Bob's Game

Has anyone seen the news on Bob's Game? Does everyone know what Bob's Game is?

Essentially, Bob was a guy who wanted to make a game by himself, so he did. He made a 15-20 hour RPG specifically for the DS, and when Nintendo wouldn't give him a development kit so he could finalize the game for retail release, he decided to lock himself in a room for 100 days in protest. After 30 days, he gave up the protest, trashed his room, and lost his faith in a benevolent, loving Nintendo that I'm not sure ever existed. They are trying to run a business, after all.

I am oversimplifying, but that is the gist of it. See news posts here (http://www.destructoid.com/bob-ends-100-day-protest-after-a-month-trashes-his-room-lies-on-floor-crying-117586.phtml)and here (http://kotaku.com/5128206/%5Bupdated%5D-bobs-protest--and-bobs-game--is-over)for a little more info.

People either feel sorry for him or don't, and I think I fall into the second category. Yes, he put an extraordinary amount of effort into something all by himself, but effort doesn't equal quality, and he has not handled the project with anything resembling maturity. Read the news posts on his official site (http://www.bobsgame.com/) (you have to scroll down quite a bit) - these posts and the protest itself both show a person with little perspective, and with little idea of how the game industry works. He seems to think that releasing his game via unofficial means onto flash carts or something else could significantly damage Nintendo's profits - he acts like he's sitting on an atom bomb when in reality he looks to have (yet another) conventional RPG, and one that could have been released 15 years ago on the Super Nintendo. Put yourselves in the shoes of a major corporation - would you have given him a development kit for your system? A little maturity and professionalism would have gone a long way here.

I think LBP and games like it could one day pave the way to a future where one person can sit down and make a game for public consumption. Does anyone have any other thoughts?

It says on the website they didn't give it to him because he was the only person working on the game, which has never happened before. Stupid reason, but I can see the thinking behind it. Imo, he's handling it badly, but he really should have gotten the kit in the first place.2009-01-10 23:55:00

You have to take into consideration he wasted 5 YEARS on a game that, in the end, won't happen. But I don't see WHY he needs to publish it on the DS. I'm sure Sony and MS would gladly take it and make it downloadable on PSN and XBLA. Or hell, just release it for free on the internet. Indy games, especially games made by ONE person, shouldn't be made for money.

I mean, if you make something and want money for it, sure, fine. But you've got to let people decide whether they want to play your game - you've got to create "demand" for your "supply." He wasn't giving out demos or press copies of the game or anything on the grounds that he didn't want to "spoil" anything, so how are we to decide whether the game was actually worthy of release or not?

He took a big risk on something, and sadly when you take a risk it's worth noting that there is a chance you might fail. He's clearly a Nintendo devotee, hence his desire to put the game specifically on the DS, but he really should have had a backup plan all along, and this stunt isn't going to make anyone want to work with him.

I guess he was really going for internet advertising, but I haven't actually heard of the game until now, and honestly, I want it.

Yeah im a fan of Bob , is game looks cool , the music is awesome and if Yuu read the description for the characters of is game and the dialogue Yuu will realise that it might not be what Yuu initialy thought it was. Im part of the interdimentional bob's game championship and you havent seen the game yet. Yuu might also already be playing and Yuu are not even aware of it.2009-01-15 06:27:00

SOMEONE CAME INTO MY HOUSE
THEY CAME INTO MY HOUSE!!!
THEY WENT THROUGH EVERYTHING, WENT THROUGH MY PC, FILE TIMESTAMPS CHANGED, FOOTPRINTS, EVERYTHING MOVED, DOOR UNLOCKED
THEY TRIED TO OPEN THE SAFE
MY PC IS KEYLOGGED
12 HOURS OF CAMERA FOOTAGE WAS DELETED
CAMERA WAS UNPLUGGED WHEN I WOKE UP
I WAS SLEEPING!!
THEY DID IT WHILE I WAS SLEEPING!!
THIS IS NOT PART OF THE PLAN
THIS IS NOT A JOKE
THEY MADE HANAFUDA CARDS FOR 50 YEARS
THAT IS A YAKUZA GAME
THEY ARE THE JAPANESE MAFIA
THEY ARE THE JAPANESE MAFIA
THEY ARE THE JAPANESE MAFIA
THEY ARE THE JAPANESE MAFIA
THEY ARE THE JAPANESE MAFIA
THINK ABOUT IT!!
THEY WANT TO SILENCE ME
FOR A REASON!
IT'S EITHER THEM OR ALIENS
I'M PRETTY SURE IT'S NOT ALIENS
I'D RATHER IT BE ALIENS !"

yeaaaah... he is a little wacko, maybe he should transfer to LBP on the PS3 so he can actually publish what ever his creative juices tell him to do (wait that might be a bad idea because he seems kinda wacko)

Cheers!

I'm reviving this because the demo is out now. http://www.bobsgame.com/

I think the complexity of the game is just pretty funny. You even have a bodily waste status. lol @ "just went".
This game is pretty cool. Hope it's released as freeware.
