PS3 Died...Did I Lose My Level?

Archive: 24 posts

My 60GB PS3 had the red blinking light of death and it has been sent off for warranty repair. I had a really awesome level (30+ hours in development). Are those levels saved on the hard drive or online? I did not publish the level yet. I pulled the hard drive out and hooked it up to a USB SATA connector and couldn't see anything on the drive. I put a new drive in the PS3 and it still didn't turn on so I am thinking it might have been the processor that fried. Does anyone know for sure where unpublished levels are saved I would appreciate it...I am praying online...but fear it is lost on my dead PS3. 2009-01-10 01:47:00

Sorry, not online. Your LBP save data is in, suprisingly enough, the Save Data folder on your hard drive. 2009-01-10 01:52:00

The guy at the store that I bought my PS3 told me that when you send in your PS3 for repairs there's a good chance they just send you a completely different PS3 (not a new one, someone else's that they repaired also).

if that is true then sadly, your saves will be erased.
sorry to hear about this man, i hope you learn to back up all of your saves in the future.

Cheers!

You should have published your level but locked it so you could copy it back on your edit planet. Because if you ever have to start over like I did you lose what you haven't published yet. Yeah I quit my game when then thing on the bottom was saving and there for had to delete my game save and redo everything in the story mode and I had lost one of my levels I was working on. But my levels that were already published were fine. I just had to copy them again to my other planet were you edit. :blush:2009-01-11 10:01:00

Everything above is true, it's generally mandated you back up all your data on removeable memory before shipping it off, and yes they generally just send you a new console...

You should have a work order number, though. It couldn't hurt to call customer service ASAP and say since your PS3 bricked you couldn't back-up the data, there might be a chance they could help.

As a rule of thumb I back up my LBP save data daily. Too many bugs have claimed countless hours of my work over the past few months.2009-01-11 15:16:00

Thanks...I didn't know you could pull back a published level to your create moon. I also sent a letter with my PS3 telling them how I tried replacing the hard drive and it didn't fix it and how if there was any way they could not wipe it clean I would greatly appreciate it - probably blew the processor. I will use your suggestion of backing up to a locked published level as well as to a jump drive in the future. Had the PS3 for over a year so was being a little lax with the thought of it crashing or dieing. Thanks for the tips!2009-01-11 15:19:00

Were you still on your warranty? (I suppose not since it's the almighty 60gig)

Because if you opened your PS3 you just voided it. You will need to pay them for the repair unless you put some impressive fit on the phone.

Had a 2yr extended warranty, they even paid for the UPS to ship it to the repair center - mailed me a label.

You can change your hard drive and not void the warranty...called Sony to check before I did it. Real easy to do - several youtube videos about it. I now have a 250GB drive I am going to put in it when it returns. It was only $90 at best buy. 2.5" SATA 5400rpm drive. No I didn't open the actual case because that does void the warranty and extended warranty.

You're right. I didn't realise you didn't need to kill the seal when changing hardware because obviously it's permitted to change hard drives 2009-01-11 21:40:00

I got my PS3 back from warranty repair a week ago and they didn't lose any of my data!!! I just finished my second level, thankfully I didn't have to start over. Awesome! Nice turn of events. Is it the same PS3? Still a 60gig?

Yep...I made some marks on the drive, back of system, etc. with a permanent marker to verify if they sent me back my original. They just replaced the motherboard...everything else they returned was my original. I was lucky...and they didn't have to wipe my hard drive clean!2009-01-29 15:16:00

If the motherboard is new, does it still play PS2 games? All the new PS3's lose the backwards compatability. 2009-01-30 03:16:00

Great question...I haven't tried yet. I will do that tomorrow and I hope so since that is why I bought that model.2009-01-30 05:11:00

My PS3 was gone the whole month of November. I didn't care if I didn't get my save data back, but I did!

My problem was most likely the blue ray drive, the PS3 still turned on and I could back up any data I wanted. Just couldn't read any disc.

Wow how often does a PS3 die... I don't want mine to die Is it because of the blu-ray drive?2009-02-03 18:59:00

There's multiple reasons why a Ps2 or any electronic piece can die.

What's important to know is that faulty PS3 are VERY RARE. Your PS3 probably won't break on you.

If you have a Xbox 360 though...

Sorry, I had to say it.
