I know a lot of us are residents of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, so here is a thread for us and anyone else who wants to discuss this wonderful little group of countries floating somewhere off the coast of Afro-Eurasia. So...I was born in England and have lived here all my life, but I'm a bit Scottish so I would call myself British I'm from the West Midlands, my closest city is Birmingham. It's great Where in the UK does everyone else live?

is it possible to be "a bit" scottish? Never! =p (No points for guessing where I'm from) but then again... I've always based it on where individuals are born rather than their relatives. However somebody must have been born on a border at some point.

It most definatly is possible to be a bit scottish, both my parents have strong scottish blood (mum is scottish, dads dad was) therefore I am about 3 quaters scottish blooded. I still consider myself welsh though ;p

Ah good, we need a UK thread. Lets discuss all things British. We all love the Queen don't we? And have terrible teeth? And like horrible warm beer? And we all drink tea from little dainty tea cups? Who likes football, does anybody like football, like properly support a (UK based) team? I don't care what team, but it would be nice to know. I'm a Bolton fan, am a season ticket holder too. A once great empire, now reduced to the laughing stock of the rest of the world, who view us as fat, lazy and uneducated. Over the last decade our national identity and way of life have been irreparably diluted by political correctness, absurd health and safety regulations and equality/diversity ideals. We have become a cash cow to be milked, scammed and ripped off by the European union and foreign traders. British industry is pretty much non-existant since most of our homegrown manufacturers and retailers have now been absorbed/bought out by foreign companies or gone out of business completely. Immigration has spiralled out of control. Our legal system is badly broken, jailing old ladies who can't afford to pay their council tax, while letting violent criminals off with a slap on the wrist and relocating convicted pedophiles in homes with a nice view of the local primary school. The London riots stand as a pretty good indicator of where our younger generation's moral and social standards are at. And then along comes the olympics where we all wave our union jacks patriotically and conveniently forget that being British is really nothing to be proud of. Rule Britania indeed....what a frickin' joke.

The UK holidays start at around July 22 and end on September 2nd (I have an extra week off due to school improvement!). Do the US times have dates vaguely similiar to this?

I have no national pride, nor am I proud of where I come from. I'm an earthling and that's all I will acknowledge. I would ask if national pride is a good measuring stick for the English. It's a better measure for the Scots, Welsh, Cornish and Irish, perhaps. Another question to ruminate on is why London doesn't resemble a continental imperial city. I believe it's for much the same reason.

That might be the right one, I wouldn't be able to tell you either way. All I can remember is that we (Bolton) won 2-1 and it was in the 96/97 season when we were promoted from the old First Division as Champions.
