Guidance around the swingy bits makes sense (I have quite a few swingy bits, though! ) but I'm not sure about guidance through the clouds. The idea was people just grab onto the parachute and float down to the temple, with the clouds on either side forming a straight path down to the bottom. Do I need to fix something with the clouds? Put more in to make a definitive 'you must go this way' aid or take some away from other parts that don't make up the path?

As for the music, I thought the int. music I included fit the jungle/temple theme rather well, but I can definitely have another look to see if there is anything better. I'm not sure which int. music I used though... maybe savannah?

As for the black door, it uses the physics system to work (all natural! no winches/cogs/anything!) - did you pull out the grass 'wedge' from above (where you fall down from the checkpoint area) from the wall that the black door is stuck in? I've put visual clues on it and the same visual clues at the area you're suppose to pull the grass wedge to, but if people miss this they must either just try to pull/push the door for long enough to dislodge the wooden implement and make the door 'open', or just quit here... Maybe I'll make it easier?

Regarding the 'swinging over the coals' bit, I deliberately put an infinite checkpoint spawn there, so if you only got 4 lives to tackle that challenge, my apologies, I will have to rigorously test the machine again to see if I can duplicate your act. It's always been infinite respawning each time I've played it... maybe I somehow broke it when editing the level for version 1.5? Hmmm. Thanks.

As for falling down, that's why I included double-life checkpoints (I only ever use DL-check points) on every level as you ascend the temple; so people could self-destruct and start from the same level without having to redo previous parts. I don't want to explicitly say "if you fall off here, just respawn yourself!' as that just breaks any feeling of engagement the player might have had with the level. Will try to think of a solution though.

I'll think long and hard to make a super-duper update that attempts to fix all of these. I'll look through my LBP music folder (in the game) to see if there is anything more appropriate, but as it stands I like the progressive percussive soundtrack.

Will make sure to play your level!

can you get some videos???

I wish I could - I don't have any way myself to record video and my level of activity is not high enough to request video recording on this site, so a video isn't available for the time being.

I can get images, though, although I suppose they'll only be the tiny ones from the server, the PS3 isn't connected to a big LCD screen to take good external photos either. Are server images fine to include in such a thread?
