MY EXPEN$IVE HOBBY: A little rant/love letter to LBP2

Archive: 5 posts

This is a personal tally/story for fun and sharing, but by all means add yours!

I got sold on LBP2 when people posted beta videos on Youtube.
Until then I told myself I would get around to playing it, but "meh".

Now it seems like ♪ Everything I doooooo ♪ I do for LBP2 ♪ (cue the Bryan Adams karaoke!)

-----------------------------
So. The rundown.
-----------------------------

I live in Japan.

Australians love to brag, but Japan gives them a run for their money when it comes to expensive games.

LBP2 cost me 9800 yen ($117 USD). At first.

Anyway.

I got addicted in a hurry. Not to creating, even. I just loved collecting stuff in the story levels.

Of course, I convinced myself that the only way to create proper was to have all LBP1 materials too.

So without having experienced much of LBP2 online, or any of create mode, I bought LBP1.

Call it an expansion pack to LBP2. Or, you know. DLC on disc. That's what I considered it.

LBP1 cost me another 10,000 yen ($120 USD).

Then, of course, I got hooked on trophies. I got the Platinum for both games.
Then knew I could get to 100% trophies with LBP1, if I got the DLC. So, there was that.

The thing is, Japan again. Procuring a $50 US-tied PSN card offline, the only way I could do it,
cost 7200 yen ($85 USD). Within a few days I'd spent the whole card on various LBP1/LBP2 DLC.
For $50 worth of stuff. That I never even use to create! I just liked collecting.

It was around this time I admitted I had an addiction, and went cold turkey. For a while.

Then, LBP2 started dropping delicious new DLC. With trophies. Oh god. OH GOD!

Yesterday, in a minor bit of compulsive shopping, I finally bought the Move pack.

I didn't make it 24 hours without rushing to every game shop in Akihabara (Japan's electronics mecca)
asking... BEGGING!... for a Move controller and a PS Eye. Which I told myself I would never get.
Of all the overpriced trinkets related to anything, it seemed like the worst deal.

Cost of the Move controller and PS Eye: 6200 yen ($76 USD).

Including other stray bits of DLC I've purchased over time,
I've spent an estimated 40,000 yen on this franchise.

That's $480 USD.

Of course, thanks to the Welcome Back program due to last year's hack, I also have 7 copies of LBP 1 and LBP PSP each.

But if I'd never been involved in that, still: $480 USD for basically two games.

Sheesh.

well I find nothing wrong with having a hobby you care a lot about. just as long not absolutely all of your money goes in to it. and of course not all your time of day every day too. i mean even spending about 6 hours a day on a hobby should be alright long as you have the free time, but any more then that probably would not be good if it's all the time...

Heh i know i myself buy almost all the DLC. also movepack was pretty easy for me since i got everything you need for it really cheap from ebay. *mew

Well as long you are happy and your life is in order then it's all fine. i just know that sometimes if you spend to much time on a single hobby to often it can start to become less fun after a while and you'll start to rant a lot about things in the hobby. xD *mew

It's been funny how I'd never seen the need for any PS3 peripheral hardware until LBP came along. First I had to buy the PS Eye, then a keyboard for communicating with others, now the Move controller! What's next??!

Without LBP, this stuff would be pointless.
