Blood of Dragons - Dungeon Crawling Action-Adventure

Archive: 8 posts

I spent a good month putting this one together. Let me shamelessly plug this level like an advertiser would.

*Ahem*

With your sword in hand, you scour through three landscapes entering perilous dungeons, solving puzzles and battling ferocious beasts in search of a wicked dragon child. The worlds are large and explorable at your leisure, filled with bonus collectables and even a few NPCs who spout one liners. Plenty of challenge as you crusade through a ravaged kingdom, an undead filled crypt, and even the belly of a gigantic dragon beast? It's all there.

It plays like an oldschool Zelda title or Gauntlet from the old eight-bit era. You move in any direction you choose and attack with a sword. You even have a timed explosive in your little sack hands to blow through fragile walls and even some enemies. It even has a little throw-away story, cutscenes and all. And it's frighteningly long as well.

So if you're interested, give it a go. Somebody has to beat my high score.

I just got done playing some of the level. A few things I suggest is one maybe zoom the camera out a bit more. At first I had no idea where I was or going. I just kinda hugged the walls and hoped that led me to the right place. Also add in more checkpoints. I only found 1 and t was a huge pain to be half way through the dungeon then die and have to go all the way back through. Maybe you could add a sprint mode? As I as exploring it got annoying moving so slow back through everything cause of a dead end. Lastly the enemies seemed to move backwards once they got near me. They would head right for me then just ten around and swing at nothing. The ones that threw things worked fine. They were the only real threat to me. I didn't play the whole thing and that was because of the checkpoints. I died a couple times and didn't like running all the way back through everything. Oh yea maybe a health bar?! I was real paranoid and counstantly counting when I got hit cause I had no idea how much health I had. Other than that I had a lot of fun! It was great replaying that old Zelda game style. I hope there's more to come like this.2012-08-20 14:02:00

Thank you very much for the feedback. I don't get nearly enough to know if my levels are any good or not.
I tried several things with the health bar, but none of it seemed to work for me. I figured it was just easier to know that if you're hit, you're hit and you'll want to wait a little before going back into battle. Like, you don't count how many hits you have, you count how long you were being hit and judge whether or not it's safe to go back into battle. Your health is sort of your own judgement. Health bars are not my specialty, sorry about that.

The level design is meant to be non-linear, so there's no clear indication as to where you have to go. Maybe that was a mistake- SOME direction is necessary, even in non-linear games. It's also why the checkpoints are few, you have infinite lives and the dungeons don't respawn, so to boost the challenge and provide a slight punishment for dying. Perhaps it's too tedious a punishment. I had no idea the character ran too slow, that's an easily fixed issue.

I'll try to work with this. Thank you very much for the feedback. It's incredibly helpful.

I don't think that it was to harsh of a punishment. I just felt that with the small things on top of it, it became a pain. And yes a little guidance is helpful. Even open world games like skyrim drop you off at a point and say you can do this or this and such. Can't wait to play again though. If you need help with health bars try looking at comphermc's tutorials. He has one great and easy health bar set up in there.

EDIT:
Just played it again and I had a lot of fun with it! The two headed dragon was a bit of a pain at first. That cannon wouldn't work then suddenly it stared blasting away.Dont have time to check out the other two levels but I will soon! Also could you please try out my level? It's a platformer beta for a huge upcoming project I'm working on. Thanks

Certainly. Glad to hear you had fun with it. The canon has a strange behavior and I don't think there's a way for me to fix it. Thanks for playing, I'd be glad to play your platforming project.2012-08-20 23:34:00
