Game Freezing While Playing My Level

Archive: 10 posts

Hello to all,

I just recently finished a level. It is in the testing phase and about to be published. It is a Coop Level best suited for two players. I tested it online with two different people and it either froze on my part or their part. Another player reported that it froze as well, yet he played it earlier in the day and it was fine. I don't know if it is my level or the servers causing this. I can understand happening once in a while, but this is too frequently. My level does have some complexity in it, but I do not believe it is anymore complex than a lot of the levels I play. Does anyone have any suggestions? Why this is happening?

Is the level thermo overheating or something?
Restarting lbp before playing it could help.

The thermos is not overheated. It has about a line or two before the top. I don't know if the emitting objects/holograms are causing it to overheat (there isn't much of them) while playing. I'll try to restart LBP before playing, but I figured I already did that when it froze up on me and I tried it again and the same thing happened.2012-07-26 04:35:00

I've had the same issue. I doubt it's a server issue, since it's happened to me while I was playing alone. I think it has to do with simply having too many emitted objects in the level at one time. I might be wrong, but I don't think the thermo counts for those emitted objects until they are actually emitted. So, if your thermo is close to full, the emitted objects are probably secretly bumping it up into the overheating range.

Of course, I could be totally wrong. I don't really know much about how the LBP2 thermo works. Just my best guess.

i think its just too much stuff going on. it happened with my heli level, in multilayer. in lbp1 and early lbp2, no problem. now i will crash as soon as the heli comes if i have more than one person. also with my ai deathmatch level every time i have played it (since lbp2's launch) it allays has diverged. i will have 50+ of the same ai in a different level, no problem. maiby that's it, try save as and put it in a different creator. or capturing the entire level and placing in a new empty level.2012-07-26 06:04:00

Do you have an emitter in your level because that might be the cause because sometimes if an emitter is set up wrong it may freeze a PS3, for example if you put an object in the emitter that is being spawned with an infinity time and if too many are being spawned it will freeze the PS3. This is just a possible reason that I have done in the past and froze my PS3. 2012-07-27 11:43:00

Play through the level in create so you can watch what happens. Don't save the changes. If it is a thermo issue (probably) you will be able to see it happen. You should always try to leave 3-4 bars on the thermo since player costumes, especially those heavily decorated, will spike the thermo.2012-07-28 01:57:00

Thanks for all the advice. I am not exactly sure what it is. I think it is a thermos issue or the level is just too complex for multiplayer. I turned everything on in Create. The thermos does not spike much and and does not overheat. I just realized that nobody reported issues until I added the final part. So, I'm thinking that I just made everything too complex for multiplayer. What I did is divide the level up with level links. It's working fine so far. So, I'll leave it at that. Thanks again everyone.2012-07-30 02:13:00

You have to be careful about emitting too many things at once, or having too much logic active at a time during multiplayer games. These things have a tendancy to diverge the two clients, resulting in a crash of the level for one or multiple players.

Good idea to split it up. You can also destroy anything in the level that would not be needed again once the player completes it. This is how some creators fit more into their levels without overwhelming the thermo.

I think you are right as there is a lot of logic that gets operated. I think there are less than ten emitters on the board. As for destroying parts, I did consider that, but it was too much trouble and I don't even know if it would still work. So, the lightbulb came on and told me "Why not split the level up since it was working fine before the final addition? It was much easier to do and it seems to be working. This was my first time creating a multi-player level and I had no idea that these things would happen. Lesson learned. Next time I make a multi-player level, I know to make it as simple as possible.2012-07-30 20:18:00
