Kerberos 26.476 AD

Link: http://lbp.me/v/f8b-2n

In the year 26.476 Earth has been lost to mankind for millenia. The last remnants of our once proud civilization are scattered throughout the universe, travelling through the void in ancient colonisation ships in desperate search of a new homeworld.

When the AI that navigates deepspace colonisation ship Kerberos through the Eta Carina Nebula encounters a strange irregularity in the fabric of time and space it wakes you up from your deep cryogenic slumber just in time, before it loses control of the ship.

Now it's on you - can you save the Kerberos and the ten thousands of souls that sleep within it, or will it turn into a steel coffin for its population, replacing their hope by doom.

About the level/ idea / process of creation:

I had big plans with this level - I started it around the winter holidays last year and spent nearly every night from the evening until the early morning of this holiday working on it. In contrast to the cute'n'funny level style my three level before had, I wanted to create a "dark sci-fi" scenario, that should "feel" a bit like in the movie "Event Horizon". I also love the sci-fi concept of books like Dune, which do not play in the near future, but leave the present tens of thousands of years behind, so I deceided to do a 25th millenia story rather then just going two or three hundred years into the future.

After the holiday however, I began playing other games for a change and did not find the time to finish it the way I planed.

The masterplan for this level was:
- Lots of storytelling - movie sequences, voice acting etc.
- A very dark, maybe even depressing and mature sci-fi/horror storyline
- In the first part of the level you have to find a way from your starting point to the command bridge of the spaceship. Gameplay wise this part is a mixture of platformer and puzzler.
- In the second part you take control over the ship and the level turns into a classic parallex side-scroller with different waves and formations of enemies and a final boss before the ending movie.

What I (didn't) managed to do is:
- The first part is completed the way I wanted it, but the intro and the "ending" don't tell the intended story (so read the story-part above before playing!), they just work as a framework for the gameplay part now.
- No voice acting, thermo was already full enough
- No second part (yet)! I have done the groundwork for the side-scroller part, but logic and design still need lots of work. I may continue with this part sometime later, but for now part one ends with a simple "to be continued" scene
--> The final level is not completly what I had in mind when I began creating it, but I think it has a great design and atmosphere and it's worth a play!

Lots of thanks to Z1091990 for his help with the design and to dreamer84 for help on the rough sketches in the early parts of the level! Also I used music that was given away in an unknown community level - it's a track from the "28 Days Later"-Soundtrack I rearanged a bit. If you happen to know the original creator, please let me know so I can give him/her credit here!

Traveling through the entrails of the Kerberos - don't stand in the way of the plasma pulses!

Actually this isn't in the level - it's a screenshot from a proof-of-concept of the side-scroller part - it looks awesome in motion!:

I'm happy for every comment and every play - not because I'd need plays for a trophy (already got that) or for my ego (ok, maybe a bit ^^), but because I spent lots of time on this, even if I had to cut the project short in the end

Please play this level alone - it might be buggy in multiplayer!

Oh wintermute, I've waited so long for your level and now its finally done! I'm so glad about it. Just played it and its soo fantastic. I've been speechless! What an experience! You've created your spaceship so detailed nearly thought to be in a movie theatre! And this permanent feeling of loneliness and being threatened in this giganic ship is absolute convincing! The wonderful design and the fantastic gameplay make your level to a unique artwork! More please, more!Greetings from Bavaria, Jürgen^^2012-08-31 18:35:00

just played this and have to say a big WOW! I wasn't too keen on the exterior of the ship but the interior really knocked my socks off. Loved all the details and mechanisms on display and you've done a great job with the puzzling aspect of the level. Really, really like this. Excellent work.2012-09-04 04:24:00

Edited.

Just played it.

This was fantastic,I loved the details the dark spacey fill.http://i0.lbp.me/img/fl/aa0b75d06b5a3945101b9899ad1ced529b0d6e34.jpg

The puzzles are great i really like how you have to be interactive it makes the level more funn and enjoyable.

The only thing that i'd suggest like once some one has finsihed something like have something pop up to let them know to go back up to the control room cause lol i pushed the thing in the tunnle and stood there waighting for something to happen and then i thought i wonder if i need to go back up there to the control room..But other than that i really loved the work and the detail you put in to this.!http://i6.lbp.me/img/fl/d86f784bc21c0120cc659368c02a91c04648bbee.jpg

Thanks everyone for all the nice comments

@biorogue:
Yeah, I'm not fully satisfied with the exterior of the ship myself (it's based on an CGI-Image I found on google image search, the original looks awesome!) - but I had kind of a creativity block after I had done it the way it is now, so no more details where added. The first version of it looked completly different, but after I finished it and had a look at it later, it didn't like it at all. It kind of looked like a running robo-dog (which was not intended ^^), that's why I named the level Kerberos (even after the look of the ship changed).

@Lbphart3:
Sorry, I kind of missed your comment! Yeah, I guess some players end up wondering what to do after activating that energy-thing - but I think the puzzles would be too easy, if I'd point them directly to it If you pay attention while using the control monitor the first time, you'll notice that there are more than two options and one of them doesn't work at the moment.

As the level has no highscore board at the end (maybe I'll add a temporary one), I don't really see how many players really play the level through to the end. There actually are three times 500 bonus points hidden in the level.

Thanks to the LBPC staff for mentioning my level at the #94 Spotlight!

Also, many thanks to Dini, who made a Video of the level - if you are stuck at some point, you can use it as kind of a walkthrough
I added the video to the first post!

Hi wintermute,

in return congratulations to your winning of the communitypick (August) of our German LBP-Forum and to your being mentioned in the spotlight94! I'm a fan of your "Kerberos"-Level since I've played it for the first time! Love the scenery, the atmosphere and the gameplay! I totally agree with your opinion concerning puzzle elements in levels! They shouldn't be too hard or frustrating but they also shouldn't be too easy! I'm thinking that your puzzles have the right severity neither too easy nor too hard! I liked them (maybe because I could solve them without help^^)
I'm wishing you, that many people will love your level like I do!^^

Many greetings, Jürgen^^
