Are we ruining the community of Little Big Planet?

Archive: 21 posts

Are we? what is going wrong in the community? have you experienced any distrust on the community now?

what are your thoughts on the community? i'll love to know. Just like you, im worried about the community now too.

Seeing the levels that is on the community, mostly isn't for older audiences, making them complain about the lack of imagination. But seeing as its a PEGI 7, do you think we are over reacting as in all seriousness. it is a kids game?

This is an open opinionated post. As im trying to gather the views on the community to put in my film.

Edit - By "WE" i meant the community on the game.

If by "we" you mean this site there's a policy of no naming and shaming here, so this site has eschewed responsibility for dealing with any bad apples in the community.

Most people feel disempowered. It's why you see the countless threads about cool pages, MM picks, people splintering off to form their own groups, etc.

Disempowerment leads to resentment which leads to an Us vs Them mentality. People lose respect for those in authority and become disillusioned with the system. Regular people with populist appeal start to eclipse those in authority and become highly influential. Then there is a power struggle where the existing authority figures prove their impotence and lack of leadership by coming down on everyone like a ton of bricks. In the end there's mass desertion or mutiny. That's how I've seen it play out before.

If LBP wasn't predicated on attention and real action were taken against bullies things might improve. In the long-term, though, you want a self-moderating community and I think that means making the regular users feel empowered again and giving them more responsibility.

You ask if this is all too serious for a kids game, but you have the same problems in a school playground. No kid wants to play there when it sucks.

That's what the Fema camps are for

I think that the shortest, fairest statement I can get behind
no matter where the conversation goes is that
LBP is not nearly the mess that it could be.

It's kind of like Diablo III, the way to play it without getting annoyed is to ignore the community entirely. I don't, but I don't get mad about it. Not sure of the whole point here though.

Also, I would advise against another ****ed film based on this if that's what you're making.

I don't mean to be rude but perhaps discussions like this are part of the problem. Many, including me, are unaware of this so called disillusionment with the community and just carry on as normal... I'm aware of it now though and will probably spot it more often. I wasn't really aware of that Latin guy, but then after several threads I knew about that too. Sow disappointment and you harvest discontent.2012-08-27 18:22:00

I started to notice the bad smell around the community around the time of the Creator Jam, a lot of people weren't particularly happy about them.

Simple explanation: teenage angst. All teens think they're lives are a living hell. Until they grow up and find out that adult life has real problems and they wasted their young years on nonsense.

I play games to escape life's problems, not to make the game my life's problem.

Eh well it's not like being "good" in the community has any benefits or is even considered.. So at times trolls & people with bad activity are promoted by Mm while cool pages run rampant with people that abuse it. Then a majority of the communities less intelligent/mature people blindly follow all the "kewl" things they do. Not to mention legitimate creators make crap effortless levels themselves and positively review them for teh lulz. Like we need any more crap effortless levels & them being promoted

IMO if you do any of that you're not helping anything but conforming to the crap that has become our community.

It is a privilege to publish a level. It is a privilege to be able to get plays & recognition. So publishing anything that you know was effortless & pointless spits in the face of our ability to do so while taking away from those who actually worked hard at what they did. Not to mention positively supporting levels you know are terrible because you think it's funny. Sure lbp shouldn't be taken seriously, it's a kids game (in which usually adults & teenagers are the ones that thrive?), but is it the excuse that it's a kids game that makes us all act like children I guess.

Make your planet a happy place and a good resource of other great planets. That is an ideal community.

The thing that gets to me is how most people nowadays create for their "fans," and tend to stick to making the same kinds of things just because they're popular. I kinda miss the days of LBP1, back when people weren't so afraid to be different. Back then, "inspiration" wasn't known as "theft" either.

Not to mention how people seem to idolize and worship trolls now.

It's interesting how the lbp community mirrors real life, isnt it?

If you want to have fun, do what I do - find friends, create based on your imagination instead of popularity, and ignore the community as a whole. Way more satisfying.

This statement really resonated with me. I forgot that I felt that way. There's definitely more of a temptation to follow trends now, which impedes the creative process.

Thanks for this bit of encouragement. You're absolutely right. Sadly, I have to admit that lately when I think of creating, I think "What would get the most plays?", or "What would please the community at large?", rather than "What would make me most truly happy?". Part of it is because I know I will put so much of my time and creative energy into it, and I'll want to feel rewarded coming out the other end. I need reminders like this that freely expressing my inner self to people I have positive relationships with is the more fulfilling reward.

Sort of like burping and making everyone gag? Or maybe politics. Never understood them. Tragedy is usually what attracts a lot of people nowadays, but there's really plenty of good stuff happening. I guess it's the same with the community. People make it seem worse than it is, and it's not fun anymore.

Might wanna change that to "some" or "a number of" (even though it's common to hear stuff like "OMG mah hayur is SOOOO bad i hate mah life) I know some teens whose lives really ARE a living hell right now, and it definitely isn't nonsense they're grieving about.

It's true that some people can make a big deal out of stuff, though. Those 'Kewl Paguz trooth" levels are a prime example, and people believe them sometimes.

You are right. I'd say 'most' and add an 'occasionally'. And no disrespect to those whose lives really are a living hell. But I think you know what I am hinting at. Me, past my thirties, am probably complaining about nonsense right now, my granddad would say if he were still here.

When i was talking about "we" i was really talking about the actual game.

but, i see what your talking about.

EDIT:
No, i'm against the rants, complaining and "stop them now" films...

my one is going to be different. To show the issues, but not necessarily complain about them, more to explain i guess.
its going to be a TV show FOR the community, not against it.

Wat.

I miss the old days of lbp1 too, where we wasn't afraid to blast from the shadows creating our own things for recognition, so you're right. But in my opinion, we went wrong by "feeding the trolls" as they say. By this i mean, there was alot of spammers, trolls and H4H levels going on, but with our natural " this wrong, why are you doing this" thinking, we'll play it and comment, feeding the trolls, hence keeping the troll alive to do more damage. A person i knew on PSN was like this on lbp, but she said how it was because of the 'recognition she was given from them made her wish to do more and more'.

A lot of people would like for it to stop but it will never stop...Never sorry i had to lol.

I joined lbp when the trolls started taking over so i dont know what its like with out them..Lbp 2 i got it on day one it was clean for a short time but then the trolls and the spamers started comeing over to lbp 2...I doubt it will ever change.

Well, I would say it couldn't change (much at least), but I remembered how Mm made a pretty big difference when they stripped the CP of spam levels. Some days are better than others to me. It's like exchange rates. Some (or most nowadays) days they SUCK, but others they're pretty darn good.
I just think a new part of the problem is all of this stupid drama going on between people. They make levels about each other, spam each other, and they all make a big deal out of it when it's just a game and some little kid with a keyboard on the other end. I'll be honest and say that it's pretty funny to watch sometimes, but it can get really annoying and sad. Like pathetic sad, not crying sad.

I don't like the term "troll". Players who are commonly labelled with the term seem to relish it too much, viewing it as a symbol of high status

I suggest "losers", "no-lifes" or "bed wetters" as an alternative.
