Can't Attach Magnetic Key Switches to Pistons. Bug?

Archive: 10 posts

Ok, this is really annoying for me right now since I'm trying to make an elevator which uses a piston to lower itself once it approaches a magnetic key switch. For some reason 90% of time I can't connect the switch tab to the piston. I tried shifting the switch to another layer but that didnt work. It only worked for me once and that was after I moved the switch to a standalone platform, connected it, and moved it back in the elevator shaft.

Is this a bug or a limitation? When I try to attach the tab I get the "can't do that" sqeaky noise. For this reason I decided to make an OR gate because I couldn't connect 2 switches to the same piston (although I should be able to connect multiple switches/buttons to other things). Now the tabs won't connect to the OR gate pistons! Argh!!

Any help with this? Tips/tricks? Has anyone else had this problem?

He's right. One connector tab per connector.

What causes the elevator's initial lowering?

Sometimes wires won't connect when a switch is set to do something that the piston, or whatever item, can't do. For example, trying to connect a switch set to One Shot to something that can't do One Shot. Already connected wires will turn red when you change it to a command they can't carry out.2009-01-11 04:26:00

But one switch is supposed to be able to connect to how many other things?

I can connect at least 3 thing with the same stamp switch but when I tried to hook a third piston on the same match switch, the game wouldn't let me.

So how many different things can you connect by one switch and does that number changes depending the type of switch?

Also, I can't connect a proximity switch if it's place in a thing layer... Is this normal?

you cant choose the layer your switches are on, only what you stick them to2009-01-11 04:33:00

That must be it then. The switch wire that was connected to the piston turned red after changing it to one-shot. I figured one-shot would work with pistons as a single cycle or something along the lines of that.

What I'm trying to do is first have the elevator car slide horizontally onto a lift, triggering a magnetic key switch. The switch triggers the lift, which brings the car down slowly. Once the car gets low enough it triggers another inverted switch to stop it. Since I can't connect more than one switch to an object I suppose my OR gate will come in handy.

One more question though. How do you make a piston move from one side to the other and stop when a switch is triggered? (Actually this alone would work for the lift) I see this with pretty much every logic setup.

Hmm, I've connected up to 4 things to one switch before and assumed there were no limits to that, unlike the one switch per item limit. Not sure what your problem is here.2009-01-11 04:44:00

A permanent directional switch.

just change wench to piston and the button/sensor to w.e you want to press/activate to start the lift.

You can connect a switch to as many things as you want. Meaning you can have as many wires running from the switch to another objects. One thing you can not do though is attach lets say 2 switches to the same object. And you can not attache more than one Piston to the same object (I think this is most of the time but you can attach a single piston to an object, have 2 of those and then those attach themselves to a single object in the middle lets say, by a rod and you can get a rocking motion going) because if you do the pistons work against each other, and the game looks at it and does not know what to do so it shuts down the pistons.

I believe there is a way to do this, I just blanked though. Sorry about that, but i will try to remember soon.

Cheers!
