The official Sound Shapes level showcase thread

Archive: 26 posts

I know there are a couple other Sound Shapes threads floating around the forum, but I thought I'd start one that people can use to post their levels, share feedback, and find levels to play.

If you're created a Sound Shapes level or would like to recommend one made by someone else, post it here! Don't forget to include a link to the level's page on soundshapesgame.com (http://www.soundshapesgame.com/community.html).

I'll maintain a list of levels posted and recommended levels so it's easy for everyone to queue to their hearts' content.

EDIT:
soundshapesgame.com appears to be temporarily down.

Both codibear8383 and Joey have levels, as well as quite a few other LBP'ers I've found, but I haven't had a chance to play them all just yet. I also just completed my own level but haven't been able to publish it yet. Hopefully they get the server issue fixed soon.

Haha, well I already have a good idea of what my first level will be based on musically, and also a rough idea on the visuals.

Can you create your own sounds? As in choose an instrument, edit it's distortion (or something of that nature) etc? Or is it only making music from samples?

Also it's a shame there's no official forum for this game. These creative games really need them.

Or is it only making music from samples? You can't create your own sounds, but there's a pretty good variety of samples and you can do some limited tweaking, such as transposing notes to changing the progression and many other musician-y sorts of things I don't understand at all.2012-08-12 18:44:00

That's cool. Also, can you change the sound of some of the objects? Like in a vid I saw the guy put lazers down that made this beat sound. Is that editable at all?

I'd love for them to have DLC later down the line to give you more options, though I'm sure there's plenty of choice on there already.

Iv'e got a question regarding create mode.

I'm trying to create..uh..some sort of creature, and I want the eyes to appear in front of the head block. Is there some sort of layering system with materials that one can access, or is it just.. random?

The editor is very easy and satesfying to use, by the way

Is that editable at all?Yes, you can change the rhythm of most objects through a "tap to record" interface. The nice part about this feature is that the pattern can extend across I believe 6 or 8 measures (instead of just 1 for normal notes) so it's possible to orchestrate more complex patterns and melodies using things like the laser object. Many objects will change their tone/note based on how high or low on the screen they are placed as well.

I'm trying to create..uh..some sort of creature, and I want the eyes to appear in front of the head block. Is there some sort of layering system with materials that one can access, or is it just.. random? It's kind of random. I haven't figured out all of the details quite yet but with some messing around you can usually get what you want.

Generally speaking, more recently placed objects seem to go in front of previously placed objects, but this is not always the case. Some objects tend to be in front more often (e.g., stones) and other objects tend to always be in the back more often (e.g., buildings). One thing I have found is that when you get one object to go in front of another object how you want, use the copy feature - subsequent copies of that object will behave layer-wise like the one you copied. They will go in front of and behind objects the same as the original object would.

There really needs to be a simple "move to front" option but otherwise it isn't too bad to deal with once you get used to it.

The editor is very easy and satesfying to use, by the way Agreed. It's very fun and easy to get into. My favorite way to create is to make the music first and then design the platforming around it.

Tbh I couldn't care less about the music. I am a horrible music maker, heh. I'd love to do random scenery & gameplay stuff, but it's hard when you haven't uncovered the secrets of layering yet. Hopefully there's a move to front button coming soon

This game is awesome, but there's not enough options in the level creator I find. Having to use specific samples from the songs already in the game is a shame. Needs more felixibility! Still great though.2012-08-26 02:21:00

I don't think so. This game really does need its own message board to survive a bit more with the whole creation sharing.2012-08-27 22:41:00

I'm going to publish something eventually, but I am kinda disappointed with the game editor. First of all the tutorial for creating your own level is just awful. All it teaches you are the most simplest things anyone would be able to figure out without the tutorial. It was about one and a half minute long and isn't helpful at all if you want to go more in-depth.

When it comes to the actual editing it's not hard to see that this wasn't designed for the dualshock. Re-sizing and rotating blocks is just frustrating and is a very slow process. Why couldn't they just do it like in LBP where you first choose the shape you want to use then just resize it before you place it down, instead of having to place it down, then choose a corner of the object then pull the analog stick to make it either taller or wider.

Same goes with the editor menu which of course looks like a menu you'd find on a handheld mobile touch game. Speaking of the menu, there really isn't that much stuff on there. All the objects (aside from the 'basic objects&apos are from the different single-player levels. They all look - and sound very different so when you mix objects from a lot of different themes it gets.. weird. If you create a level using the instruments from one album and then adds an object from a different album it can totally mess up the entire song. For instance I was creating a level using using the instruments from the first album (Hello, World). Those instruments are very relaxing and soothing. Then I added this big cog object from another album because it would really enhance the gameplay (and it did). However, it totally ruined the song, because the sound it made didn't fit in at all with the rest of the instruments. It seems that the designers of the game really didn't think all the objects and instruments through because to make a level that actaully looks and sound good, you have to stick to only one theme (aka album).

There's some other stuff with the editor that bothers me too but I'm not going to go into that. Maybe I'm just used to how amazing the LBP editor is..

/Rant.

Well you can look at it two ways: You can complain that it doesn't suit the PS3 or you can rejoice in the fact that a game that was once only available for the Vita is now available for the PS3 and you get both versions for the price of one

For instance, I'm happy that I can play some of my favourite PS1 games on my Vita now, but others gamers complain that they can't play one specific game that they suddenly wanted.

The game was originally intended for vita, so I wouldn't be too bummed about the controls. I gotta agree with some of the points you made about the creation aspect though. Wish we could choose from a range of sounds for each object, and not just the rhythm on some of them.2012-08-29 02:21:00

I'm not saying the game is bad, I'm just saying it's very disappointed to see that the developers didn't focus more on the editor, regardless of platform, especially since this was the game's main selling point. This was kind of that one game that really wanted me to get a Vita, but seeing that it's also available on the PS3, I really don't see any reason to buy a Vita (At least until LBP VITA launches c2012-08-29 16:46:00

DLC incoming:

It was announced today on the Hong Kong PlayStation Blog that Sound Shapes will be receiving some level creation DLC packs this week. There are 4 packs in total, 3 of which are sound packs. They are cross buy, so you get access to these packs on both PS Vita and PS3 when you buy them.

8-Bit Sound Pack
Acoustic Sound Pack
Curved Terrain Pack [Free]
Drum Kit Sound Pack

While this isn’t more single player content, I am really happy to see the developers supporting the online builders with these new packs. I will reach out to the Sound Shapes team and see if we can get some info about release in other regions.

Is there some sort of bug with this game that I'm not aware of. I bought this game a couple of day ago and I've been trying to play certain levels. It works fine when I just choose the picks but it will not allow me to play anyones levels that I search for at all. Even if I hit their name on the level I've played and go to there page, and it says 12 in the 'levels' section, it still says: 'this player has not published any levels yet' and will nt recognise that I'm pressing X on their list of games. It's doing it on EVERY single person's profile. Am I supposed to do something?2012-12-22 10:11:00

No matter what creator I go to, no matter how many songs it says they have, I can't click on the songs and it always says 'this user hasn't published any levels yet' on the right hand side. Surely there must be a way of viewing all of a creators levels.2013-01-01 18:39:00
