Well, from what I know the definition of furries are people whom either wish they were an animal(or humanoid version of an animal,) or feel that they once lived as an incarnation of a specific animal. Many often dress up in costumes, create art and literature( I've seen alot of good artist out there that are furries), and hold gatherings as a way to express this desire to be an animal or beast-like being.

My brother took phsychology in college and learned that many consider it a type of official phsychological condition, albiet not a "bad" one. My personal opininon is the same I have for all people with or without apparent phsychological anomalies (i.e. homosexual, trans-gender, "emo", ect,) : I respect them unless they, as an individual, give me reason to do otherwise. The only possible problem I have is that there is too much furry and anthro art on DA in categories where it doesn't belong (same applies to anime and manga there... D: )

People I've had conversations with (over Deviantart,) or have seen have conversations with others, seem quite friendly in general and usually just act like normal people (trust me, there are exceptions as with everything), so the level hate and misunderstanding that furries often recieve is certainly unfair. I suppose to be misunderstood and picked on is simply the way of being to different in a society like ours, however.

There's quite a bit of confusion as to what it actually means to be a furry. I had to accumulate quite a bit of knowledge to even kind of grasp it because there are so many different definitions out there, and even mine is likely wrong. Some sure misconceptions as to what the definition is are as follows(mostly in the online art community):

1. People who draw themselves as animals (this is a big one)- simply not true by the actual definition of a furry. Some people do this f other reasons. For example, I even draw myself as an animal(ferret) that does some human things, but that is an alter-ego and nothing more and does not make me a furry.

2. People who draw animals in the typical 'Lion King/Balto' art style; people who make characters in this style- Though it is a peeve of mine how many people use this style instead of developing their own, still absolutely not the definition of a furry. There is such thing as making "furry art" without being a furry.

3. People that just draw animals anthropomorphically in any way (either as humanoids or animals doing human things)- 'Tis naught but close-mindedness. Anthropomorphic animal art does not always equal "furry art". After all, I can assure you the artists/authors of most animal-realted children's books are not all furries.

4. People who spend time with with real furries and treat them like human beings- Just no.

There are probably alot more, but that's all I can think of at the moment.

Whatever the true definition, furries are, overall, good people that have created a whole new subculture as well as a plethora of imagnative art and literature through their shared passion.

I have to disagree with Ninjaferret on this one, I don't know WHAT pyschologist he is talking to, but there is no way that someone can be born thinking they are a different species entirely. The pyschological furries - the one's that believe they are an animal - have been influenced into believeing so. They aren't on the level of Homosexuality or transgenderism (Though I tend to agree with Kinsler on Homosexuality, though there are certainly those people that are totally Homosexual with no influece.)

No, my definition is a bit broader, and all that. I like anthro art, in THAT sense, so I do guess that makes me a furry, atleast by my deifinition.

If that's what they believe, then I'm fine with that. I just think they take it too far when they start dressing up as that animal in public. 2012-09-01 19:04:00

Don't really care. As long as it isn't causing you to do anything illegal, who I am to say what you can and cannot like? If you're into anthro-like animals, go for it, I could care less. Just do what makes you happy.2012-09-02 04:08:00

I played with a furry on LBP2 who said he really wanted a fur suit, and wants to be embraced by "the fur." I was scared the entire time I talked to him, which was about an hour. He also said that he bit his friend a time or two and "craves human flesh." I know most furries are not that extreme, but it's about the farthest thing from natural to want to wear a fox suit all the time for the rest of your life. I love animals, but not in a sexual way or a way that I would want to be one. I can see the appeal of wearing animal costumes on LBP but if it begins to take over your life, I would be concerned. I did end up adding him on PSN though, haha2012-09-03 00:07:00

That, my friend, is not a furry, but a were-thing.

Therefore, I conclude that you, indeed, conversed with a weremole.
