Lost Underground [My First Platformer]
Archive: 22 posts
http://lbp.me/v/f96nb4 This is my first attempt at a platformer. It is semi-fast, and quite simple. You are underground in the savannah and must get out as quickly as possible. Hope it's not complete crap. http://i4.lbp.me/img/ft/8c424e04130e71a45f4848f29a22c737570bad2c.jpg http://i2.lbp.me/img/ft/01203d95ea8c58dc4a346384354c5c2ce9cafa8d.jpg http://id.lbp.me/img/ft/7cd9debf95d5d30862a523b777b5b3e3c3110562.jpg http://i2.lbp.me/img/ft/5b2cd5a101c615149a560095b3d8c83a3b448133.jpg http://i6.lbp.me/img/ft/bb613e62771a695aa97b93a57ed232de2e1275c9.jpg | 2012-09-01 17:16:00 Author: curtislarkin Posts: 157 |
It doesn't look like complete crap. Queued. Edit: Okay it needs some cleaning up, when you slide down the path it's too hard to jump and catch the wheel. You might be better off with a jump pad there to help you reach the wheel. On the next part it's possible to hit only the first button and get trapped in the area with the jump pad. I had to restart (forgot about just popping myself). Other then that it's not all that bad, a tad short though. | 2012-09-01 17:55:00 Author: anarchowolf Posts: 194 |
looks good. added to the queue | 2012-09-01 20:37:00 Author: biorogue Posts: 8424 |
It isn't bad at all especial for a first try. A bit short but good nonetheless. The slide was hard until I noticed the little ball with the string attached. You should really make it more visible or add a bounce pad instead. It was plain yet effective yet a tad too dark. Overall quick easy and simple? | 2012-09-01 23:30:00 Author: wheelbbase911 Posts: 54 |

in the queue! | 2012-09-06 01:57:00 Author: shortcaque Posts: 36 |
A fun, straight-forward platforming level; my several times through this left me with few complaints. There's nothing ground-breaking here, but a platforming level doesn't have to be revolutionary to be enjoyable. A bit short, but a good overall time bouncing and bubble-collecting. The only two bits of criticism I have are as follows: The room with the rope-swings (wherein you hit the button on the right to lower the wall to the left); some sort of indicator that I'd activated the bouncepads on the floor would have kept the pacing up, as you can't see them, and reaching the third swing (all the way on the left) is a bit of a stretch if you lose your speed on the way. The single "puzzle" in the level, requiring you to toss the box on the switch, felt a bit out of place in a platforming level, and slowed the action down a bit for my liking. Otherwise, an enjoyable, if brief, little platforming level worth a play or two. Well done! | 2012-09-06 10:43:00 Author: EvilWuun Posts: 152 |
Thank you for that and both valid points. Thats why i did jump back in create mode and fix em. Now the activation of the pads as an indicator and the box throwing is no more. I made it something a bit different and much faster, Simply to keep up pace. | 2012-09-06 16:38:00 Author: curtislarkin Posts: 157 |
I've just replayed with the updates; much better in my opinion. The level flows more when I don't have to stop for a brief puzzle segment, and the lights indicating where to go in the other room serve their purpose well. Good job! | 2012-09-06 18:46:00 Author: EvilWuun Posts: 152 |
Thanks a lot. Glad you enjoyed it. I'm pretty proud of it for it being my first platformer | 2012-09-06 23:13:00 Author: curtislarkin Posts: 157 |
For a start, the level badge is hard to read. (I'm writing this review as I play along) I like the styling, the two wood colours work together, and it has nice, simple visuals. The wooden wheel is difficult to grab after the slide, but I managed to shuffle up the wall. Nice use of point bubbles to keep the pace up and add a sense of urgency and speed to the level. The next section is nice and fast. The combo can be made with a reasonable amount of skill, which makes the level good for 'advanced' players. The huge wheel placed on the corner of the platform after you shoot up will kill you if you hold on for too long. I don't know if this is intentional, but I think it would be good if it de-attached you automatically: http://i7.lbp.me/img/ft/c674776c42ac0857c4674edd7e6199a6ba79950f.jpg The Wheel of Death.... Oh noes, the level is over now! Bit short, but what's there is good quality. Graphics: 7/10 although simple, they are pleasant to look at and not overdone. Music: 8/10 the track fits in well with the theme and the gameplay Gameplay: 8/10 Good fun, good pace, but too short!! Don't be afraid to repeat a section later on in the level, but change it slightly. Please F4F the level in my sig, Sigma Prime. Thanks. | 2012-09-08 18:11:00 Author: bluesteel789 Posts: 159 |
Thanks for the review and high marks. I'm glad you got some enjoyment out of it. I did want the wheel like that because if you let go too early, you'll fall back down, too late, you'll get crushed and just right, you'll land the rest of the score bubbles. I did that on all of the wheels that are close to walls like that for that sense of urgency as you stated. I'm playing yours as we speak and i'll leave you a review in game. I'll fix up the level badge after i finish your level. | 2012-09-08 18:21:00 Author: curtislarkin Posts: 157 |
oh snap, this looks good, dangerously good, I'm gonna queue and play it in a bit!!! | 2012-09-08 18:53:00 Author: Rixsch Posts: 239 |
it is good back platformers really need good visuals and longer levels to get into the hearted lists of most. it was also often different to advance. but I did like it, not to be mistaken their was good visuals and good platforming the speed is great. if you make another platformer let me know. or maybe if you make a story based level. if you do start of slow and get faster, make changes often in the level to catch interest, I can't stay too much because most would probably agree that with a first level like that you are much better creator than me | 2012-09-09 01:28:00 Author: Jonarrthan Posts: 310 |
This level was challenging but still quite fun. It's definitely designed as a single player level though... I managed with two but it was quite difficult. I really liked the design and visuals of this level. You did a great job creating a natural looking environment with perfect lighting. I did find a few of the challenges a bit tough but all in all, this level was pretty good. As for the F4F, feel free to check out one (or both) of my levels (https://lbpcentral.lbp-hub.com/index.php?t=72941-Metal-Gear-Sackboy-Unraveling-Stitches). | 2012-09-09 07:17:00 Author: Unknown User |

I already gave you feedback on your Metal Gear Sackboy levels a while back. If you have another, i'd be happy to check it out! | 2012-09-09 17:37:00 Author: curtislarkin Posts: 157 |
Ah. No worries then. I have given both levels a facelift recently but nothing all that new gameplay wise. No need to check 'em out again really. Cheers! | 2012-09-09 19:15:00 Author: Unknown User |
I'll give them another look. No problem | 2012-09-10 02:18:00 Author: curtislarkin Posts: 157 |
It was very nice & challenging. There were a few good things and a bit of bad things. Lets start with the good. I loved the obstacles; some were hard, some were easy. Like the style of it but try putting some rocks or dirt, because the title says Lost Underground. Maybe it's supposed to be a Mine because thats what it seems to be with the wood in it. The use of stickers isn't really necessary but it looked great the way you used them. The worst thing i saw was the part where you first see the grapple hook. Try slowing down the wheel. I kept dying the second you push the button and the wheel switches direction. Also, when going up while using a bounce pad, try making the player land on something. Like a In-Out platform. Other than that, great level! Thanks for the feed, I'm currently updating it. | 2012-09-10 19:27:00 Author: DawnBreaker_23 Posts: 568 |
Hey, Thanks for the review. I also thank you for the feedback you gave. I'd like to address your concerns. I'm doing a huge update to give it more of that feel of being underground. and i'll look in to the wheel speed aswell | 2012-09-11 14:51:00 Author: curtislarkin Posts: 157 |
Great! This seems great! Queuing right away Hopefully I'll give some feedback later EDIT: So, played your level. Here's some feedback: Presentation The level badge was nice, but I didn't like that you divided the word underground in two parts, seems odd. Level I liked the level a lot! The mad chains you could do with score bubbles was amazing, and fun to try, anyway I think that some of them could have been better placed. The design was not bad, but it felt too simple. Adding much more decorations (sticker panel works great in this kind of levels) would do the thing. The length was OK, but I felt it finishes pretty much too fast. The obstacles were nicely designed, my only complain about this ones are for example in this part: http://ia.lbp.me/img/ft/f0ac94922d087d67a0d0c40ffb096615780d7e0a.jpg In the 2 or 3 parts of the level that used this obstacle, I don't think it was really clear that you have to grab that thingie so that you can get an impulse. You should make that thing brighter or something. Pretty small review this time Lol. Time for the grades! Gameplay 3.5/5 Nice ideas, the fast pace never made the level feel like OMG-I-can't-see-what-is-happening, so that's a strong point. Kinda short, needs some polishing though. Graphics 3/5 Needs a lot of work. It looks pretty, but needs much more decorations and stickers and stuff. Sound 3/5 To be honest I don't remember to have heard a single sound in the level, but as I'm probably wrong, I better speak about the music. Fitting, nice, enjoyable, kinda simple. Great choice! Overall 3/5 Pretty good work! You can surely develop that talent I know you have by making more levels and learning from your mistakes. As my friend Jaeydan would say, keep creating! | 2012-09-12 02:17:00 Author: yugnar Posts: 1478 |
