Moving layers

Archive: 7 posts

Hi everyone! I'm currently working in a small side project and I'm having some trouble with layers. Here are specific details for what I'm working on. https://lbpcentral.lbp-hub.com/index.php?t=73429-Time-distortion

Now the problem I'm having is that I was being dumb and forgot that a thin moving layer doesn't effect a thick moving layer or whatever layer is on top (theck and thack). I know that you can use sensors and such to adjust this for some things but I want a top down level and I can't get the character to move onto a platform and move with it. He just sits there and falls off and anything else i try overrides the controls. This is a crucial part of my level and was wondering if anyone had any ideas??

So there's a moving platform and you can't get the player to move with it? How is the platform moving? If it's linearly I have an idea how to solve this. It depends what your current setup for moving the character is as well, I'm going to guess it's an advanced mover linked to the analogue stick?

It's a case of getting the player to detect when they're on the platform, then adding an analogue signal to the advanced mover using a battery. If you need a better explanation just ask.

I thought of that but the way I thought of was a little complex and I'm tryin to keep it simple to save space. My original idea was to put a theck hologram on the platform and have a impact sensor on it activate a tag. Then a tag sensor to a advanced mover. that makes the player move with it. I haven't tried it out yet but I thought that might over ride the original advanced mover and screw up the controls. Plus I'd have to make 4 different tags and involve lots of logic that I'm trying to avoid. Plus I'd have to make a whole other set for the gameplay I'm designing because some platforms move fast until you slow time. So I would need different tags and advanced movers. Like I said a lot of logic for a simple effect. Did you have a simpler idea?

Not sure if mine is simpler as such, it would get around the conflicting advanced movers though. Place holo on the platforms as you said, and use impact sensors to trigger a signal. Wire the impact sensor into an and gate. Wire a battery into the other port of the and gate and then wire the and gate to an or gate (the other port of the or gate will be your standard controls i.e. analogue stick). Wire the or gate to the advanced mover and you're done! All you'll have to do then is calibrate the battery strength to the speed of the platform.

I have an idea using speed sensors but I've never really used them before so not sure how I'd go about making that work. How many different speeds will you have for the time shifting thing? All you'll have to do is increase the number of ports on the or gate and copy the impact sensor, battery and and gate multiple times, adjusting the battery strength.

You could get even fancier with a few direction combiners but this would just increase the complexity, not sure if it's necessary. Not sure if this will be too much logic, but i guess it's an option.

Wow that's a lot simpler then mine lol. Theres not going to be a lot of speeds or varying speeds. This sounds like it'll work a lot better then my idea lol. I'm gonna try it out soon. Thanks a lot!2012-08-24 18:56:00

I've been playing around with lots of top down ideas in the level I'm currently making, so I've had a lot of practice!

If you need further help feel free to add me on psn or message me on here. Let me know when you're levels done anywho, sounds like it'll be good!

Oh man, I believe Brucethejam did this exact thing on his Medieval Marble Madness (http://lbp.me/v/ehrx1p) level, but I couldn't say exactly how.2012-08-28 21:05:00
