Gaming Desktop Recommendations

Archive: 17 posts

Hello LBPCers,

I've recently become interested in PC gaming, and would like to know some of your recommendations for desktops, as my Vista desktop is not capable of playing Facebook games without an ounce of lag. I would probably be getting it for Xmas, because I have NO money right now. I honestly don't know a lot about what to look for in a gaming desktop (as I don't currently own one). If any of you could make a recommendation of what to get I would be very grateful.

Another thing to point out, it would have to be under $700, if possible.

EDIT: I will mostly be playing strategy games (Starcraft, and other RTS's), The sims, and the occasional shooter.

Thank you for reading

If you know nothing of building your own PC, I would suggest going over to Newegg (http://www.newegg.com/) and buying a prebuilt one there. That way, when you get more money, you can slowly upgrade your parts until you get exactly what you want.

My current setup is:

Windows 7 64-Bit
Intel Core i7-2600k CPU @ 3.40GHz
8Gb DDR3 Memory
1.82TB HDD
NVIDIA GeForce GTX570
MSI motherboard

This all came to around $1300 or so and I'm able to play most games at the highest graphic settings. On Crysis 2, I only lag when there are a lot of particles. And on BF3, I don't have frame drops at all.

If you are just going to be playing strategy games, such as The Sims, I recommend either buying a desktop from a name brand manufacturer (HP, Dell, etc.) and being overcharged or to build your own and potentially save $200+ dollars. As Speedy mentioned, Newegg is a brilliant site and I buy all of the parts for my builds from Newegg. I can play all of The Sims series on a fairly old computer with an NVIDIA 8400GT (which is from 2006) and a Core 2 Quad CPU. I suggest you build your own PC from scratch (it is so easy anybody could do it) and you will be able to build a nice rig within your price range. (Or a rig capable of running the games you want to play and you could save a little cash.)

Are you just interested in Strategy games or would you be playing more graphic intensive games than The Sims series?

Edited first edit, I was saying I'd be playing strategy games, The Sims, and sometimes a shooter. I will be playing RTS's, The sims, and shooters. 3 different things.2012-07-26 16:23:00

You might find the Falcon guide helpful. It was updated recently:

On how to build a PC: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d_56kyib-Ls

For games it can vary, since ancient flight simulators can be made to be more demanding than something like BF3 and some games are just poorly optimised. It's all relative.

I'd recommend an Intel build with at least 4GB of RAM, and an NVIDIA GTX 560. Any HDD will do really, and the motherboard shouldn't matter very much in your case, just find one that has the features you desire and can afford. I personally don't find the Falcon guide useful because for most every part on there, you can find it available with different specifications.2012-07-26 18:39:00

I wouldn't. He wants it cheap, and Intel is definitely not the way to go for that.

Make sure you have a good enough PSU, don't try to save money there because if it isn't good enough, all your other parts are worthless.

Ivy Bridge is much more power efficient and performs better than any AMD CPU. They are creatively cheap, compared to what Intel builds used to cost. Many simulation games do not take advantage of multiple cores, and if they do, it is typically only dual core. AMD advertises performance by cramming as many cores into a CPU for a cheap as possible when in reality, few program benefit from multicore processors. So unless you are doing a lot of video/photo editing/manipulation I wouldn't suggest AMD for a budget build. A Core i5 will not be that expensive, and for his needs, that is all he will need.

I recently purchased an Alienware x51 for $749.00. While Alienware is known for over pricing this is not a bad deal at all. I recommend checking this model out.2012-08-01 03:23:00

Ramboo99, that is a mediocre gaming machine. Build your own or look for a better deal.2012-08-03 01:48:00

Just buy any stock Alienware within your budget.
BOOM, DONE.
No time spent trying to build your own, no money wasted by buying wrong parts or extra stuff you dont need.

Except they are overpriced as ****.

Don't expect to play anything more than that on it though. I have an MSI GX660r, and that was pretty **** expensive, and it still isn't as powerful as my far cheaper desktop.

I'd never built one before, didn't have any problems with it. As long as you are careful and read up a bit on what you are doing (or just watch a video, there are plenty on youtube) it's easy. It's pretty much just clipping bits into other bits... Obviously if you want portability then a desktop isn't much use, but for gaming it is far better and cheaper, plus you can upgrade parts rather than having to replace it every few years to play new stuff...
