STAR WARS: The Empire Strikes Back: Hoth: Err...Etc! (Special Edition)

Archive: 32 posts

Hey all,

Just published my latest, a three parter designed as one level, but published separately due to borked links.

http://lbp.me/v/dw1he-

Was a pretty big challenge to build, vehicles and mechanics are not my strong point but happy to FINALLY get a level out there with some lightsabre action! Hope you play and enjoy.

Managed an early sneak peek at this last night and WOW it was fantastic. So much goodness all over the place. Tons of varying gameplay, incredible cutscenes , scenery and effects. Absolutely the best Julesy has ever done and dare I say one of the best levels ever made. Bravo!!!2012-08-16 15:12:00

Oh cool!

I had an old 63 Hoff back in the day. My Grandpa gave it to me when I got my license for working on the farm. Ran pretty cool until the transmission went out. Those were some fun times for sure.

..wait, a level? Well.. count me in! Queued!!

Totally cool, man!

I played all 3 last night, and plan on playing them several times again today now that I did my practice run.

Playing these was a real treat. I had great memories of the original, as it was the first Star Wars level I played from you. (I remember thinking "oh great, another scenic but boring Star Wars level....", then going into it and thinking "how did I miss this series so far???? This is GREAT!). Needless to say, I've been waiting for each successive level ever since with baited breath.

But, obviously, these levels are soooo much more! The light saber mechanics works great, the gameplay is challenging and exciting, the humor is - once again - top notch.

One thing that took me a bit to figure out was the grapple-hook-gun part. I didn't realize there was a place to grab in the ship to shoot a grapple hook so I wandered in that area for a while. But, once I figured it out it was really satisfying.

Kudos to the arcade segment. Fantastic! I enjoy a good strategic battle versus bullet hell. I felt like each time I got hit, I deserved it.

Anyway, glad you finally got these done. It was worth the wait.

Thanks for the comments all, appreciated. A few bugs and gripes have surfaced, some I've tweaked, some have left me scratching my head. The tauntaun handling is annoying some, and the more obtuse solutions (like the grapplegun and the bounce in the dark in Part 3) are frustrating others so a couple of visual hints might be in order.2012-08-17 15:19:00

People complaining about boring platformers should appreciate the different types of game play found here!

I think I broke Part 1 (sent a PSN message - no creature to fight?)...I'll have to try again. Needless to say I appreciated and made good use of the individually published levels!

I loved Part 2...the tauntaun cracked me up, he's so goofy. I didn't have too much trouble with the controls except for one part where he's on ice. Also figured out the grapple right away...but that's probably because I was hoping I could use the vehicle and started grabbing stuff.

Got absolutely no where in Part 3. Right at the beginning you go left on a couple of bounce pads and need to land in a pitch black part of the screen and make a jump to the power thingy. Maybe it's my tv?but I could see absolutely nothing (saber glow didn?t help) so after failing a dozen times I decided to quit. If that?s the dark section you are talking about please add a light. You?re levels are so amazing it's sad when silly things like this prevent people (me) from being able to appreciate fully what you?ve accomplished.

Anyway, even though I couldn?t finish?it's still awesome, so congrats!

Weird - when I played it, the light saber lit up the dark area well.

That's annoying if the sabre isn't lighting up enough on some tvs. I add a light and that section is a bit redundant. I'll try and bung in a few extra spots that are triggered by the sabre, that might solve it.

Anybody had issues with the links?

Now I'm not sure I actually kept the saber held down for the last bounce pad (didn't occur to me)...I was trying to land blind and then turn on the saber...so I can't 100% say it doesn't provide enough light to land safely. The few times I did manage to hit the platform I either slipped off or blew the jump, pretty much my fault. I'll retry this again as well.

The only level link I was able to use from 2 to 3 worked fine...

Yeh, the idea is to use it as a torch, but adding a few extra triggered glints of light won't hurt either way. Btw, there's not that much more after that, the battle scene following it is a huge thermo hit, and the general plan was to keep the big set pieces short and snappy to keep the overall running time down. Now they're separate, Pt 3 probably feels a little short if you come in fresh but hey ho. Links shminks.2012-08-17 18:19:00

Hate to tell you this.... but I think part 3 is broken. After destroying the first big dude, it just sits forever and the next guy doesn't show up. I've tried it twice.

edit: I played it a third time and it worked... I'm going to play it a few more times this afternoon and see if there's a specific way to break it. The other 2 times I beat it pretty quickly - I don't know if this had anything to do with it.

EDIT AGAIN: Ok, Jules - I figured out what's happening.

On part 3 - the first big dude you have to take down - If you kill him too quickly, the smaller next dude never appears, so the game never ends. It looks like the smaller guy is supposed to emit where the bigger guy dies, so he never appears.

You could probably fix this by having a perm switch activate the emitter. Set the emitter to emit 1 only, but use an ON switch instead of a emit once setting. This way the emitter keeps trying to emit until it works. Either that or prevent the big dude from dying until he moves far enough to the left to allow the smaller dude to emit.

Ah, so that's what is supposed to happen after the AT-AT...I tried twice and couldn't figure out what to do next. AT-ATs and AT-STs are awesome btw.

Saber does give plenty of light in first part when you just keep it drawn the whole time, doh!

I Just played all three of Hoth levels and I had a blast. These levels have great snowy visuals thanks excellent layer glitch, superb use of icicle decorations, well-made sackbots, and detailed vehicles (even Tauntaun ). The use of lightsaber adds more fun to all three parts thanks to the power of the force. Part 1 has amazing Wampa chases and nice opening where players have to shake their controller in order to get Luke out of the snow ceiling. Part 2 has impressive platforming gameplay, imperial droid boss battles, and Tauntaun ride. Part 3 has a tricky yet satisfying platformer, and it features a great snowspeeder ride. I did encounter a bug in part two, though. After I destroyed the last Imperial Droid, the electric debris didn't disappear. This happened twice, but the third time was a success. Still, great job on another exciting chapter of your Star Wars levels. Looking forward to the next one.
VISUALS: 5/5
SOUND: 5/5
GAMEPLAY: 5/5
OVERALL: A yay and heart on all three, and positive review on part 3

That worked Cubb, thanks for your know how!

Justin, I went in and tried to recreate that bug and had no luck, but tweaked the triggers anyway. If you have any inkling about what you did differently those two times, that'd be grand. Thanks for your comments!

mind=blown. Wow, I think these are the best in the series yet. So many little details and gameplay elements, it's just unbelievable. I had a blast playing through parts 1 and 2 but when it came time to head into part 3, the level link broke. It just sat there for a long, long time with nothing happening. I played on twitter for a few minutes, took a tech support call from my mom, all while waiting for the level to load, but it never did. I picked up the controller and was able to open my popit. It wouldn't let me "Pop" so I tried to restart the level but the "restart level" and "return to Pod" options wasn't selectable. The only thing I could do was hold down the PS button and quit the game and restart. So now I'm in part 3 but lost all my points. Still. Awesome series and I am loving the heck out of it.

EDIT: Just finished part 3 with no problems, other than player error. Amazing work. I love the Star Wars logo for the respawn point. awesome work Jules.

Wow, so you make allowances for broken level links and they don't even break properly.

Is that normal? I've never had a level link break on me so I'm stabbing in the dark with this.

Great level though very hard for those of us who suck at quick platforming. I love the humor you add to your levels as well as all the detail. The Chase in the caves was real exciting although hard.

Only bug i could find was where you break through the side of the cave to freedom on the wompa or whatever its called. If you press R1 (or was it L1 i don't remember) like i did thinking you had to break the ice yourself then it kills you.
Other than that it played fine.

I couldn't finish the third level as i had to log off but will be back to it soon as i can't wait to see what comes next.
Your definitely the master of Star Wars in LBP.

@bio - I've done away with all the links and scoreboarded all three now, bit of a shame as I probably would have balanced the pacing a little differently between the three. I'm not really sure why the links are so unstable with these three, much more so than the others I've published according to the feedback I've got (2/3rds of playtesters got a broken link).

@Lord - Tweaked the cave exit to make things a little clearer there, thanks for the feedback.

Sounds cool, I'll have to cue it. I love levels with vehicles. Actually, I don't know if I have any levels without vehicles (or some mode of controlable conveyance) in them.

One of the next things I want to work on is a chicken-leg mech, so I'm curious to see your walkers in motion. (but mine will have to wait behind all the currently unfinished winged and wheeled projects currently cluttering my moon.)

A conversation on a different forum saw me loading up LBP 2 for the first time in probably a year.

Figured the best place to find out what levels were worth playing would be right here. Sure enough, right at the top of the Spotlight list was this level.

I've only played the first part but to say I was blown away would be an understatement. I ever made levels at the cutting edge in LBP 1. They were usually cute and funny platformers with the odd obstacle you might never have seen before. It's safe to say then that having only ever dabbled with the LBP 2 creator about a year ago that I'm not exactly the best placed to determine what makes a good level or how much work has gone into it.

However there has clearly been an enormous amount of time and effort spent on this. Taking away the technical aspect entirely, the creative design here is superb. The drips landing on the platforms and forming the spikes had me 'Wow'-ing out loud, the Wampa had me laughing and actually on the edge of my seat.

I've always felt this series was the best on LBP and while I'm no expert on what is available these days I think it would take something special to get me to change my mind.

I'm not even going to bother mentioning how good this level is because it's something every (sane/normal/competent [CHOOSE ONE]) player knows. My only issue was with the creature section that felt a bit too tight and slippery and a glitch after you fight the droids that resulted in me being stuck.2012-09-09 17:44:00

Oi oi stranger! Im chuffed you booted up and played it Matt, thanks a lot for stopping by and posting. Can you believe I'm still doing these??!! Anyway, go play some of my hearted, theres plenty more epic out there.

Cheers Bonner, i think both of those issues have been sorted - I saw your ingame comment about the Tauntaun early on and loosened up the tight spots in that cave section.

Haha I'm glad you are still doing them, mate. I get nostalgic thinking back to when the series first started.

I'll get a look at your hearted. Though I tend to find the LBP 2's system pretty confusing for exploring other people's moons etc. Might get used to it over time right enough. I can get them of you LBP.me though so I'll get through your hearted list there.

Boy, they'll let just about any riff-raff in here, won't they?

Now, Matt - go back and play the other Julesy Star Wars levels in LBP2. It's worth it.

'Scuse the bump on this, but Pt Two (with the Tauntaun) broke with a recent update, so I went back and played it and was like 'umm, did I really make the Tauntaun this floaty??', so took the breakage as an opportunity to rework the Taun (thanks to Just_Crusader on that), changed a few bits here and there and took advantage of some new visual gubbins. Is unlocked if anyones interested...!
