What does sync do?

Archive: 5 posts

I have always wanted to know what a sync is for on an emitter and if someone could explain it to me in detail I would really appreciate it.2012-08-15 13:29:00

Sync is used to offset the emission times.

Say you have 10 identical emitters, that emit once every second.

If their sync value is the same among them, they will all emit at the same time.

However, if one of them has a sync value of 0.5, it will emit out of sequence with the others, by an offset of 0.5 seconds.

In LBP 1, there were some moving platforms that created a sine-wave effect. That was achieved by using sync values, so each piston moved slightly before the one ahead of it, and the next piston along moved even more slightly before that one.

Good explanation. Sync does apply to other logic besides Emitters (pistons, winches, etc) but it works the same way for everything.
I'd like to mention that Sync is not 100% accurate - at least if you have a lot going on in a level. If you need absolutely precise timing, use a Sequencer.

I've always known what the Sync was but is there a radius on it? For instance, if i have a set of ten pistons all synced and I have another set of pistons synced a little further along, would that effect the first set?2012-08-16 20:34:00

There is no radius for Sync, it's level wide.2012-08-17 20:58:00
