London 2012 Olympics

Archive: 39 posts

Woo! The XXX Olympiad have almost officially begun! Opinions of everything so far? Might be best to use spoilers because for some of us across the pond, NBC did not want to air it live, so we have to wait thirty minutes after the opening ceremony begins to watch.

I'll probably put some news in here, results, medals, etc. Maybe I'll put up a poll or two?

Games Coverage:
NBC coverage (http://www.nbcolympics.com/).
BBC coverage (http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/olympics/2012/).
London 2012 coverage (http://www.london2012.com/).

Polls:
The first poll is based on the 15 countries with the highest overall medal count, take no offense if your country is not there.

NBC has a page that lists it all.
Great for finding the events you'd like to watch.

Yup, I'll probably be watching everything though, I'm an Olympic aficionado of sorts. There have been so many anger people with NBC that they choose not to broadcast the opening ceremonies live, but they will have every event live on their website.2012-07-28 00:04:00

BBC has some excellent coverage as well (for those of us who can't get NBC abroad)

I've been watching the opening ceremonies for three hours now and it's pretty awesome. Just heard this is the first Olympics that ALL the countries participating have women members as part of their delegations.... that... is... just.... AWESOME!

Very excited to watch all the events I can! I've got to root for Team GB and USA this time though!

There's a BBC sports app on PS3 for UK people under my channels in TV/Video services I think it'll have live streaming for everything.2012-07-28 01:08:00

Herp derp? What list, I don't think anybody posted a list?

Welp, NBC broadcasts on three different channels I think, it is hard to keep up with all of them so currently I am watching USA vs South Korea in women's Volleyball. It is a pretty awesome first match, Women's Basketball was great too, and I think Croatia preformed well at their first Olympiad.

I'm pretty sure he's referring to the poll you've created.

Oh, well Mags, if you read the OP, you'll find that I said I only included the current top 15 countries with the highest medal count. I could have added every country... but the poll would be the length of a page.2012-07-29 01:30:00

We went down the road to see the cycling go past. n_n Amazing how many people turned up just to watch them shoot by in 5 seconds. It was fun though, because our cousins brought cake and scotched eggs. c[:

o.o Whoa, you may have seen me for a brief second on tv. That is a scary thought. I must go back to my cellar.

My highlights were when the U.S. opening marchers discovered their outfits were made in China (http://espn.go.com/olympics/summer/2012/story/_/id/8160403/2012-olympics-china-made-team-usa-uniforms-ignite-anger) and when Kuwaitans accidentally sung Borat's Kazakhstan National Anthem (http://www.theatlantic.com/international/archive/2012/03/another-country-confuses-borat-music-with-kazakhstans-national-anthem/255028/) instead of the real one.

So, what are our favorite sports to watch? I'm finding the "lesser" sports like fencing, shooting, and judo pretty awesome.

I saw the archery event. Wasn't interested that much since I don't shoot that much, but the Italy vs. USA finals was amazing. I'm still impressed by that clutch Italy pulled off.

I pretty much love every sport, and I try to watch as many as possible. I really love the sports that have those "WHOA WTF JUST HAPPENED?!? HOW IS THAT EVEN POSSIBLE?" moments.2012-07-30 03:22:00

I haven't been able to keep up with everything, and it's a bit late saying this, but that final serve on the U.S. vs. Australia (I think?) for women's volleyball trials was amazing. Those Aussies really gave it their all.

I haven't been able to watch every second, but I have seen a whole lot of swimming and gymnastics, really cool stuff. Congratulations to Ryan Lochte on his win on the first day, although I had to laugh at his interview, seeing the way he described things. xP

I was sick of Locthe before the 400IM. He basically lost the relay for the US. Seriously though, what is with all the hype, is he really that great of a swimmer (compared to other athletes at the games).

I was watching kayak slalom earlier, intense.

I just don't get the appeal of the olympics. I'm watching it at work right now and I'm feeling totally, utterly, mind numbingly bored out of my skull. Wow...people running around a field! Gosh...people swimming laps of a pool! Stand back in amazement...paint drying on a wall!

Someone hand me a gun so I can shoot myself in the head and put an end to this tedium!

Or you could just not watch it. Although, seeing how much the Olympics are broadcasted, I can see that isn't as easy as it might sound. But, seeing just how popular the Olympics are, and that this is the 30th modern olympiad, I'm pretty sure we should all know how this works by now.

Nonetheless, we all have our own opinion, and maybe some sports just don't suit certain people's interests, while others would. I haven't been watching the Olympics much lately, but I was at the beginning, and I'll definitely try to get back into it.

(As far as things go for Ryan Lochte, I wasn't trying to praise him or whatever, I've barely even heard of the guy. Just saying congrats.))

I work night shifts at a nursing home where we sit together in the lounge when the residents are sleeping, and the other staff like to watch TV through the night. That means the olympics is always there, right in my face. Hard to avoid it really.

It's true that the Olympics are a bit dull, but I watch them out of boredom and actual interest in certain events (i.e. Archery, since I've been practicing for quite a bit now). Well that and patriotism; it's fun seeing someone post how their country will beat yours, only to have the exact opposite happen and see a flood of posts chanting and bragging about it. Other than that, most people who watch them generally like sports, so I guess not everybody can get into it.

BTW, I'd suggest you play Russian Roulette before you off yourself; at least have a bit of fun before calling it quits.

Alright, I was just making sure. Sorry, didn't really know you were put into those kind of situations.

One of the girls from Belarus tore her tights during the routine.
