I need help getting back to Creating.

Archive: 8 posts

Hello.

Most of you may not know me, but I need help getting back to Creating Things.

I've been trying very hard lately to make a visually-pleasing, fun, and satisfying level, but it feels like I can't do it. I've tried and tried and tried, but something always happens either inside me or something gets my attention, and I never complete what I want to Create. It's sad that I want to Create something, but I try and fail, or even procrastinate.

Any advice so that I can make a good level?

One cannot simply explain someone how to create, really. I used to be bad at creating as well. What I did was play a lot of intricate MM picks and see how they created it, played with friends and participated in community creating events. But there are people who can help you. You know, after this thread was made (a month, no less), I started a group level. It's very satisfying that I can finally say I've made a GOOD level. This helps me learn how to make levels that people want.

I've created in LBP2 for 2 years (ever since the BETA, so I had a headstart). I took a big break from creating at the time this thread was made, and then I wanted to get back to creating. Now I'm making a group level and it's turning out great!

That's good to hear.

Anyway, I'm not sure exactly how to explain this, but there's a way to sorta sense the 'perfect look' for a level. First you have to decide the theme, and then create the base of the level. Then you zoom out the camera and you 'see' how it would look. It's hard to explain, but I've pulled it off many times.

If this doesn't come naturally, it's a good idea to just improvise at the beginning. Just do whatever seems right. You can come back and edit it later, it's just to have the looks and the layout figured out right from the beginning.

If you're wanting some fun gameplay, then sketch some obstacles on a bit of paper. Remember to label it. Create it later, and experiment with different obstacle types to see which work and which don't.

Hope this helps.

For me I find that sketching really helps. When I have ideas I draw them to visualise how they're going to look, they can be as crude or intricate as you wish. Once I know what features I want in my level I start to plan out how they fit together, get an overall level plan if you will. This way I know exactly what I'm working towards, I find freestyling is good for the finer details, but not for the big picture. It helps me manage the thermo better knowing exactly how much I need for what. For a level I'm working on at the minute I drew up an actual walk through map, as there are five main areas in which you move around and continually revisit when you have new power ups, so this mockup helped me to ensure a path that worked and how to make it as easy as possible to navigate for the player.

All in all, if you're just going into create more with a blank canvas and that's not working for you, try to make some sketches before even turning the PS3 on. =)
