Its a very simple task. . . you need an in between piece that will control the door's movement. Take a square of dark matter and place it somewhere nearby but offscreen, inside of this place a square of dissolve. Now attach a key to the dissolve and a switch to the Dark Matter, set the switch to directional, invert if needed (pistons and winches extend by default when a connected switch is turned on) and then rig the original switching mechanism to the dissolve instead of the door. In this way the key will disappear causing the status of the switch to change and the door to open and stay that way.2009-01-10 03:46:00

there is a way easier way to make a permanent switch >_>

1. Block of dark matter
2. Block of dissolve
3. key on dissolve
4. key switch on dark matter
5. invert switch
6. set switch to directional
7. set up the thing that dissolves the dissolve material and connect to dissolve material
8. Done and enjoy!

Cheers

Yes and since the switch is set to be "inverted" it turns the switch on and it can only be turned back "off" if a key somehow finds its way nearby.

If I remember I'll make a simple level that demonstrates how to achieve this and other common tasks. It will be downloadable and you will be able to collect all the switches used if you so desire.

Why, I'll have to thank all of you. I've been looking for a way to make a door that open for quite some time for quite some time.

Another thing I have been wondering though. Is there a way to make door (With a winch or a piston) that opens to... a hallway, for example, and would then close when the Sackperson is inside that hallway?

Yep.

You can manage to do it in two ways depending on how you want the door to work.

Always open/close.
Place a player sensor near the door, so when the player is near, the door opens; when the plyer goes away, the door closes.

Closed forever.
Like the door just mentioned in previous posts, only set it exactly the opposite way.
With the dissolve material gone, the door is closed forever.

Done!

I've beaten you to it Sam. The "How to" series is already up. The "How to make a permanent switch" one covers most of the things discussed here. The links to it are in my signature.
