Barrel shooting

Archive: 14 posts

i think it would be cool 2 make a barrel u jump in that shoots u out when u press a button like in the old donkey kong countries, i've tried to make a prototype but couldn't figure it out so if anyone wants 2 give it a shot be my guest 2009-01-10 23:45:00

Build your barrel. In the bottom of the barrel, place a platform that flippers out. Have it triggered by a mag key located at your ejection spot. Pretty easy I'd think

Make sure that when you glue the foreground "front" (or back) of your barrel that you don't glue it to the platform piece (or the piston won't work). This can be done by gluing away from the platform, then shaping with the point editor tool, or by extending your platform completely out of the barrel before gluing down.

If you want to be ejected when you press R1, instead of when your barrel passes a certain spot, in the bottom of your barrel on top of the platform place a piece of dissolve, which is grabbable. Instead of using a mag switch for the piston, use a grab switch on the disslove, and connect it to the piston and dissolve.

Alternatively you could have made the platform out of fabric, but then you'd still be holding onto it when it tries to shoot you out. Hence, use the dissolve.

It'd only be able to fire once.. unless that's what you want.. I like my stuff to be re-usable not just a one time deal.. unless that's what I was going for... :kz:

yeah i meant a reusable one, and the barrels on those games spun so it'd work better to make it shoot u when u release the grab button2009-01-11 02:19:00

Hmm.. make the bottom of the barrel out of sponge or something, and put a directional grab switch onto it, and attach that to the piston. Have the piston fully extended when you're not grabbing it, so when you grab it it pulls you in. Let go, and boom.. there you go.

Make sure the piston moves fast like set the time to like .5s-1s

Yes but how would you get inside the barrel if the piston is extended?

Set the piston up to be a flipper instead and set the grab switch to one shot.

you cant one shot a piston.

to get inside the barrel, you grab the top so it goes in, then let go to fire.. it's not complicated.. just explain in a magic mouth part like "Grab the top of the barrels, wait till you're inside, and let go to fire!".

Yes you can, you just have to set it to be a flipper first

Hexaghon did this in his level, "Timmy's Dream". I think you should ask him how he did it 2009-01-12 17:46:00

Hexaghon did this in his level, "Timmy's Dream". I think you should ask him how he did it I was about to say that. Hexaghon had a cannon that shot after a certain number of seconds in the cannon.

He'd be a good resource to explain how it was done.

Id assume it was on a delay switch (actually he explained this before) its a slanted L of darkmatter with an emitter at the top and a mag switch at the bottom to fire the cannon.

a prox switch in the cannon emitts a circle of something with a mag switch, it rolls down the L shape and hits the key - TA-DA

I would not use a grab switch to fire the piston. Players will tend to hold on, and then they won't come out of the barrel, or at least they might not come out in a predicatable manner.

A short range sensor switch would likely be better to prevent them holding on. Or a "button" at the base of the barrel which fires the cannon when the player presses it by falling on top of it.
