3D Background Lighting

Archive: 11 posts

Hi Guys and Gals,

I have a level that requires lighting to be but on a 3D layer glitched Layer. However, when I try to place down the LED light and set it to "Non see able in Play mode" the light just disappears. No matter what the setting are, you cannot see the light on the 11th back layer.

I want to use the LED light because it is very good for ambient lighting but for some reason nothing lights up on this layer. It doesn't have to be the LED but still.

Hopefully someone can help as it has been a real pain for the people involved .

Kind Regards,

Liam

first off thank you for posting this snooth for some reason i couldn't log in here last night only went to page cant be displayed,

OK evret, seems you have dealt with this before so ill ask you how would you go about creating lighting effects on the back 10 layers like that of a street light from the top down heres a picture of what i have and no by all means it is not finished yet i have been working about 2 weeks on this i hope to have it finished within a week or 2

but as you can see its lacking that pop of the lights being on

i tried doing it like this
but as you can see it looks like trash

i have 5 bars of therm used and I'm 1/3 finished i have very little logic to add but 75% decorations so I'm trying to save as much room for that as possible that and lately i have played a few 4 player games with 4 people and about halfway through the game it says the level is overheated and kicks everyone i don't want that here so I'm allowing 5 bars for play mode so i have about 4 bars to work with

As evret said, unfortunately there is just no known way of getting traditional lighting effects to work in the extra layers (beyond the normal three thick layers) - the game engine doesn't render any lighting effects there, no matter what you might try. The closest effect I can think of might be having some bright hologram as your street lights - I don't have a copy of LBP to test that at the moment, but I'm fairly sure that their brightness settings will work. It won't give you that halo of light (though you may be able to fake that with some sticker panel perhaps) but it will give you pin prick lights.

Of course, the downside to all this is that using all these little piece of hologram or sticker panel might not be all that efficient for your thermo. It's all a matter of playing about I guess. Good luck!

I do know that you can use holo and neon in the background layers, and even adjust their properties once they're there.2012-08-10 00:02:00

to fake it you could try sticker panel with the white circle sticker that fades as it gets further from the center, then mess around with the colour, brightness and opacity of the sticker panel to get the desired effect. the only issue u may get from this is u can get a weird halo around the edge of stickers like that. you should be able to have the sticker panel the same thickness and layer as the ground, as sticker panel always sits slightly forward of other materials2012-08-10 08:14:00

that looks cool
i find it the case from all pics taken from lbp
would you be willing to put that in a level and let me have a look @ it im thinking that the poly count is going to be too high on anything i do and im quickly running out of room for fx so soon it will be time to decrate or give up on decrations and apply fx

i should have mentioned that that is just one large square bit of sticker panel with multiple stickers on it, you need to do this if you want the lights to overlap otherwise it can look dodgy. using large SP and stickers can cause issues too, so u should try not to make them too large though, so try just doing a few that have to overlap on each. there is no need to cut the SP to the sticker so each can have just 3 corners, you just may need to look at it like a puzzle to keep the size of each down.
