MM's Next Game Discussion

Archive: 39 posts

Ok, so, we know MM is working on a new game, right? So far, we know little. This is the info on their next project on LinkedIn (http://uk.linkedin.com/company/media-molecule/secret-new-mysterious-game-864263/product?trk=biz_product):

What are we doing right now? Well, that?d be telling. Suffice to say, we are very hard at work making games. Even as you read this very sentence, we?re typing furiously, having meetings, writing crazy algorithms, painting pixels and drawing up schedules. Not to hype it up or anything, but literally everything we do right now is shrouded in secrecy. Even that new type of tea in the kitchen. No one knows what it is or where it came from, but everyone is raving about it. There?s no need to ask, because it is a mystery to you.

and on their Jobs (http://www.mediamolecule.com/jobs/experienced_programmer/) Page:

At Media Molecule, we are currently working on brand new IPs, even more ambitious than LBP was when it was conceived 6 years ago.

BTW, if you're wondering why I, of all people, was looking at MM stuff, it's cause I need to write a resume for a college course and decided that MM was a good choice for my fake resume, and I found this when trying to find it's address.

Anyway, what you should get from this is that MM's next game is more ambitious than LBP. Now, I'm unsure if there is any way they could measure ambition without it being the same type of ambition, meaning that I'm pretty sure their next game will be a Play Create Share title. Only more ambitious.

So, what do you think? LBP 3D? If so, keep the LBPness (even though they say new IP) or make it so you can make more realistic stuff?

I was thinking it might be something like XNA for Xbox 360, where it'd be a launch title for the PS4 and people could create their own games on it without the confines of LBP... Does that sound ok to your ears? If not, what do you think?

We're not gonna see any new LBP goodness from MM. One of their new IPs could be something evolving from LBP. LBP2's create mode is quite complex, the next direction for MM is to build on that with an IP with a premise similar to LBP but with a more intense focus on creating stuff, maybe to the point where it becomes programming stuff, creating custom polygons, shading, tetrahedrons and sh*t.2012-08-01 03:36:00

I read an article about Playstation Mobile (http://www.playstation.com/psm/), and it had this image:

http://www.playstation.com/psm/images/psm.jpg

Play, Create, Deliver!? Sounds familiar! Could we be playing the next LittleBigPlanet on our mobile phone or tablets!?!

Nah, probably not. They did once say that they wished there was room for more mature content on LBP, so they're probably doing a new IP that doesn't suffer from these restrictions.

LBP on a table? I thought tables were for putting food on, or for spilling the coffee.

Plenty of games are played on a table, no problem. But that would mean.. they must be working on a boardgame, or maybe a tabletop roleplaying game! With burlap miniatures! You heard it hear first, folks!2012-08-01 14:15:00

LittleBig...
Thanks.

On topic:
If it's "more ambitious" than LBP, it has to be big. The only thing I'm worried about really is how they're going to come up with another character as lovable or enjoyable as Sackboy. I thought they couldn't fit any more into LBP2, but seeing as they have to come up with something totally new AND beat LBP, it's like trying to guess what's at the edge of the universe.

I'd say "restaurant", but that's at the end, not the edge.

256-player battles where you debate across a table. Features character customization. All players play as Sackboy stuffed with fluff, love and ice cream.

If they're being exceptionally ambitious, I could see them making a tool in which creators could create a game, then publish to the PSN. Assuming a PS4 release, and that Sony embraces the success of The play/create/share model, I wouldn't be surprised to see something being tied directly into the PS4 console. With the release of the PSV developer tools (whatever it was called), it's not TOO far of a stretch.

With some nice MM storyline, and perhaps full 3D gameplay, that would be a nice stepping stone to success for the new console.

I suppose it'd be something like an app store for the PS4, but with games made by people playing MM's game....?

Too ambitious? Probably

Crate mode goes with the Table game that everyone else was talking about. It's a pun

That's pretty much what I was thinking. Could be good. Anyone else have thoughts on this, and not the table thing?

I'm hoping for a play/create/share title like LBP, but with full 3D gameplay instead of 2.5D. Nothing like lbp karting with it's horrible, restrictive and unwieldy create mode, but something well designed and user friendly. I'd love to be able to make Tomb Raider style adventure levels in 3D. I'm not yet sure whether I would prefer to see a game like that come packaged as the next phase of the LBP franchise, or as a completely new, original title, but either way...3d play/create/share is top of my wishlist.2012-08-10 05:59:00

I personally hope if a 3Dgameplay create game is made that it won't be LBP. i personally don't think 3Dgameplay mixes well with LBP oh and the fact i strongly dislike 3Dgameplay normally in general. so yeah, if they make a 3Dgameplay create game i hope it's a new IP and not LBP. *mew2012-08-10 06:13:00

There's still plenty of LBP games coming out.

Little thought, does anyone think this game could be...next-gen?

Also gonna throw this out here, if there is a game, I'd like to make predictions on it, for the sake of fun.

Next-gen title
Focused for younger ages, maybe ages not as young as what LBP aimed at though
World generation feature
MMO-like features
Heavy focus on community
Custom world/level/game creation
3 dimensions to play in
Cartoonish animal characters

Just throwing that out from all the small stuff I've heard from and seen.

Also, think about the art-style, what could it be? It may not be craft-art again, it could be realistic (not-likely), pixel art, anything. I'm thinking it's cartoony, with a colorful and visual style that pops out, but not in the way that it burns your eyes.

My guess at what's coming, much the same as you warlord.

- Next-gen
- T rating
- x/y/z movement, 3d
- expanded logic tools and capabilities
- Increased game creating abilities ( such as more players in a level, up to 10)
- A simplified and advanced view of the interface, for casual/advanced players (eg: simply view would only show the basic edit menu, whereas advanced view would show it all but very cluttered)
- Multiple art styles, from highly realistic to super stylized cartoony (allowing wide variety of content)
- Somewhat randomly generated levels (enemy location, puzzle components)
- Camera controls while playing (rotate)

I think we're all far from the mark though. Why move away from LBP if they were going to make something similar. I have a strange feeling it's going to be some M rated game, simply because the content they will allow with the creation tools will be much less restrictive. I do find it hard to believe anyone at MM could make something mature though.

I hope its a lot like lbp if its not i guess thats ok lol.

Edit-I agree with (SSTAGG1) I hope there next game is more of a T than a E I hope its 3D.I'm thinking it could be for th next gen but you never know.

Sony has detailed their gamescom 2012 presence, teasing an unannounced project as well as the fact that Media Molecule will be at the show.

The Sony press conference begins at 7.00pm CET/6.00pm BST/ 1.00pm EST on 14th August and will be live streamed online, as well as on Home, the PlayStation Official App and on the PlayStation Facebook. While they obviously didn’t fully detail the actual show itself – which is rumored to include 2 new game reveals and a slimmer PS3 – the company announced that immediately after the conference they’ll be hosting a panel discussion about the classic ‘games as art’ debate. The debate will include:
•Shuhei Yoshida, President, Sony Computer Entertainment Worldwide Studios
•Ian Dallas, Co-founder and Creative Director, Giant Sparrow (The Unfinished Swan)
•Kellee Santiago, Co-founder, thatgamecompany (Journey, Flower)
•Alex Evans, Co-founder, Media Molecule (LittleBigPlanet)
•Adam Volker, Moonbot Studio (Wonderbook: Diggs Nightcrawler)
•…and a special guest working on a currently unannounced project

We can’t wait to see what the unannounced project is, but it’s also interesting to hear that Medial Molecule are attending – perhaps we’ll see the reveal of one of their new IPs.

Hmm, here's my opinion on if they make a '3D serious LBP' without LBP in it. Unless the series stops after Karting, we can all agree it's inevitable that there'll be a LBP 3D probably on the PS4.

Now I'm not saying this is a bad thing, but too many options can be confusing for consumers. For example... Modnation Racers was made a couple years ago. LBP Karting is releasing this year and it has been questioned countless times why Sony is making such a similar title.. when essentially they could've made a MNR2.(it's obvious this decision was made taking LBP's popularity into consideration)

On the other hand if they do it just right, they can have an 'Adult Play Create Share' mascot(from the new game) and a 'Kids Play Create Share' mascot(which would be Sackboy). The 2 would co-exist and of course appeal to different demographics of gamers.

Just my opinion. Hell, we don't even know what kind of game this will be. But if it IS an adult themed LBP, this would be my opinion.

(And if there is a possibility they're working on LBP3[since they only work on the main series] I honestly think those chances are slim... they're probably burned out on LBP by now and want to try something new.)

One last note. I wonder if Mm is surprised how far LBP has come, or if they expected this. When I got LBP1 I loved it but totally thought it would be some one hit wonder overlooked title. I'm also curious if Sony is going to use Sackboy then throw him out when the PS4 comes out. Remember Crash Bandicoot/Spyro with PS1? Or Ratchet&Clank/Jak&Daxter for PS2? You don't hear about those franchises much anymore.(except for R&C but it's not nearly as big anymore)
