News Of The Day And Rumours thread

Archive: 187 posts

I just thought it would be a good idea to have a general thread for all those little news snippets and rumours that don't quite cut it for a thread of their own. Hope people support it. I'll kick it off with this juicy little snippet:

BioShock Infinite Art Director Joins Naughty Dog

Former Irrational Games art director Nate Wells announced he is joining Naughty Dog, the team behind the upcoming PlayStation 3 exclusive title The Last of Us. “I’m taking my talents to South Beach. Wait. I mean Naughty Dog and The Last of Us. Can’t wait," Wells said on Twitter.

Last week it was revealed Scott Sinclair of Irrational Games would take Wells' position. Irrational also hired Rod Fergusson, formally the director of production for Epic Games.

Both The Last of Us and BioShock Infinite are scheduled for release next year.

Nope, half right, but I wish you weren't. They're showing a LOT of the Wonderbook like they did in E3. It's cringe worthy.

In a statement to Joystiq today, Nintendo offered more insight into its plan to distribute new 3DS and Wii U games digitally in addition to retail. It won't just be select games like New Super Mario Bros. 2; according to the publisher, "The majority of Nintendo-published Nintendo 3DS games will have the same dual-distribution strategy. Likewise, the majority of Nintendo-published Wii U games will be available both as packaged products and as digital downloads starting on launch day."

The statement also describes the retail availability of codes for these digital games, which are described as "16-digit codes" for the "Nintendo eShop." So the Wii U's store is going to be called the eShop, just like the 3DS's, and use the same kind of codes. Between a unified store branding, availability of redeemable codes, and digital sales of full games, it looks like Nintendo is finally moving in the right direction in terms of the internet.

Now if it would only let you redeem those games to an account instead of a single 3DS. During last night's presentation, Satoru Iwata said that the new downloadable 3DS retail games "will be stored in the consumer's SD memory card and be playable only with the hardware to which it was downloaded so that, unlike how you can share the packaged software which are stored in game card format, the consumer cannot share the software with other Nintendo 3DS systems owned by other members of the family or friends." In other words, they'll operate just like eShop games operate now.

Prepare for a bigger push on downloadable games.

There's a good chance Sony's Liverpool Studio (Motorstorm, WipEout) has been shut down, and all future projects have been cancelled.

It's being reported that Sony has closed its Liverpool studio, the team behind the WipEout games.

The news broke on the GRCade forum, where a contributor called Shadow said Sony had closed the studio and all projects have been cancelled.

In a subsequent post, Shadow wrote, "They got rounded up this morning and Michael Denny [Senior Vice President of Sony Computer Entertainment Worldwide Studios] explained the company was being 'reorganised'".

No official statement has yet been put out. But reports seem to be authentic with Sony Liverpool developer Sandy Lobban tweeting: "End of an era today for Studio Liverpool. Honoured to have been a part of it."

The studio started life as Psygnosis in 1984, and quickly established itself as a cornerstone of the British games industry, producing and publishing games such as Barbarian and Lemmings. Sony bought the studio in 1993, rebranding it in the process as Sony Liverpool. They went on to achieve great success with the WipEout games, as well as Motorstorm, Formula 1 and WRC.

Its last title was WipEout 2048 on PS Vita.

Considering Studio Liverpool has been around for almost thirty years, and has been under Sony domain for over ten years, I think it gets the benefit of the doubt here. Besides, I'm sure someone would've made a thread out of this news anyway. Distributing the information to a thread like this seems to be a more ethical way in the long run.

"As part of SCE Worldwide Studios, we do regular reviews to ensure that the resources we have can create and produce high quality, innovative and commercially viable projects in an increasingly competitive market place. As part of this process, we have reviewed and assessed all current and planned projects for the short and medium term and have decided to make some changes to our European Studios.

"It has been decided that Liverpool Studio should be closed. Liverpool Studio has been an important part of SCE Worldwide Studios since the outset of PlayStation, and have contributed greatly to PlayStation over the years. Everyone connected with Liverpool Studio, past and present, can be very proud of their achievements.

"However, it was felt that by focusing our investment plans on other Studios that are currently working on exciting new projects, we would be in a stronger position to offer the best possible content for our consumers.

"Our Liverpool Facility will continue to operate, housing a number of other vital WWS!E and SCEE Departments.

"This should not take anything away from the great work WWS are doing and the incredible games and services that we have made, and continue to make, both for this coming year and further in the future."

I hate to be mean here, but if that's all Wonderbook has to offer, then that's pretty unimpressive. I'm not really sure how it was with EyePet, but this looks like a simple gimmick that might be fun for small children for two minutes, and then it ends up in the bargain bin pile of dusty shovelware-sorta games. Don't get me wrong, I like how they're experimenting with the technology to read things better, like the 3DS has with AR cards, and this has here, and well you know, motion controllers, Kinect, and even the Wii U with it's own way of reading things.

But I'm baffled Sony would use so much time from their conferences to direct their attention to, well.. this. :F

Sony Player Studio Turns Gamers Into Developers

Sony video games are getting a little more interactive, with today's announcement of Player Studio, a program that allows players to create in-game items to be sold in the Sony marketplace.

Player Studio invited gamers to download sample geometry for actual in-game objects, then learn how to develop, design, and personalize their own content.

Name your creations, provide a description for each item, and explain how it fits into the particular game's ongoing narrative storyline for possible inclusion in the marketplace, Sony Online Entertainment (SOE) said.

"For the first time in SOE history, players will be able to build and sell their own items, truly creating a unique, customizable online marketplace within our games," SOE president John Smedley said in a statement.

Those developers who earn a place in the SOE store will retain 40 percent of the net amount received from the item's sales.

"At SOE, we believe everyone is a gamer at heart, and our goal with Player Studio is to provide a platform on which our players can further explore their inner gamer while showcasing their passion for the games they love," Smedley said. "We are looking forward to seeing our players' creativity come to life in an entirely new way."

Meanwhile, the game maker also introduced two additions to its long-running EverQuest franchise, with expansions for EverQuest: Rain of Fear and EverQuest II: Chains of Eternity. Well into its 14th year of continuous development, EverQuest's ongoing story will provide some new twists with the upcoming updates.

Rain of Fear will offer players new content, including character customization, in-game items, and a max level of 100, according to Sony.

"Following two very successful transitions to free-to-play, we knew it was time to give our EverQuest community a rich offering of new content," Dave Georgeson, executive director of the game franchise, said in a statement.

Additionally, Chains of Eternity, the ninth expansion of the EverQuest II game, will offer level increases, prestige abilities, adornments that gain power, and a new level cap of 95. The expansion also includes two spirit-realm versions of overland zones, as well as new dungeons, SOE said. Never-before-seen in-game items will be debuted, and only available with the expansion pack.

Georgeson said the new expansions are proof of the EverQuest team's continued commitment, "and we have no plans of slowing down anytime soon," he said.

The two expansions will launch following SOE Live – Sony's annual player celebration in Los Vegas from Oct. 18-21.

'Evolving every day' - Sony's approach to working with indies

Sony has earned a reputation for funding daring indie games -- especially lately. Dyad and Papo & Yo, in particular, have picked up plaudits in recent weeks. Of course, this is not an accident, says Sony's Adam Boyes.

Boyes is the vice president of publisher and developer relations for SCEA. Installed in his job for around four months, he's heading up the company's push to find indies -- and fund them -- via its Pub Fund initiative.

While that's not the only part of his job, which also includes overseeing relationships with the U.S. triple-A publishing industry and external developers of all sizes around the globe, Boyes considers indies an important part of the Sony landscape.

"We’re always looking for things that people wouldn’t be able to do normally. Like, really art-house stuff," says Boyes. "We really want to feature them, and have an artful platform for people to put content out on."

As a gamer, he says, "I’m fine with paying $10, $15, $20 for something and realizing the creator has put their heart and soul into something." That, essentially, is what Boyes looks for.

"If it’s awesome, that’s sort of the first qualifier," he says. "If it’s something that really sets itself apart from what else is out there," that "always stacks higher."

How it Works

Once Sony gets interested in a game -- which could be all-new, or could have appeared on other platforms before, though that isn't as attractive to the Pub Fund team -- the first step is to get the developer licensed by Sony. Unlike with Xbox Live Arcade, licensed indie developers can self-publish on Sony platforms.

Rather than a publishing relationship, "Pub Fund is more of an incentive," says Boyes. "It’s kind of like a grant to get people that are interested in getting on the platform." Sony does not function as a publisher in the Pub Fund scenario; it simply funds the projects Boyes and his team believe in.

"So, we find a developer, we find a project, they pitch it to us, we say, 'Hey, we like it.' And then we pay them upon completion, advanced against the royalties," says Boyes.

Developers, in fact, are responsible for securing their own funding until the project is completed. Sony pays when the master version of the game is submitted.

"Why we really like the model [is] because, basically, once we recoup, we go to the traditional model that they would be getting with their self-publishing," says Boyes. He notes that since it's not a publishing model, Sony does not make any claims on developers' IP, either.

The Financing Question

Of course, since Sony doesn't pay until completion, developers are responsible for their own funding up to that point. "I’ve heard stories of teams taking that to, basically, the local banks, and getting that money advanced against that," says Boyes.

The company is also willing to work with developers who got going with Kickstarter -- "if a game gets Kickstartered, chances are people are excited about it," says Boyes -- or who self-funded their whole project but just need help at the end. "As a matter of fact, I had a meeting this morning where there was a team of guys that had self-funded for two years," he says.

Boyes was frank about what sort of funding developers might expect from the company. "What we usually say is $500,000, U.S., is sort of the ceiling. We have the ability to go over, but really that’s the top one."

But the company, he says, is "hands-off" during development. "We see a concept, we believe in the developer, and then basically we check in once in a while, but there’s no heavy, hands-on interaction with them. It allows them to take their own journey," he says. There are no deadlines set by Sony, either, as it pays upon completion.

What Sony Does

Sony will also work with Pub Fund developers to get them dev kits. "Our group works very closely with them to make sure they get all the stuff that they need," he says. It's worth noting also, that while Pub Fund is an SCEA initiative run out of California, Boyes' team works with developers around the globe, including the UK's Hello Games (Joe Danger).

Sony also worked on co-marketing with Canada's ][ Games on Dyad, inviting Shawn McGrath to repeatedly post to Sony's official blog. The game was also mentioned at Sony's E3 press conference, Boyes notes.

"We try to make the whole entire pathway easy for them and support [Pub Fund developers] in any way we can," says Boyes. "...there’s a myriad of things that we bring to the table to make it just more than a game on the platform, and really feature it."

Boyes recently instituted a policy that waives patch fees for Pub Fund developers, recognizing that indies don't have the deep pockets of major publishers. "I think you guys will see a lot of really exciting announcements over the coming six months about different evolving policies that make things easier for our partners. Self-publishing was step one. Then waiving patch fees for our Pub Fund partners," says Boyes.

"It’s important to us because developers are the gas in the engine, and that’s the important part we need to focus on: make their lives easier. Because, like I said before, there’s a lot of options these days, and we need to make sure that we’re evolving every day."

This is going to be a hard sell for Nintendo. Sony could easily release a PS3/Vita bundle for around the same price as the Premium bundle. This is going interesting to watch

Wii U out on December 8 in Japan

System to come in two bundles, priced at 26,250 ($338) and 31,500 ($405) yen respectively.

Nintendo has finally revealed the price and release date of the Wii U in Japan during a recent live stream presentation on September 13. Details for the rest of the world are expected to be disclosed at Nintendo events being held in the US and Europe in the next few hours.
The Wii U will be out this December together with New Super Mario Bros. U and NintendoLand.

The Wii U will be out this December together with New Super Mario Bros. U and NintendoLand.

The upcoming system will be out in Japan on December 8 this year. There will be two bundles on sale with two different prices. The basic bundle will cost 26,250 yen ($338) and contains a white Wii U with 8GB memory. The premium bundle will cost 31,500 yen ($405) and contains a black Wii U, a Wii U gamepad charging dock and stand, a Wii U console stand, and 32GB memory. Both bundles come with a Wii U gamepad, a Wii U AC adaptor, an HDMI cable and a Wii U gamepad stylus.

The Wii U gamepad will cost gamers 13,440 yen ($173) if purchased separately. The Wii Pro controller will cost gamers 5,040 yen ($65). Wii accessories will not be available with the aforementioned bundles; customers will have to buy the Wii remote, nunchuk and sensor bar separately.

New Super Mario Bros. U and NintendoLand will both be launch titles for the Wii U; the former will cost 5,985 yen ($77) while the latter will cost 4,985 yen ($64). Nintendo also announced a Nintendo Network Premium plan where it provides points for game and software purchases, with a 10 percent points return for digital purchases. The program will run until December 2014.

According to Nintendo president Satoru Iwata, the system will support full HD 1080p resolution and has 2GB memory; 1GB will be used for running games while the other 1GB is for running the system's operating system. The game discs for the Wii U will contain up to 25GB, with the device will be able to read up to 22.5mb per second.

This story will be updated shortly with the North American and European release dates and prices. Nintendo's software announcements for the Wii U will start on September 13 at 11pm JST (7am PST). For more information on the Wii U and its stable of games, check out GameSpot's coverage on the device.

New 12GB PS3 coming?

A German online retailer confirmed via Facebook that in October a new PS3 with 12GB of flash memory will appear. More information on the console has not been provided. It was speculated long ago that Sony would release a new version of the PS3. Sources are indicating that this PS3 will possibly have an even smaller box than the PS Slim, meaning a new ultra-slimline design is on the way. We're also expecting a hike in price, although no figures are available.

Sony's German PR chief Guido Alt commented that he knew nothing of the existence of such a console, when questioned by Gamereactor. But with Tokyo Game Show just around the corner, and with Sony holding a press conference next Wednesday, we'll likely know more in the very near future.

Update: Other sources based in the Nordic region tell us that units are already being stocked and that the new hardware could go on sale as soon as in two weeks and rather than a lowered price Sony could marginally be raising the price even if it's likely to remain around the same level.

PlayStation Mobile SDK Will Cost $99

The Tokyo Game Show is underway currently in Japan and Sony has just finished up their press conference with quite a few announcements! While the big bomb droppers were the announcements of the redesigned PS3 (which looks like the inside of a grill this time!) and the new PlayStation Vita colors for Japan, there was some important news for indie developers looking to put their games on the PlayStation Mobile service.

Sony stated that the Playstation Mobile SDK will be rolling out to all developers in November for $99.99, which is right on par with with other SDKs such as Apple’s iOS. If you’re not familiar with the many releases already coming to Playstation Mobile such as Passing Time, Mecho Wars: Desert Ashes, and Eufloria, then you may be confused as to why so many developers have already jumped on the bandwagon just a month out from its first announcement.

PlayStation Mobile, formerly known as PlayStation Suite, is a software framework that that will be used not only to provide download games on PlayStation certified equipment, but many other devices that can run Android 2.3 or higher as well. HTC, Asus, Sharp, and Fujitsu have already announced that they will be joining the Playstation Mobile program.

With Android missing out on so many high-quality mobile games that iOS seems to always snag up, I can’t help but think that this is a very Smart move on Sony’s part. If you’re a developer and you’d like your game on the PlayStation certified service, the entry fee will be a Franklin when it launches to public developers in November. In the mean time, gamers will be able to experience PlayStation Mobile October 3rd.

Microsoft has launched a new Xbox LIVE Rewards scheme entitling players who have passed certain Gamerscore milestones to additional discounts on Xbox LIVE Marketplace.
If you've unlocked between 3,000-9,999 Gamerscore on your Xbox LIVE profile, you'll be sent a "Special Gift" on your birthday. Don't get too excited, though: according to Microsoft, the gift only holds a value of 15p.
However, if you've earned between 10,000-24,999 Gamerscore, you'll receive both the birthday gift and be entitled to a 1% rebate on all purchases from Xbox LIVE Marketplace every month.
Players who have unlocked 25,000+ Gamerscore, meanwhile, will earn a 2% rebate on all purchases every month and the birthday gift.
To sign up for the offer, you simply need to activate the Xbox LIVE Rewards scheme (http://rewards.xbox.com/myachievements/) on your Xbox LIVE Gold account.
Most Xbox LIVE Marketplace purchases qualify for the rebate, including Games on Demand, Arcade Games, Game Add-ons and Avatar items, but purchases of Microsoft Points or Xbox LIVE memberships are excluded.
Players can also earn free Microsoft Points by taking part in surveys and buying items on Xbox LIVE Marketplace.

On the 2% tier its $1 back for every $50 spent which might cover an avatar item or indie game. It's not much but it is an improvement on getting 0% back.2012-09-28 20:17:00

I've mentioned this elsewhere on this forum, but what if our LBP levels could be streamed to mobile devices and laptops?

Gaikai Teases Uncharted, Mass Effect, God of War, Killzone, Modern Warfare, and More on Their Cloud Platform
Google+

October 10, 2012 Written by Sebastian Moss

While Sony’s acquisition of Gaikai was a huge move in the games industry, no one knew just how much support the cloud gaming platform would get from their new parent company, and when. Now, we’ve spotted a bunch of teases by the company at the level of games they’ll be streaming – and some pretty big names are included.

While earlier rumors by some sites claimed that only PS2 games would initially be streamed, or only PC-compatible games, the following images (taken from Gaikai’s redesigned site) show otherwise. In the pictures below, we can see Mass Effect 3, Killzone 2/3, Metal Gear Rising, Modern Warfare, Uncharted 2, inFamous 2 and LittleBigPlanet, as well as the PS2 games God of War 2 and Killzone 1 (both of which are also on PS3).

Interestingly, the third image has a blurred out panel next to Sackboy, hinting at as-yet unannounced games for the cloud service.

The fact that the games on it are either out, or coming soon, does paint a promising picture for the service’s release window. They also teased more info soon, so we could likely end up finding out that the launch is actually rather soon.

Are you glad to hear that Sony will be bringing full AAA PS3 games to Gaikai, or do you just not care about cloud? Let us know in the comments below, and stick to PSLS for more Gaikai coverage imminently.

Could someone explain to me what this means exactly?

It means streaming Sony content to any device through Gaikai, including games, films, TV and music. Here's my view on it:

Before people run amok and assume that this represents exactly what Gaikai has to offer, please bare in mind that Sony own it now and it could simply be them advertising Playstation. What we see here isn't necessarily what we will get and I noticed in the other threads how speculation lead to some quite amusing speculation, especially from those that own PCs and those that want Sony to belong to them... 'forever!'

Firstly, Sony won't put every single last PS game onto Gaikai. It wouldn't make sense and could ruin any chance of increasing sales of the PS3 and the PS4 (whenever it comes).

Secondly, There has been no mention that Uncharted or any other AAA Sony title would be coming to phones. We could be looking at two different markets here. One market would cover the bigger Blu-ray games while the other could cater to the smaller market... PSN games come to mind.

Sony will role this out slowly. They won't suddenly push all of their content through Gaikai. There will always be content that you can't get unless you are a Vita/PS3/PS4 owner and that's a given in my opinion, so we can stop the nonsensical debates about Gaikai making Sony consoles irrelevant.

You will probably get a lot of older PS games on Gaikai, such as Motorstorm, Uncharted, infamous or GOW, but Sony will reserve the newer AAA games for their own consoles (at least until they too become old titles). This will help IP awareness, making it much easier to build up a fanbase for the game, while simultaneously making Gaikai a worthwhile investment. They will offer just enough to make you hungry for more but to get more you'll have to buy a PS3 or a PS4. The same strategy will be used on mobile devices, so if you want to play AAA titles 'now', you're going to have to invest in Sony (unless you are willing to wait a year or two)

This is not to say that you won't be able to get tasters of newer AAA titles though. I would say it's a given that trials of coming games will also be made available through their partners. In fact I wouldn't be surprised to see that as part of the contract. Their partners can use Gaikai only if they are willing to carry the trials too: a two way deal that suits both parties. It advertises Sony consoles whilst offering people without a Sony console a taste of what they are missing. Regardless of what people think, having the PS brand on your product will help not hinder your product.

One service that WILL be immediately available to all through Gaikai is Sony's Movie, Music and TV services. These are not so console centric and really only offer an 'incentive' to buy the console. So there's little to be gained from holding some content back. This is also probably the service that will role out on TVs such as Bravias and other PS branded TVs. Games may come too, but I don't think they'll come immediately. My reasoning here is that for Gaikai to look attractive to laptop, phone and PC owners, there has to be something unique to their service, and games are the obvious choice.

As far as cost is concerned, I'd say there will be three possible options: A subscription fee, cheaper (or even free) too PS+ users, a separate subscription fee for none PS+ users and a pay as you go fee that allows you to play individual games for a minimal fee. Don't discount HOME from Gaikai either, the Arcade section could easily be used to play PSN games, Minis or PSMobile games.

Speculation is fun, but don't think in absolutes.

Sony: New Features Will Drop Into The New PSN Store “Every Month”

Download list sorting coming!

New PlayStation Store Impressions, Details & Info
Hands on.

On 17th of October, everything will change. We’ll have a brand new look and layout to the PSN store on PS3 which will completely overhaul how it handles in every day use.

Sony have been slaving away on the PSN store in secret for almost the last two years, taking opinions on how to improve the layout from numerous focus groups and gradually developing what effectively amounts to a completely new store. That difference starts right from the very first second, as the PSN store bag is now in a nice and stylish white, there’s a new welcome tone and there’s not a shade of blue in sight.

As the interface loads in over the background, there are just a handful of clear categories on the left hand side, What’s New, Games, Movies and TV. The rest of the screen is dominated by large hero images for featured games as before, taken from the What’s New section. The big difference is that rather than it refreshing seconds before you get to what you want to select, it stays put.

Here you can now scroll further to the right through an extended carousel of content, featuring a much larger selection of recent content for you to get at easily.

It's sleek and modern, but more importantly it's much easier to navigate and buy the things you want.
Each page of the carousel plays host to several items with one particular highlight taking over the full background, and some nice parallax effects shifting the content and images as you scroll across.

Scroll to the right or left and the next page peeks out from the side of the screen, and when you get to the end of what’s being highlighted it gives you options to continue browsing through related sections, rather than trapping you down the rabbit hole with a painful return to the top page in the offing.

It’s a system that will appear in many areas of the new layout, for the various highlights sections, from the latest big content to a new section for popular titles. That’s the first time that such a list has appeared on PSN, and means that popular titles will get to stay at the top of the pile that bit longer.

Beyond the major areas a wholly reworked system of content discovery has been implemented, starting off with a long list from such broad categories as All PS3 Games, Shooters and so on.

From here we will now have more granular filter and sorting options, so that you could narrow your browsing to only show PSN games, games that are lower than ?10, those which feature online multiplayer, or even listed by user rating.

Alongside this we also have a simplified and much improved Search. Gone is the obstructive on-screen keyboard, which lead to obtuse and dumb search results. We now have a scrollable list of letters to choose from which is much happier with DualShock controller input, and features reductive input. Say you want to search for Journey, start picking letters ‘JOU’, and the search engine starts to remove letters from the list that would no longer apply, making the ‘R’ you need much more prominent and quicker to find.

Although maybe you won’t need to hit the ‘R’ at all. The search results live update after each letter input, with a selection of the most popular and best results for that string of letters at the top, followed by a full list of other content which features that particular letter set. It’s also smart enough to take into account misspelt searches and acronyms for games, such as MW3, ME3, GTA4 and so on.

More info, better presented.

Whichever route you take, once you find the content you’re looking for you’re taken to a game hub for that item.

If it’s add-on content, there’s always going to be a prominent image linking back to the parent title, with further related DLC further down the page. Whatever the title, there’s always a text box which expands to offer more details on request, and where there are images and videos linked to it, these will now be thumbnails that let us quickly drop into full screen images and streaming video.

Not to mention easily accessible game demos and full game trials from these hubs. It draws all of the relevant content into a single, easily navigable space.

One thing that was made clear during the presentation was that this is just the first step in a larger programme of changes. Here Sony wanted to get the core basics to the new design in place, with a whole host of further functionality yet to come over the coming months. Things like adding filters and sorting to the often painfully huge Download List which long term owners still have are on the list of things, much to many peoples’ delight, I’m sure.

This is an update which is to be exclusive to the PS3 for now, and it’s an overhaul that the store has needed for the last couple of years. When the PS3 launched, e-commerce via your TV and console was still a fairly alien concept to many. Now Sony have finally been able to react to the ever shifting digital world, and this looks like it will really get the basics right with plenty more yet to come.

The new PlayStation Store, rolled out today, has suffered a difficult launch day.
Sony has reverted to the old PlayStation Store for the time being amid complaints from PlayStation 3 owners.
The new Store was issued this morning, when it began rolling out in territories including the UK, but PS3 owners reported a number of issues with it. Gamers complained about terrible loading times and problems adding funds to the PSN wallet.
Now, Sony has kicked users back to the old Store, which continues to work as it should.
"The last 30 mins with the new store has been the most frustrating experience I've had with PS for years," wrote "evret" on the PlayStation blog (http://blog.eu.playstation.com/2012/10/17/introducing-your-new-playstation-store/comment-page-5/#comments). "it failed to recognize I'm a Plus member till I quit and reloaded, had 3 Store crashes countless errors and now I can't add funds at all. Tried on PS3, Vita and on the SEN website with 3 different credit cards (all of which are valid with enough funds).
"All I wanted was Unfinished Swan and Borderlands 2 DLC but only managed to download a couple of demos... bring back the old store, at least it worked."
"I downloaded the new Store, a little slow, but otherwise looking great," said Xephon1970. "Tried to purchase The Unfinished Swan - did not recognise I'm a PS+ subscriber. Then the Store crashed, reloaded, crashed again. Now I have the old Store back. Restarted my console, the update is nowhere to be seen..."
The new Store is live for gamers in Australia, New Zealand and Nordic territories. It goes live in Austria, Switzerland, Netherlands and Belgium in the next hour, reads a tweet from the PlayStation Blog (https://twitter.com/PlayStationEU).
"Additional regions will then continue to be added throughout the night and into Thursday," reads the latest tweet. "If it's not with you now, it will be very soon!"

http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2012-10-17-new-ps-store-launch-issues-force-sony-to-revert-to-old-store

I had a brief go with the new store earlier, it was painfully slow at loading everything.

edit: New store is back, opening still takes far longer than it should but content instore now loads at a more reasonable pace. PS+ section currently doesn't recognise subscriptions but everything is still in the download list.

edit 2: New store opens in 30-35 seconds old in 5 seconds.

edit 3: We're back to old store again.

The only issue is that Cole died at the end of Infamous 2. He also wiped out all the super powered people and monsters. If it is Infamous 3, then it would have to have a new protagonist.

Wasn't there two endings for Infamous 2?

SPOILER = In the good ending you see him being put into the coffin and then the ship sails off. But just before the scene ends, there is a bolt of lightening that hits the ship

SPOILER = In the evil ending he doesn't die but remains evil.

There's plenty of scope for Infamous 3 there.

The good ending was the actual ending of the game. The evil ending is optional to have. Its with all games like that: the good ending is the actual ending. They made it like that for The Force Unleashed, and they did it for Singularity. Most of the time the good ending in a game is usually the actual ending.2012-10-18 23:43:00

The game had two endings. Each playthrough had different cutscenes and different missions. You can't say there was an 'actual' end to the game. And like I pointed out, the good ending suggested it wasn't the end. It would be a great idea if they allowed you to pick which playthrough you want from the very beginning of Infamous 3, so that they could begin with either cutscene and take it from there.

At the beginning of Infamous 2, you could transfer your good/evil profile from the first game. It'll probably work like that.

Yes, Sony bought Gaigai but we don't really know how it's going to be used yet. It was originally used for demos but that was only because they had a definite market they aimed at. We'll see, but the more I'm seeing of this the more I'm thinking it's actually just the launch of another marketing campaign. Perhaps we are reading too much into it.

Next Tuesday, October 23rd, we will be releasing a new system software update for PlayStation 3 (http://blog.us.playstation.com/category/ps3/) (version 4.30). With this update we have made several changes to how Trophies are displayed on your PlayStation 3. The Trophy Collection will now reside under PlayStation Network on the XMB. Trophies that you have earned playing PlayStation Vita (http://blog.us.playstation.com/category/ps-vita/) games are now displayed on your PlayStation 3. You will also be able to see your Trophy level and progress towards the next level while viewing your trophy collection.
http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8475/8107621731_e358c6bf92_z.jpg (http://www.flickr.com/photos/playstationblog/8107621731/)
By the beginning of November 2012, we will retire the services available through the Life with PlayStation application. In conjunction with its retirement, we will stop offering the Life with PlayStation application to new users with the 4.30 update. This includes the conclusion of our participation with Stanford University’s Folding@home, a distributed computing project aimed at understanding protein folding, misfolding and studying the causes of a variety of diseases such as Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s as well as various cancers.
We’d like to thank the more than 15 million users that have participated in the program since it started on PS3 in 2007. PS3 users have donated in total more than 100 million computation hours to the Folding@home project to date, and as a result, contributing greatly to Stanford University’s Alzheimer ’s disease research. Considering the contribution PS3 has made to the project, we decided to retire it as a result of discussions with Stanford University.
Vijay Pande, Folding@home research lead at Stanford University, had this to say about your contributions:

“The PS3 system was a game changer for Folding@home, as it opened the door for new methods and new processors, eventually also leading to the use of GPUs. We have had numerous successes in recent years. Specifically, in a paper just published in the Journal of Medicinal Chemistry, we report on tests of predictions from earlier Folding@home simulations, and how these predictions have led to a new strategy to fight Alzheimer’s disease. The next steps, now underway at Stanford, are to take this lead compound and help push it towards a viable drug. It’s too early to report on our preliminary results there, but I’m very excited that the directions set out in this paper do appear to be bearing fruit in terms of a viable drug (not just a drug candidate).”

Zynga joins the lay-offs and closures party.

Update: Zynga CEO and founder Mark Pincus offered a statement detailing the publisher's downsizing. Here are the most pertinent bits:

"We are sunsetting 13 older games and we're also significantly reducing our investment in The Ville."
"We are closing the Zynga Boston studio and proposing closures of the Zynga Japan and UK studios. Additionally, we are reducing staffing levels in our Austin studio. All of these represent terrific entrepreneurial teams, which make this decision so difficult."
"In all, we will unfortunately be parting ways with approximately five per cent of our full time workforce. We don't take these decisions lightly as we recognize the impact to our colleagues and friends who have been on this journey with us. We appreciate their amazing contributions and will miss them."
"This is the most painful part of an overall cost reduction plan that also includes significant cuts in spending on data hosting, advertising and outside services, primarily contractors."
"These reductions, along with our ongoing efforts to implement more stringent budget and resource allocation around new games and partner projects, will improve our profitability and allow us to reinvest in great games and our Zynga network on web and mobile."
Original story: Social games maker Zynga has let go over 100 staff from its Austin-based studio, according to a first-hand report at Gamasutra (http://gamasutra.com/view/news/180005/Breaking_Mass_layoffs_closures_at_Zynga.php#.UIbmX MUUBsf).
It appears the layoffs occurred during Apple's iPad Mini reveal press conference earlier today. Did Zynga try to bury bad news?

Rumours are spilling in that the Boston and Chicago-based branches have been similarly affected, and The Verge (http://www.theverge.com/2012/10/23/3544176/zynga-reportedly-lays-off-100-employees-during-apples-event-shutters) reported The Ville is "now done" and will be shut down along with another unfinished game, according to an ex-Zynga staffer.
Zynga is yet to respond to the reports. We've reached out for comment and will update as we hear more.
If true the layoffs are yet another terrible blow for the social games behemoth, which has witnessed its stock price crash (http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2012-10-05-zynga-shares-tumble-to-all-time-low-as-boss-tells-staff-everythings-okay) throughout 2012 and high-profile executives (http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2012-08-09-former-ea-exec-john-schappert-quits-zynga) exit the company. It's also embroiled in a nasty legal tussle with EA, which accuses Zynga of copying its The Sims Social game. Stock is down nearly five per cent to $2.20 ahead of tomorrow's third quarter financial results.

Hope that can give it the boost in sales it desperatly needs.

Coupled with the latest slew of new games, I can't see why not. Europe always has the largest sales of Vita too, so perhaps the usual average of 18,000 a week will rise to 25,000, although it's difficult to work out averages at this time of year.

Tech demo of up and coming game from Playhouse Entertainment:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4QyPu-D4YSI

Now that's an headline you don't read too often. During the last couple of years, in fact, Move-only games have become synonymous with casual/sport/party games, further strengthening the notion that motion controls are irrelevant in the realm of hardcore experiences. Well, here is a developer that wants to prove otherwise.

The developer in question is Playhouse Entertainment, and the reason why you have never heard of them before is because they have been formally incorporated only last January. The company, which is based in Canada, is so young indeed that it's formally comprised of just one person: its founder and president Brett Gale.

But the curriculum (or lack thereof), is really not that important. What's important here is the motivation, one which Gale explains as follows.

"I’ve been a huge gamer my entire life, and I'm always excited when I see something I believe can make a positive impact on the way we currently play games. That's why I was so happy when motion controls came out. I started thinking of all these cool ways that developers were going start to use them to make games feel more realistic, using natural arm movements to interact with all objects seen in the game.

Many years have passed and there have been very few games to come close to the amount of control that I originally imagined when I first saw what motion controls were capable of.

If you're not shaking the controller one minute, you're forced to aim the motion controller as the camera the next, essentially eliminating motion-controlled gameplay and dumbing incredible technology down to work as a mouse cursor.

The main reason I founded Playhouse Entertainment Inc. and began developing a PlayStation Move dedicated game is because I believe my unique control scheme fixes all previous control problems and introduces realistic motion controlled gameplay that is on par with expensive virtual reality systems."

Now, while Gale won't go into details about how his "unique control scheme" works, he did put together a short but nevertheless fascinating tech demo called "The DualPLAY" (not the actual game title, mind you) highlighting the kind of interactions his control solution allows for.

"The tech demo is something I developed several months ago with the purpose of proving that the motion controlled gameplay I have always desired is not only possible, but actually offers some of the most natural and realistic character control I have ever experienced."

Here it is:

Running under the Unity 3D engine (which is not necessarily the engine the final game will adopt, I'm told), the tech demo is not meant to represent what the game will look like (so please close an eye over the rudimentary graphics - it's super early prototyping stage!) but rather how you are supposed to interact with the virtual world. That is, via what seems to be a dual-Move set up providing 1:1 control over a pair of hands.

Besides the cool ideas on display (especially the riot shield plus gun near the end - I love that!), what's interesting about this video is that the dual Move set up doesn't seem to hinder character movement as much as you would expect from a stick-less control solution. You can even see him strafing from time to time.

I asked Gale for more information, but he's currently unwilling to go into any detail on that subject. He wouldn't even confirm he's using two Move motion controllers, in spite of what seems to be an obvious assumption to make. Is he using buttons for movement? He wouldn't say either.

In any case, Playhouse is currently looking for talent (check the website at www.playhouseentertainment.com for contact information) and is planning on having a small booth at the 2013 Game Developer Conference in March where a more up to date version of the project will be on display for anyone to play and check out how it controls for the first time.

As for when we can expect this tech demo to blossom into an actual product we can buy, Gale is currently considering to self-publish the game as a downloadable title via the PlayStation Store. Release date to be decided.

I'll definitely keep an eye on this.

News On PS Vita’s Own PlayStation Plus Coming Next Week

http://www.thesixthaxis.com/2012/11/02/news-on-ps-vitas-own-playstation-plus-coming-next-week/

This could be HUGE:

PlayStation 3 may finally launch in China

Sony has gained approval to launch the PlayStation 3 in China, a country where games consoles are technically illegal.

Authorities granted the PS3 a "China Compulsory Certificate" in July, Techinasia reports, although the

machine has yet to formally materialise. Sony first launched the PlayStation 3 in Japan nearly six years ago.

Kaz and Ken, back in the day.

China implemented its console ban in 2000 to protect the nation's youth - and in doing so created a grey-market for games consoles and arguably encouraged piracy.

Consoles can be sold if labelled as home entertainment devices, which, with its Blu-ray player and various online services, the PlayStation 3 is anyway.

Microsoft has never released the Xbox 360 in China. Similarly, Nintendo has never released the Wii, although the company does sell other hardware in the country under the iQue brand.

The 3DS XL is set to arrive in China this December, Nintendo announced earlier this week, with three exclusive designs. Each will have Mario Kart 7 and Super Mario 3D Land pre-loaded.

THQ Deathwatch continues

THQ posted net sales of $107 million and an operating loss of $19 million in fiscal 2013's second quarter, which ended September 30. This is compared with 2012's Q2 results of $146 million in net sales, and an operating loss of $97 million.

In a bid to stay afloat, in 2012 THQ has undergone corporate reshuffling (http://www.joystiq.com/2012/07/23/thq-hires-relic-co-founder-former-ea-coo-as-new-exec-vp-of-pro/), has closed studios (http://www.joystiq.com/2012/07/19/thq-shuttering-arizona-qa-facility-moving-all-qa-to-montreal-th/), laid off staff (http://www.joystiq.com/tag/thq,layoffs), rearranged its product line (http://www.joystiq.com/2012/06/20/saints-row-enter-the-dominatrix-canceled/) and enacted a reverse stock split (http://www.joystiq.com/2012/07/02/thq-retains-nasdaq-listing-as-board-approves-reverse-stock-split/). THQ's most recent mainstream launch was Darksiders 2, which sold 1.4 million copies in Q2 2013. THQ CEO Brian Farrell said these sales were "below our expectations."

THQ delayed (http://www.joystiq.com/2012/11/05/THQ-delays-metro-last-light-company-of-heroes-2-south-park/) South Park: The Stick of Truth, Company of Heroes 2 and Metro: Last Light today, citing a need for more time to realize the games' full potentials. This means THQ may seek more money from outside investors and through internal shake-ups in the interim, the fiscal report (http://investor.thq.com/phoenix.zhtml?c=96376&p=irol-newsArticle&ID=1754428&highlight) said.

"The calendar movement for the release of games will likely create a need for additional capital. THQ has engaged Centerview Partners LLC to assist the company in evaluating strategic and financing alternatives intended to improve THQ's overall liquidity, including raising additional capital, preserve the company's ability to bring the best possible games to market during the most advantageous release windows and to help address the $100 million 5% convertible senior notes due August 2014."

http://www.joystiq.com/2012/11/05/thqs-q2-sees-107-million-in-net-sales-needs-more-money-for-de/

(Reuters) - THQ Inc (THQI.O (http://www.reuters.com/finance/stocks/overview?symbol=THQI.O)) lost almost half its market value on Tuesday after the struggling videogames publisher delayed a raft of marquee titles, warned of a growing need for new capital, and admitted its "Darksiders II" had undershot expectations.
Shares in the company, which is trimming staff and considering alternatives to try and relieve a potential capital crunch, plunged as much as 46 percent in their biggest single-day loss in years.
On Monday, executives said they were pushing back the release of key titles such as its "South Park" game that were not ready for primetime - a postponement that increases the company's need for capital. It is weighing options and executives did not outline them nor take questions on a Monday post-earnings (http://www.reuters.com/finance/earnings) conference call.
The company has suspended earnings (http://www.reuters.com/finance/markets/earnings?lc=int_mb_1001) guidance and withdrawn its previous outlook for fiscal 2013.
THQ sold just 1.4 million units of action-adventure game "Darksiders" since its August launch, far short of a break-even target of 2 million. The game's disappointment comes with Microsoft's (MSFT.O (http://www.reuters.com/finance/stocks/overview?symbol=MSFT.O)) "Halo 4" and Activision Blizzard's (ATVI.O (http://www.reuters.com/finance/stocks/overview?symbol=ATVI.O)) "Call of Duty: Black Ops 2," launching this month, expected to dominate holiday sales.
THQ's stock, suspended from after-hours trading on Monday, plunged 42 percent to $1.74 in morning trading.

It's not looking good for THQ, which is a pity because Darksiders 2 is an excellent game. The trouble with this industry is that it's become fashionable. One look in this forum shows which titles continuously pop to the top.2012-11-07 18:01:00

Seriously, you need to do some research. The one thing the Vita doesn't lack is games. The media have brainwashed you lot. No doubt you don't want to play PS3 type games on the Vita, don't want to play the more handheld orientated games, don't like any of the Vita exclusives, don't want to play PSP games, don't want to play PS1 games and are not interested in PSMobile. Yeah, I've heard it all before.

First off, there's no need to be rude, and I'll thank you to stifle any smart comments about being "brainwashed by the media", because I rarely read gaming editorials. Looking at what's been released and what's been announced, there's not a lot of original development being done on the Vita right now which is the reason for the dry spell of games that we're seeing right now.

The media have brainwashed you lot.

I think we can form our own opinions and don't need to practice self-delusion to make us feel better about our purchases.

I certainly would like to see more Vita exclusives; I got my Vita at launch and have only purchased 5 games for it...that tells me Sony has a problem. I didn't need a Vita to play PSP and PS1 games...I have both a PSP and PS3.

I'm currently playing Ragnarok Odyssey on my Vita and it's ok...but MHFU is still the better game by leaps and bounds so that's pretty disappointing.

I know a lot of people are excited about Persona 4 Golden...but it's a port of an old game and while I really like JRPGs I absolutely hated Persona 3 so 4 isn't something I look forward to.

The upcoming Vita launch lineup is dismal, the next game I am interested in is Soul Sacrifice...and it might be terrible.

yeah, it does the same to me. Though at the bottom if I click on "Manage account" it takes me right to the page already logged in. But in the store it still says "sign In." You know what would be really awesome? If you could download to from your PC to a thumbdrive and then later install it on your PS3. Then I could download these huge files from a faster source.2012-12-08 20:36:00

It's only out in selected areas of Europe at the moment, but it's really well presented and runs smoothly

THQ Deathwatch: 2013 edition.

Groups take issue with proposed expedited bidding process, refusal to sell off specific series and assets

When THQ declared bankruptcy (http://www.gamesindustry.biz/articles/2012-12-19-thq-files-for-bankruptcy-protection-arranges-sale) last month, it also announced plans to sell itself to Clearlake Capital Group for $60 million within 30 days, pending a bidding process and court approvals. Those approvals may not come, as the Distressed Debt Investing blog reports that yesterday a pair of objections were filed in the case.

One objection came from US Trustee Roberta DeAngelis, who took issue with THQ's proposed auction process in bankruptcy court. DeAngelis said the schedule THQ laid out for the sale (with a proposed final sale hearing on January 10) was too short to let parties beyond Clearlake fully participate in the proceedings. Additionally, the $2.25 million in fees and reimbursements Clearlake would be due if another company won the bidding under THQ's plan was too large relative to the cash offered in the actual bid, according to DeAngelis' objection.
Some of THQ's creditors were similarly unhappy, as a committee of note holders from the publisher filed their own objection. In its filing, the committee alleged that THQ management had arranged the terms of the auction not to maximize the value of the company's assets so that it can make good on its debts, but to keep their jobs and keep THQ's doors open. For example, the group took exception to THQ's refusal to entertain offers for anything less than the whole company, eliminating the possibility of strategic buyers bidding for just the franchises or assets they need most. On top of that, the note holders are accusing THQ management of manufacturing its current cash shortage in order to increase the time pressures and force a sale to Clearlake on short notice.
"Taken as a whole, the bidding procedures are designed specifically to ensure that Clearlake is the successful bidder and that the Debtors' business will continue as a 'going concern,' whether or not such outcome would be in the best interests of the Debtors' unsecured creditors and/or maximize the value of the Debtors' estates," the committee stated.
The bankruptcy court hearing on bidding procedures for the THQ sale is scheduled for tomorrow. Under THQ's proposed time line, the auction would take place January 9, with the final sale hearing the following day.

Rare veteran George Andreas has left Microsoft to join Sony.

Andreas, who played a key role in the development of the Kinect hardware, Kinect Sports 1 and Kinect Sports: Season 2 as well as Xbox 360 launch games Kameo and Perfect Dark Zero, joined Sony this month as creative director of Sony Computer Entertainment Europe, working out of SCEE's London office.

During his 16 years at Rare he worked on most of the legendary studio's games, including various Banjo titles, Viva Pinata and, going back to Rare's Nintendo years, Donkey Kong 64, GoldenEye and Killer Instinct Gold.

I think it's probably for Ascension, as stupid as I think it is to tease a big reveal for a game already announced and coming in less than two months or so...

Or maybe it's a Vita GoW game. :/

Ehh, they look like nothing more than little fake teases to keep us not forgetting by the time they actually have real stuff to show. Not that it'd be that hard to remember a new God of War's coming, or new games for the PS3 this year, for that matter.

Anyway though, Xseed just recently revealed five different games they'll be localizing to the U.S. These five are...

1. The Killer is Dead (PS3/Xbox 360)
2. Rune Factory 4 (3DS)
3. Valhalla Knights 3 (PSV)
4. Ys Celceta (PSV)
5. Ys I and II Chronicles (PC)

Unity Tools Coming for PlayStation Developers

+ Posted by David Helgason // CEO, Unity Technologies
Unity for PlayStation

Today, all of us at Unity Technologies are thrilled to announce a partnership with SCEA that will see Unity tools developed for PlayStation platforms! We’ll be making games built on Unity deployable to PS4, PS3, PS Vita, PS Mobile, and SCE’s future cloud services.

So what is Unity? Well, it’s only the most widely used game creation toolset and engine in the world. It’s so popular because it’s based on the idea of democratizing game development. That means making as many awesome and powerful tools available to as many developers as possible, regardless of how big or small their company or team. Unity is elegant, efficient, approachable, extensible, and affordable. Unity makes it easy to iterate and Unity does the heavy lifting when porting games to other platforms. Code is automatically converted, and just polish and optimization for that specific platform needs to be added. But all the other stuff — the art, the game logic, artificial intelligence, sound — everything else, remains the same.

In a close vote by recognized industry experts from the media and analyst community, Hermit Crab in Space was crowned as the winner of the PlayStation Mobile NYC GameJam. A member of the Golden Ruby Games team will receive airfare, hotel, and one pass to the E3 2013 trade show scheduled to take place June 11-13, 2013 at the Los Angeles Convention Center. At E3 2013, Golden Ruby Games will have a dedicated space in the PlayStation booth to showcase their game to conference attendees. Lastly, if Hermit Crab in Space is submitted to and passes SCE Quality Assurance by September 27, 2013, Golden Ruby Games will also receive a special promotional package, which includes marketing, PR, and community support through a variety of PlayStation channels.

Sony open to letting indie devs charge for early access to PS4 games

http://www.theverge.com/2013/3/26/4151026/sony-will-let-indie-devs-charge-for-early-access-to-ps4-games

"Yeah, if it doesn't have any bugs that are completely destroying the world," Adam Boyes, VP of publisher and developer relations at Sony America told Joystiq last night at the PlayStation Indie Arcade event. "[CCP's Dust 514] is a great example of putting out content that you know is not final. If you want to monetize it, that's fine. I mean, if you want to put out a game that's playable and does pass the checklists and stuff, you can. If it doesn't sell and you can't support, you may not want to support, but we absolutely support that."

Boyes noted the buy-in alpha openness wasn't just for the upcoming PlayStation 4, but could be applied to PS3, Vita or PlayStation mobile.

He continued, "We allow that on all of our platforms, that sort of continually updating and selling. Again, if people buy it and they're passionate about it, and you want to improve it and make it better over time you can."

XCOM FPS rebranded as "The Bureau"?

http://kotaku.com/ghost-recon-breakfast-cereal-an-xcom-switcheroo-plus-461097826

Last week, Take-Two registered the domains thebureau-game.com, thebureau-game.net, whathappenedin62.com, and whathappenedin62.net. These domains seem to hint at a rebranding of 2K's beleaguered XCOM shooter, which places players in the shoes of an FBI agent in 1962. Given the success of Firaxis' XCOM: Enemy Unknown, I wouldn't be surprised if 2K thought having two very different games in different genres could dilute the franchise's brand.

The XCOM shooter has been in off-on development since 2005 and gone through a number of iterations at several studios, including 2K Australia, Irrational Games and current developer 2K Marin. Recent information suggests that 2K dropped the first-person perspective in favor of SOCOM-esque third-person tactical shooter possibly for downloadable distribution platforms.

Sounds like the same for Frostbite 3

Some Wii U owners are disappointed to see Battlefield 4 is not coming to the console. What, exactly, is the reason for that?
Patrick Bach: The biggest problem we have right now is we don't want to back down from what we see as our low spec machines. We right now don't have support for the Wii U in the Frostbite engine. The reason for that is it takes development time. What should we focus on to create the best possible Battlefield experience? We are now focused on PC and the current-gen platforms, and then there might be other platforms in the future that we can't talk about...

Huh. EA is REALLY hating on the Wii U.

Makes you wonder if the rumors of them being ticked off Nintendo didn't give them control of the Wii U's online are true >_>

This does sound more plausible, especially with the poor third party support being far more wide spread than just EA.

That goes with Ubisoft too. At Wii U launch they had some cruddy games like ZombiU and Rabbids Land.

Ubisoft are probably the biggest third party supporter on the Wii U, even if those games were "cruddy" they were also some of the very few third party exclusives. Looking forwards Ubisoft are one of the few third parties with multi platform releases announced for the Wii U that are going be released at the same time as versions on other consoles.

Should be entertaining to see how this progresses.
Seeing youtube legend Francis take an axe to his 360 while wailing in response to this news should be part of Microsoft's advertisement campaign, hehe.

also that apology didn't really help. they obviously don't care too much for their customers and they didn't try to retract the always online claim, which would suggest it was true...

Sony will also be leaning heavily towards digital distribution and streaming content with the PS4. They hate used game sales as much as Microsoft does, I wouldn't fool yourself into thinking they're any better.

I don't think you'll need Gold just for a basic sign in and verrify process but new console could mean new rules.

Some 3DS strategy game called Project X Zone is coming to the US in June. It basically has a bunch of Capcom, Sega, and Namco Bandai characters in it.

http://www.gameinformer.com/b/news/archive/2013/04/06/project-x-zone-coming-to-north-america-in-june.aspx

It really surprises me that Sonic isn't in the game, since he is Sega's mascot, but heck, X and Zero are in it.

It's pretty clear to me from what they've said that they'll be leaning heavily towards digital distribution and streaming. Even over the lifespan of the PS3 you can see that.

The PS3 offered at least some kind of backwards compatability with PS2 games at launch, for instance, but that "offline" feature along with OtherOS were removed in firmware updates in favour of more online intergration.

I don't have any doubts that the PS4 will take this to the next level, removing more offline functionality and replacing it with online services and more online games.

I think as we get closer to launch we'll see schemes that will encourage you not to buy a physical copy of the game, to quell the used game market and your ability to share games with your friends without Sony as an intermediatory. Their aims are the same as Microsoft.

I'm ok with all this, as long as we can have some kind of world-wide high speed wireless connection for reasonable price until then.

I want to see if they will sack the always-online-ness fame of their unreleased console. Or else, the PS4 might sack the new Xbox out of existence. Why are developers so stubborn?

The Legend of Zelda: Wall Master

Good news all around. I'm not fond of Link's design so far, but that might change. The gimmick is a bit silly, but there isn't enough information to really tell what else they're going to do with it. Mario & Luigi: Dream Team is also looking pretty charming.

Also, Earthbound. Yes please, now release Mother 3.

I bet that at some point Nintendo might make a 3DS remake of Mother 3 at some point. There is a -4,000% chance that it would happen though.

Link's design is that of his appearance in ALttP, as this seems to be a sequel of sorts, the only thing I don't like about him is that they just recycled Toon Link's voice. The wall gimmick looks really, really awful as well.

I'm not looking forward to Dream Team at all, the Mario & Luigi series has been getting more gimmicky since the second one, a game like the first two without all of the nonsense would be a buy for me though.

Mother 4 anyone?

Mother 4 anyone?

The gimmick doesn't look particularly fun in the LttP sequel, but there was only 15 seconds of footage. Maybe there'll be good puzzles, who knows? Right now it is admittedly really dumb and hopefully the game won't be based around that. In regards to Link, I know it is a sequel, but the character design just looks off and under developed. Other than that the visuals are nice looking, and they brought back the mana bar so that's a plus. Hey, it's not Spirit Tracks so how horrible can it be? It does suck that they are just reusing the same overworld. Half of the fun of Zelda games is exploring a huge new world. I also though Link's Awakening was a pretty good sequel, so I don't really know why they didn't just make a new, unaffiliated entry.

I would actually argue that Bowser's Inside Story was the best Mario RPG ever. The first two games in the series were actually fairly mediocre and tedious in retrospect. Essentially all Nintendo games are gimmicky, and BIS happened to have well implemented ones (save for the dumb minigames, those can go away). It also was an incredibly charming and funny game, with the best pacing out of all of the RPGs (including Paper Mario). Granted, Dream Team will probably not be able to live up to expectations but I have no reason to believe it will be a bad game.

There's currently a (crappy) Mother 4 fan project. To be honest, the trilogy was enough. Mother 3 was a fantastic finale and any more games might undermine that. If they localized (and potentially remade) all of the games I would be happy.

So monday had the announcement that development on Skyrim had ended. http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2013-04-15-skyrim-team-moving-on-to-our-next-major-project-presumably-fallout-4

Three days later we have our first retailer leaking a game + DLC re-release.

Our friends at Eurogamer Poland (http://www.eurogamer.pl/articles/2013-04-18-skyrim-legendary-edition-w-czerwcu) have unearthed the Skyrim: Legendary Edition, which is said to contain the core game along with its Dawnguard, Hearthfire and Dragonborn DLC packs.
This cumulative edition of Bethesda's open-world fantasy blockbuster was spotted at Polish retailer Ultima (http://www.ultima.pl/search.php?search=Skyrim+Legendary+Edition), where it was given a 7th June tentative release date. The Xbox 360 and PS3 versions were priced at 169.90 zł (roughly ?35 / $54), while the PC version was listed at 139.90 zł (about ?29 / $44).
We're following up with Bethesda to try to confirm the Skyrim: Legendary Edition's existence, date, and price, but a collector's edition with all of the DLC would make sense given that Bethesda recently confirmed that it wouldn't be releasing any more content (http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2013-04-15-skyrim-team-moving-on-to-our-next-major-project-presumably-fallout-4) for its 17-month old hit. We'll update as we find out more.

Seems Capcom is not doing so great atm I heard.

What's with all these game companies on the edge of dieing lately?

And if it costs them to much to make these games, then as much as I love pretty graphics, Perhaps they should spent more time on making good games with just ok graphics. And make less games altogether so the ones they do make get more focus. it's about quality not quantity afterall. *mew

The thing is that most gamers only buy games if it has good graphics.

And making less games would be putting all their eggs in one basket, and I don't need to bring out the moral of that cliche.

Well they need to find a way to budget the way they spend money on creating games or they'll have to face the music when they don't have enough money anymore to use to make games. *mew

That's a delusion that some big publishers seem to have. A good chunk of popular games are hideously ugly, though.

True, I suppose some games like Minecraft and DayZ disprove that notion... as well as the notion of every game needing to be scripted. Also, I guess the Call of Duty games aren't that graphically intensive...

But on the large part, it seems like it's the case.
