Derelict (one player horror)

Archive: 8 posts

Hello there. I have tried to create a creepy experience here using atmosphere, rather than pop ups of jason voorhees etc that i see so much all over the cool pages. It has sat on my moon for over a year now, and i finally published it last night. I would love to hear what you guys think of it. Also i'm not online much,i only play on weekends, but i will queue your levels and play them as soon as i can. Thank you.

I'm a sucker for a good horror game, so I played this tonight, and wow...there are some scary bits. Definitely promising in that arena There were a ton of nice touches that you added that really impressed me, like the way some rooms were obscured by a black barrier that fades when you entered them, revealing the contents. Sound effects are excellent. You never get a clear look at the monsters, which I think really adds to the suspense tremendously.

Couple of things that I thought could be improved:

- narration is a little thin. The level description hints at a backstory, but none is ever revealed. When the ending comes, it's a bit abrupt.

- camera work - the camera seems zoomed in a bit too much for the majority of the level. There were several times that details (like chapter stickers or holes in the wall) are obscured from the players view because something in the foreground is blocking it with the camera zoom. Also, it switches angles rather abruptly too often for no reason, which can be frustrating when the environments are almost completely black.

- Lighting...yeah I know you said not to bring it up, but there's a fine line between creating tension with a room full of dimly lit objects and frustrating players with completely black environments. Consider perhaps adding some fill light here and there when it gets really dark... if you observe the lighting in almost any horror film, you'll notice that if the scene takes place at night there's usually a lot of blue fill to simulate moonlight.

Thank you Radishlord xoxo, and thank you Chazprime, i agree the camera could use tweaking at certain points but the rest will stay the same, i wanted there to be zero light so you cannot see what is ahead of you, also some rooms are hiding frozen people in the dark that can be seen if you hold a big sticker up behind them. But i will check it again to see if some areas could do with a little brightening up. I've hinted at a backstory yeah but i wanted the players to make their own guesses as to what happened, i think it's more fun that way. I will queue and leave feedback for Donkey Kong, probaly be sometime tonight.2012-09-09 10:00:00

No need to F4F for me, I play through all the Showcase levels here for Spotlight consideration, so my feedback is on the house
