RCAF Night Patrol

So I just managed to piece together a major part of this level. It's about one third of the level, and I'm not sure how well it works. The level itself is not finished, so I cannot stress enough the importance of constructive feedback. Don't get me wrong praise is great too.

Anyway, the level (when finished) will be split into three parts, each reminiscent of an old dog-fighting game of some sort. The one I'm testing is based on the gameplay of 1942 Joint Strike. It will be the part to appear in the level, and will be preceded by a short (really short) demo of the first segment which is a 2D side-scrolling style.

The part you play will play for about 100 seconds. Any feedback is greatly appreciated.

You asked for a review so I'd be more than happy to give you one. Sorry if its long-ish. Here goes. (My views both positive and negative are solely based on my honest opinion and nothing is meant to be a "slap in the face"

Lets start from the opening. From When you go in, The first thing i see is barbed wire. It seems misplaced because of the spacing in the barbed wire material. In my opinion, I believe you should just make a nice cloudy background and forget about the barbed wire. Another thing on the background, when i get to the end of the line of planes, the spacing from them to the plane you actually get in to is quite bland. Like i said before. Spice it up with some cloudy backgrounds and maybe even some distant trees and mountains {seeing as you are using 3D}

After you get in your plane and such, you are taken to a side view of an airplane able to shoot and drop bombs. In my opinion, that should be a whole another game. Just flying the plane and doing flips and shooting at absolutely nothing was a blast. Honestly! Throwing in some obstacles and enemies (air and ground forces) trying to take you out with an adequate scoring system. That would make my day. I really think you should consider doing that.

Going on to the actual game. I absolutely loved the mechanics of it. However, there were a few noticeable issues. When your plane goes off screen, It just stays off screen. You should make it so that the plane gets pulled forward without being off screen or make it blow up if the player goes off screen, I found it quite easy to evade some of the opposition that way. The scrolling camera seems like its going a bit slow as well. I would make the camera go a bit faster so it doesn't seem laggy. Also throw in some detail on the ground such as roads, tanks, soldiers, water, trees or a Walmart. Anything will do as i'm beginning to find out that possibilities are endless in lbp2. Go crazy!

In conclusion, I honestly fell in love with the scrolling shooters after playing this. It has the potential to display more realism than any scrolling shooter I've ever played on lbp. I understand you are in testing right now and that this is not the finished project but that doesn't matter because this level even being bland (at the moment) feels right. Consider making 2 levels out of this idea as i had suggested and i can see your views going far. I wish you good luck in the future of this level and i would love to see what you come up with in the future.

Wow! This is an awesome start. I can't wait to see the finished product. I think that you could maybe develop the story in the beginning though (not sure if there is supposed to be much of one). Also, I feel that in the side scrolling part there should be some instructions as to what to do. I died a couple of times and had to restart because I thought it was a movie sequence so I didn't touch the controls. Once I got to the top down part the gameplay was great! I must agree with curtislarkin on the screen boundaries bit. There has to be a way to restrict the players to the confines of the visible screen. Great job on this!

As for the F4F... If you could check out my Metal Gear Sackboy: Unraveling Stitches (https://lbpcentral.lbp-hub.com/index.php?t=72941-Metal-Gear-Sackboy-Unraveling-Stitches) series I'd greatly appreciate it. Thanks!
