Physical or Digital?

Archive: 26 posts

Since I've now been lumbered with a pile of UMDs I'm currently unable to play on my Vita, I've been wondering whether I should be future proofing any further purchases and going digital instead? It does seem to be the way things are going..

What are you lot doing?

Physical. Memory cards cost a ton of money. The game cards are small anyways; they are smaller than DS cards. Just get a case to carry your Vita and games. I use my old psp case, and my Vita and games fit in it!2012-08-09 12:10:00

Well,I have a 16GB memory card,7 games,and 6 apps,And i still have 5 GB left (i finished some of the games,i just didn't delete them)
plus a bunch of music and photos,I'm sure that at some point i will buy a physical copy of some game (LBP i want as a digital copy)
But right now,I'm just used to being able to download mys stuff, not get a card for them...and i would have to carry them around...That's why i think i will only buy one game as a card, and never never take out of my vita, so it will be like a digital copy
So...I think it depends on what you want to do...For me i just download,I'm just to exited to get a game, i cant go to a store and pay (more money) instead of getting it on my demand right away with a 8 min wait(and less money)

I'd pay the money to upgrade from the 4GB card the Vita came with and go the digital route if available from the PS Store...2012-08-09 17:16:00

Well..

You can use this forum to plan for LBP Vita's upcoming release
..I'm planning for LBP Vita's release by investigating which format I'd like to buy, but whatever. Thanks for your input.

it's a physical copy for me because when the 'special edition' come out (and it will) I'll want to be able to sell my old copy to get the new one2012-08-09 22:13:00

I have a 32 gb memory card for the Vita, going digital with LBPV...

I stopped buying UMDs when the Go came out and all new titles were made available on PSN. This turned out to be a good decision since I can play those PSP titles on the Vita now without having to buy them again. It's also extremely nice having dozens of games available without having to carry around anything but the Vita itself. I never sell games anyway.

Also, it annoys me to have to constantly swap game cards for stuff I continue to play for a long period of time. I like physical copies for wham-bam-done type of games (e.g., Resistance) but not for LBP.

Oh, and I moved the thread to [LBPV] Everything Else LittleBigPlanet Vita as you may have already noticed.

physical and digital haves it exclusives. here is an example.

physical: final fantasy crisis core (psp)

digital: ratchet and clank quest for booty (ps3)

so i would go with both really but mostly physical for taking less space.

I'm definitely veering towards digital, but what's the score with preorder bonuses? I've never seen a preorder option on PSN store, do we just miss out?2012-08-10 15:48:00

Well, if you preorder it at Gamestop, you get the game at the lowest price that Tarsier Studios was considering from when you preordered it. I preordered it when it costed $40, so if they raise the price to $60 (which they might do), I don't have to pay the extra $20.

On topic, I'm definitely going physical. Since I have a card case, I can get the game, forget about the actual case, and put the card in a card case.

If Sony wants to compete with the big retailers, like Gamestop, Amazon, Best Buy, etc.... and really wants people to buy digital, they need to come up with better incentives. I would love to have a digital copy of this, but the pre-order dlc is just to good to pass up. I want my Big Daddy and Little Sister costumes!

Sony has to want the customers to go digital, I mean how could they not? You can't trade a digital copy in at a used game store, so that eliminates a loss of revenue in the future for them. But they really don't make the customer want to do that.

Here is a thought. What if they offered lbpvita digitally one week before the actual release date? Can you imagine how many people would buy it off the ps-store if they could be playing the game before anyone else? I know I would. Just my opinion.

I would too, but like you said, I really couldn't imagine myself missing out on the pre-order DLC. Given I don't have a Vita yet, but I'm considering pre-ordering.2012-08-10 17:14:00

Gravity Rush from PSN came with the pre-order bonus, I'm willing to wager LBPV will too...Sony wants people to use digital distribution afterall. Other than costume colors (Ooooo!) this pre-order DLC isn't that exclusive...and is cheaper to buy than paying for release day shipping.2012-08-10 19:22:00

Physical for me. Considering LBPV will be the ONLY game I'll have for awhile, it'll always be in my Vita meaning digital would have no advantage. Besides, who doesn't want to grow their LBP collection and get the game case? I guess most here don't. 2012-08-17 19:12:00

Now that throws up an interesting consideration. It does appear that the more people embrace digital the less people are interested in the cover. The cover (as it was once with LPs) was one thing that drew you to a franchise, and as with LPs, it was an incentive to collect them all. Digital doesn't have that. You can't display them for all to see or admire the artwork on the cover. You can't flip through the instruction manual, hear the thrup of paper or smell the newness of the print, you can't feel the smoothness of the paper... Those are important senses you are neglecting when you go digital.

I do not think all of this is really important. People who purchase the game will read the manual one time only, and then will no longer bother about it. It is something that is just disposable.

Sorry for my english, btw

Agreed. Physical just makes you feel like you're getting more value for your money, instead of simply downloading it onto your Vita. Not to mention in 15 years that rare LBP collection of games you've been building up will sell for a good price... Although I'd probably keep mine for nostalgic sake. And what will happen if Sony goes bankrupt and closes down the PS Store and you have no way of replacing the game digitally? Dramatic, but still a reasonable scenario.

And @ cakito123, I know most gamers don't care about the manual and whatnot. But it's still exciting for quite a few players(like me and Gribble) to flip through that manual and admire each page. I personally like to look at manuals before starting up a new game, it makes things much more exciting.

(sucks already that Vita games don't come with manuals)

What if your disk gets scratched or the game card gets squashed? If I lose my easy to backup digital copy I have just as good a chance of buying a physical copy as you do.

Manuals have become worthless over the years, the last couple PS3 games I bought came with a mere pamphlet with little more than the standard, these are the buttons on the dual shock controller page?don't play for more than 15 minutes, etc.

I have a bookshelf in an spare bedroom that has over 100 PS2 titles collecting dust?digital doesn?t take up space in your house!

Worth considering the environmental impact of physical copies too tbh. Things have got to change really.2012-08-17 23:09:00

Well, there you have me. You win hands down with that argument and I retract my initial proposition

Digital. Definitely.

Get a great big 32GB memory card, and put all the games on it. FAR more convenient when you're on the road. I love being able to flip from game to game without struggling with a bunch of UMDs.

Although I REALLY wish there was a way to get the games I paid for onto the Vita. But... I suppose I can always keep the PSP around in case I get nostalgic.
