Am I the only one...... (MM Picks)
Archive: 16 posts
Am I the only one who thinks MM Picks are boring? I mean, they sure look artistic, the environment and everything is awesome, but they are mostly slow and boring. This thread is to disscuss this thing and maybe other things on 'MM Picks' topic. | 2012-08-11 09:55:00 Author: Silvantor Posts: 141 |
Some MM picks are boring in my view, but some are very good. Taking the recent batch as an example - Quite Simply Gold and Sprocketz are very fun. | 2012-08-11 11:21:00 Author: Ali_Star Posts: 4085 |
We've actually had a couple topics concerning this, and to be honest, I'm actually not sure anymore. Any level can be boring. They have their reasons for being picked. There are plenty of levels out there that are all show and no gameplay. | 2012-08-11 12:35:00 Author: Sackpapoi Posts: 1195 |
The mostly higher amount of platformers being picked now could be seen as boring. It really depends on the variety of the levels. Since I'm not too crazy about platformers, I would see the Mm picks boring at times. | 2012-08-11 16:00:00 Author: Kalawishis Posts: 928 |
I don't find them boring. I guess people have different tastes | 2012-08-12 01:57:00 Author: GribbleGrunger Posts: 3910 |

I voted the first option because I find it a spam thread. SPAM (food) is okay, but not spam (multiple topics of the same). | 2012-08-12 03:35:00 Author: Apple2012 Posts: 1408 |
some are some not. i didn't like the lbp keyboard levels. the info and guide got mm picked but not the level where it gives you the stuff itself. also the keyboard wasn't that great. none of those levels were mm picked worthy. | 2012-08-12 05:33:00 Author: Sunbunny23 Posts: 995 |
Well in that case it's not boring. Environment and gameplay are two different things. Most of the levels I played are just walking and activating bridges/doors etc... Its MM Picked because its well made, but there is lack of good gameplay. Its almost like picture or moviem where you just make the movie play forward. Well, as I said in my first post and no one seems to remember it, I didnt say every level is like this, so stop giving me examples of different levels. | 2012-08-12 12:54:00 Author: Silvantor Posts: 141 |
One thing that almost all MM picks I've played has in common is great visuals. Unfortunately, that's about all that many of them have. Maybe it's self-serving because that's all I build, (and yeah, I'd love to get feedback/recognition one day) but where are the open-ended platformers?! Ones where you have to think a little bit and not just "go right until you win"? Pretty much every good multi-path level I've ever played was somebody's "hidden gem" recommendation because nobody ever promotes them. I've said it in many relevant threads, but I'll say it again. I still think the fix for so many complaints people have about community levels is some sort of GENRE CATEGORIES! The current search engine is a horrible joke and a clusterfudge. Millions of levels... one giant category. You often have no idea if you're starting a basic 3-minute platformer or minigame or RPG or an hour-long multi-path level. If categories existed, at least we could see a pick from each category or something. | 2012-08-12 14:28:00 Author: Unknown User |
Timekeeper: I agree with you. Also, how would you name the category for those visuals levels? Because it doesnt fit in many categories. Maybe relaxation? | 2012-08-12 15:30:00 Author: Silvantor Posts: 141 |
I think that sometimes MM just picks the same thing over and over. We actually need a player to work for MM, and tell them whats wrong with them. | 2012-08-12 18:37:00 Author: amoney1999 Posts: 1202 |
Before the launch of LBP2, and with news of the RTS that was being made, I was under the impression that the search categories would be split between genre and experience labels. For genre, something along the lines of: RTS, Tower Defense, RPG, Platformer, Vehicle, Stategy, Artistic, Music, Minigame, Multiplayer, etc. Only one of these labels could be chosen for a level, to help organize how levels could be found. From these genre categories, MM would pick levels, highlighting the best levels in each category. Then, players that played it could choose their own 'experience' labels, independent of the genre label, and very much like the current label system. Of course, I was quite mistaken. Now the only way I've reliably found an RTS is to put it into the text search. For something that requires so much work to make, you'd think it be easier to access. Same problem applies to Tower Defense levels, and boardgame-esque things... pretty much anything that's not a platformer. | 2012-08-12 19:40:00 Author: SSTAGG1 Posts: 1136 |
Timekeeper: I agree with you. Also, how would you name the category for those visuals levels? Because it doesnt fit in many categories. Maybe relaxation? "Artistic," maybe? Some of them are probably just "platformers," but I guess having creators define their own genre would be the key. The short, linear ones definitely should be set apart from adventure ones. It seems like they almost had the right idea with the tags, but tag-searching ends up with the same clustertruck of levels grouped together and doesn't really help much. | 2012-08-14 14:48:00 Author: Unknown User |
I think that sometimes MM just picks the same thing over and over. We actually need a player to work for MM, and tell them whats wrong with them. ..but then they would be Fred's picks or whoever right? The reason they are Mm picks is because they themselves like them for one reason or another. Whatever levels make you go "wow" would be your picks. Heart them and make a list and share them with Mm. They might send you a LBP cap dlc. | 2012-08-14 16:12:00 Author: jwwphotos Posts: 11383 |
I think the Mm picks are generally of an above average standard, but Steven predominantly tends to pick levels that follow the Mm story mode "run, jump, swing, bounce, dodge hazzard" kind of formula and I rarely see anything truly original that raises the bar or breaks the mold. It all feels a bit painting by numbers really. At least it's easy to see what sort of level to make if you really, really want an Mm pick though. | 2012-08-14 22:49:00 Author: Ungreth Posts: 2130 |
