Black Lights and Casting Shadows

Archive: 15 posts

Has anyone found a trick/glitch/object that can cast shadows instead of light? Visual effects I've tried with fog, holograms, glass, or gas emitters haven't worked so far. Let's say you want an obstacle that's just a moving shadow darkening everything in its path, or a multi-phase boss that needs a "black" light to show the phase. Does LBP2 have a way to create this? So far all my searches just turn up Sonic/Shadow levels haha2012-08-17 15:50:00

Sticker Panel?

Just cut out the required shape (For example a cone if using a spotlight) sticker it black, then set the opacity to very low. As long as it's in the front layer, everything behind it will go dark as if standing in shadow.

I wasn't sure what you meant until I looked up "sticker panel" and it was in some DLC I can't use without a special controller =(

I guess the best example of what I mean would be the global lighting tool which has a "light" and "dark" scale, except I'd need a version of the "dark" which is local and can be moved around like normal lights.

You can use sticker panel without the Move controller. Most people ended up buying the Move pack just for the sticker panel. Bit of a rip-off imo, but sticker panel is too good to go without.

I don't remember how you get the material, but if you need to play the levels, just join a friend who has the Move controller and is in a level. You can then get into the Move pack levels without actually owning the Move controller.

You get the Sticker Panel from a tutorial level, no controller or friend needed. Totally worth it imo, it's awesome! The possibilities it opens up are endless!

Failing that, rather than trying to make certain areas in your level dark, you could try making your entire level pitch black and highlighting the areas that aren't supposed to be in shadow? Sounds like a pain the bum to me though lol.

Thanks for the advice. I guess I'll have to wait until I have a few spare bucks for that pack. It wouldn't be the first time I buy a whole kit just for one tool or song =P Most other solutions don't work because the level I want it in most is a constantly-shifting maze of elements, and there are too many different kinds of visuals to make most "trick" approaches feasible.

So before this pack, there was nothing that comes close to this type of effect? I like the warping effect of some glass but it never gets the lighting right

I have a glitch object in my bag which is the "afterglow" of a regular light object that has been disconnected and re-attached to a piece of hologram, so it can be moved around freely in the level. Not sure if this is what you're looking for, but if you'd like a copy let me know - I've never sent anyone anything in game before, but I'm sure there's a way to to do it. Invisible glass casts a shadow with no visible source. I don't know how you make it/get it though. I just found some in my level by chance one day and saved it to my poppit. Very useful stuff...fully selectable, corner editable, etc, unlike "shrink n smeared" dark matter. The only down side is you can't change the physics to make it non-slip or soundless.2012-08-18 23:28:00

It really is quite fantastic. I took it off one of evret's objects, one of the most useful things I've ever done. I mainly use it to add shadows and collisions to sticker panel objects.

Thanks for the offer... I'm up to try anything =) I think you press square and there's a send option, but I've only ever done it with level keys. It sounds like this invisible glass has potential too... I'll have to search for some.

There are certain objects in the 'lights' section of the objects bag if you organize everything by category; a few special lights, which are default LBP2 objects. They act just like decorations, except theyre lights. In other words, they can be placed like decorations, but have an input and cast light and everything. And not only can they cast light, but they have a setting at the bottom that lets you make them invisible, so you can have invisible sources of light. Incredibly useful as is.
Perhaps you could make your level completely dark, and then make the only lighting out of these invisible light sources? Then you could simply wire a tag sensor to the light and set the light's input settings to "brightness", so that the closer the respective tag is to the tag sensor, the darker the light gets.

How do you just find it by chance in your level!? lol...

I found theck in my level, along with some glitched pink floaty that skyrocketed towards the ceiling. I imagine it's all just a by-product of certain circumstances. Started unintentional, then people found a way to reliably make it.

I don't know the story behind the glass, though I imagine it was just some accident someone took advantage of.
